Golden Horse Awards

Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards will be capping the 46th annual Golden Horse Awards Film Festival on November 28. Nominations have been announced and I have picked through them to highlight action-oriented films of interest including COW, CRAZY RACER and THE WARRIOR AND THE WOLF. Of additional note, Nick Cheung is up for Best Leading actor for THE BEAST STALKER while Sammo Hung and Tony Leung Siu-hung are in the Best Action Choreography running for last year’s IP MAN.

With its vivid, energized visuals and bittersweet war theme, Guan Hu’s COW looks to be the Chinese equivalent of THREE KINGS with shades of Jiang Wen’s anti-war drama DEVILS ON THE DOORSTEP. It’s a film I am eagerly waiting to see.

The one nomination I can’t wrap my mind around is Philippe Decouflé for Best Action Choreography in Tsai Ming-liang’s artsy dramedy VISAGE (aka FACE). The trailer doesn’t reveal anything approaching action and since I haven’t seen it I’ll have to take their word for it. Perhaps this category includes dance choreography.
