Angie TSANG

When master action choreographer and director Yuen Woo-Ping was looking to cast a young Wong Fei-Hung in his 1993 actionfest IRON MONKEY, he discovered a young wushu champion named Tsang Sze-Man. Tsang Sze-Man was actually a female wushu champion who uses the English name of Angie Tsang.

Angie Tsang Sze-Man was born in 1980 in Hong Kong. At the age of ten, Angie began training in the art of the lion dance. Her instructor, Ha Tak-Kin, suggested that Angie take up wushu and that same year, she won her very first gold medal in a competition. She would go on to join the Hong Kong National Wushu Team.

At the age of 13, Yuen Woo-Ping casted her as the young Wong Fei-Hung opposite Donnie Yen, who played Wong Kei-Ying in the film IRON MONKEY. Many have hailed this as one of the best Hong Kong action films of the 90’s, thanks to its impressive fight choreography. Angie was able to showcase the skills that made her a wushu champion. This would be Angie’s only film appearance and it is worth seeing for her performance.

Angie would continue to compete. She represented Hong Kong in many international competitions, including the Asian Games in 1998 and 2002, one of the grandest martial arts tournaments. In 2003, Angie decided to take a break from competition to live a childhood dream.

In 2003, Angie Tsang became a member of the Hong Kong Police Force. She had dreamed to become a police officer since the age of eight, when her mother was robbed by a man with a chopper. Angie and her brother were with their mother when the robbery happened. She had also mentioned that it was the righteousness of the police officers that made her want to become a police officer herself. She received an award for the Best All-round Police Constable in her squad.

Angie returned to competition and would go on to win a 1st Runner up Award at the East Asian Games in 2005, a gold medal at the World Wushu Championships in Vietnam, and a silver medal at the World Games in Qatar in 2006.

Angie is married to Sidney Chan. On May 11, 2008, the couple became parents of a beautiful baby girl named Winsome. Angie is enjoying the joys of motherhood, but martial arts fans will always remember her as Wong Fei-Hung in IRON MONKEY, a feat I am sure she is proud of to this day.

I have to say, in the more recent pictures of her she still looks rather masculine.
