News has been slow in coming on the highly anticipated release of Wong Kar-wai’s ASHES OF TIME REDUX, until now. The heavily re-worked version of Wong’s 1994 wuxia masterpiece has a new poster out and will be premiering at Cannes on May 18th.
Working through his Jet Tone Film Production company, Wong has spent three years and estimated $1.5 million in re-editing the film, adding new special effects and new scoring from Yo Yo Ma.
The original film is an all-star swordplay saga starring the late Leslie Cheung, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Brigitte Lin, Maggie Cheung, and Tony Leung Ka-fai. It was based on a famous wuxia novel by Jin Yong (aka Louis Cha) and set in the desert wastes of Western China. It is the only martial arts movie directed by Hong Kong’s leading art house director and in its original form was also one of the most challenging martial arts movies to watch due to it’s non-linear narrative and heavy character study. Tightly edited wirework action was choreographed by Sammo Hung in one of his few wuxia-related projects.
