Jackie Chan: ‘It was a mistake to make ‘Drunken Master”

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

While promoting an online video game spin-off of his upcoming movie BIG SOLDIER in Beijing, action star Jackie Chan said he was not proud of all of his movies and called some of his early films a “mistake.”

Fans might be thinking he was talking about those early Lo Wei films like NEW FIST OF FURY and THE KILLER METEORS. Nope. He has decided to turn his back on the one film that made him a superstar, one that remains a favorite among fans of Jackie Chan and kung fu movies in general.

“It was a mistake to make DRUNKEN MASTER,” said Chan. “The film was all about getting drunk to fight. It misled the audience.”

This would be the same film that Chan admits in his autobiography was his first blockbuster that made his a real celebrity.

Chan added that he “tried to correct the mistake in the 1994 sequel which tells the audience to be tolerant.”

I guess that would be the same sequel where Chan drinks industrial-grade alcohol in order to beat Ken Lo, not with skill but with drunkenness and a high tolerance for pain. Yes, Jackie, there is nothing misleading about that, is there?

Chan didn’t forget why he was at the event and proceeded to plug the video game. He probably should have looked at the game before talking about it though.

“Most of the video games available today are about fighting and killing,” Chan said. “This is not good for children. I hope by playing our game, youngsters will get a message of peace.”

Does that peace involve firing brightly colored globs of magical light at opponents to make them die… I mean, disappear? That seems to be a primary element of the COMBAT in your peaceful game Jackie.

With a tamer variation on more violent game violence, it looks to me like the game designer is planning to prep adolescents for a future of killing and violence in games, not to mention this is an online game which probably means they’re going to turn more hapless Chinese kids into MMO addicts. Jackie Chan, what have you done?!

Seriously, I think Chan has missed the point that his movies do not promote violence, at least among the majority of viewers not predisposed towards violence. No, his films, at least the good ones, like DRUNKEN MASTER, inspire people the same way that Buster Keaton’s antics inspired Jackie Chan.

Chan has said a lot of stupid things in recent years and this one nearly tops them all. There is nothing wrong with promoting peace and good virtues but why spit on your own legacy? DRUNKEN MASTER is something Chan should be proud of, even if he is at a different place in his worldview. I still respect him for all the great movies he has made but I really wish he would take the advice I received from former NFL player, Blaxploitation star and minister Rosey Grier when he wrote next to his autograph to me, “Think before you act.”

‘Five Venoms’ action director jailed

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Leung Ting

Kung fu grandmaster and former fight choreographer Leung Ting has been sentenced to two months in jail in Hong Kong for attacking his girlfriend.

Leung is best known to genre film fans as an action director on several classic kung fu movies including THE CHINATOWN KID and THE FIVE VENOMS. He is also the founder of the International Wing Tsun Association.

Leung, 62, was released on HK$50,000 bail pending appeal. He was accused by his former girlfriend, Rita Lip Sik-ying, of banging her head against the floor, kicking her in the stomach and boxing her ears during a dispute over one of Leung’s former wives.

In testimony, Leung refuted the claims, stating that Lip had become angry after he refused to give her HK$50,000 for an abortion. He claimed she became hysterical and tried to jump out of a window so he grabbed her arm and neck to save her. He also claimed Lip hit her own head against the floor, banged on the neighbors’ doors and shouted, “Leung Ting is hitting a woman.”

In speaking to Hong Kong newspaper Sing Tao Daily, Lip, 45, described Leung as a womanizer who had many girlfriends.

This isn’t the first time Leung has been at the center of controversy. In 2005, he took a former pupil of 25 years to court over claims of copyright infringement related to the use of school logos.

Leung has also created controversy in the martial arts world by claiming to be the last closed-door student of Wing Chun master Yip Man and the head of the Wing Chun School. These claims have not been recognized by Yip Man’s family or students.

Snipes’ ‘Game of Death’ gets new director

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Wesley Snipes

It’s slightly moldy news but worth posting anyway since it hasn’t been widely publicized. Moviehole reports that Abel Ferrara has left Columbia’s GAME OF DEATH, the action film now in production in Detroit that would have reunited the KING OF NEW YORK filmmaker with star Wesley Snipes.

It isn’t known why Ferrara left. Replacing him is the lesser known Giorgio Serafini who has largely been working in Italian TV for the past five years.

GAME OF DEATH is not related to the similarly titled martial arts movie that starred Bruce Lee. It concerns a botched assassination attempt on a diplomat that leaves him and the bodyguard wounded. At the hospital, the bodyguard and a nurse team up to protect the diplomat from a second attack.

Stunt actress Zoe Bell (INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, ANGEL OF DEATH) and Robert Davi also star.

2009 Golden Horse nominations

Golden Horse Awards

Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards will be capping the 46th annual Golden Horse Awards Film Festival on November 28. Nominations have been announced and I have picked through them to highlight action-oriented films of interest including COW, CRAZY RACER and THE WARRIOR AND THE WOLF. Of additional note, Nick Cheung is up for Best Leading actor for THE BEAST STALKER while Sammo Hung and Tony Leung Siu-hung are in the Best Action Choreography running for last year’s IP MAN.

With its vivid, energized visuals and bittersweet war theme, Guan Hu’s COW looks to be the Chinese equivalent of THREE KINGS with shades of Jiang Wen’s anti-war drama DEVILS ON THE DOORSTEP. It’s a film I am eagerly waiting to see.

The one nomination I can’t wrap my mind around is Philippe Decouflé for Best Action Choreography in Tsai Ming-liang’s artsy dramedy VISAGE (aka FACE). The trailer doesn’t reveal anything approaching action and since I haven’t seen it I’ll have to take their word for it. Perhaps this category includes dance choreography.

The complete list of Golden Horse nominations can be found at the official site.

‘Chen Zhen’ begins shooting as superhero movie

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Press conference for THE LEGEND OF CHEN ZHEN (2010). Sina

Production began on Monday for CHEN ZHEN (aka THE LEGEND OF CHEN ZHEN), a kung fu actioner directed by Andrew Lau with Donnie Yen starring and choreographing the action. What may come as a surprise is that Lau intends to combine Donnie Yen-style kung fu with visual effects to create a superhero movie.

Lau states that Chen Zhen will be a superhero who is not only a master of martial arts but will transform himself to take on the challenge of saving the entire city. The film’s co-writer and producer, Gordon Chan, has stated that this will not be a remake of FIST OF FURY but rather a reinvention.

Chen Zhen is the semi-fictional student of Huo Yuan-jia, first made famous by Bruce Lee who portrayed him in writer-director’s Lo Wei’s FIST OF FURY. In 1994, Jet Li took on the role in FIST OF LEGEND. An ATV series titled FIST OF FURY followed with Yen starring as Chen Zhen.

Here is the plot according to The Hollywood Reporter:

Set in 1920s Shanghai, the film features Donnie Yen as a local resistance fighter who had been taken for dead after a bloody skirmish. After an absence of seven years he returns in disguise to uncover a plot linking the triads and the Japanese.

Anthony Wong, Shu Qi and Zhou Yang also star. The latter two stars will portray women who vie for the affections of Chen Zhen.

“I have played Chen Zhen on [the] FIST OF FURY TV series 15 years ago so I’m particularly [enthusiastic] about this role,” said Yen. In terms of action, I have confidence of presenting a whole new Chen Zhen. I hope this will engender another wave of wushu trend, and [I] hope for this to become a classic.”

Carl Rinsch to direct Keanu Reeves in ‘47 Ronin’

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Carl Rinsch

TV commercial director Carl Rinsch has been picked to helm 47 RONIN with Keanu Reeves in the lead role. Rinsch, who is romantically involved with director Ridley Scott’s daughter, was originally attached to the latest film in the ALIENS franchise but word is that Fox preferred Scott so Rinsch found another mainstream project to make his directing debut.

47 RONIN will be Hollywood’s first attempt at telling the famous Japanese tale of how 47 ronin plotted and executed an assault on the home of an official to avenge their lord’s death. This version is being set up at Universal under producers Scott Stuber and Pamela Abdy.

Traditionally, the tale of the 47 ronin leans more towards the Japanese film genre of “jidai geki” rather than chambara, meaning that most filmic accounts of this real-life event are more dramatic than action-oriented. Yet in this case the script has been written by WANTED and FAST & FURIOUS scribe Chris Morgan, suggesting we may be in for more of an action-oriented take.

As for Rinsch, he has already established himself in the ad world for directing stylish, creative and futuristic TV spots for Mercedes and Heineken. It will be interesting to see what he does with a very well known, traditional Japanese tale, especially with Reeves in the lead.

Teacher busted for showing ‘Kung Fu Hustle’ in class

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

KUNG FU HISTLE

It was meant to be a reward for academic achievement but now a junior high school teacher who screened portions of Stephen Chow’s martial arts comedy KUNG FU HUSTLE to a classroom full of sixth graders is in the crosshairs of two angry parents who object to their son being shown an “R” rated movie.

This all came about after Caleb Gonzalez played a portion of KUNG FU HUSTLE for his sixth grade class at Standard Middle School last Friday. Like any normal kid, Heidi Flook’s son wanted to see the rest of the film and asked his parents to rent it. After looking at the movie, Pa Flook was shocked, claiming the movie contained “a lot of violence …. some foul language and nudity scenes.”

Apparently, Pa Flook missed the “R” rating on the box at the video store which references “sequences of strong stylized action and violence.” He may also have gotten the wrong movie altogether considering the closest thing to “nudity” in the movie is Ho Man-fai’s partially exposed butt crack.

The fallout from the Flook outrage included calls to the school principle, vice-principle and district superintendent.

In speaking to local news, principle Tonny Gizbertz said, “It’s clearly inappropriate, and it’s something I need to talk to the teacher about, and make sure it didn’t happen again.”

Ma Flook was not satisfied. “I think it’s my right as a parent to know what happened to a teacher that chooses to play an ‘R’ rated movie in front of my son,” she said.

Flook said that parents need to ask their kids what they did in class and if they’re not happy with the answer they need to start asking school officials a lot of questions.

“If something like this happens, to hold teachers, and staff, the superintendent — everyone accountable.”

I wonder what others think. Is KUNG FU HUSTLE too raunchy for an 11 or 12-year-old and should it have been shown in class without prior approval from parents? Any suggestions for other martial arts movies that Mr. Gonzalez could have shown instead? Should Stephen Chow movies be added to the curriculum in American public schools?

Trailer for Manny Pacquiao’s ‘Wapakman’

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Filipino champion boxer Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao is making his action film debut as the leading man in Filipino superhero movie WAPAKMAN. Directed by Topel Lee, this action comedy with sci-fi elements has been likened to KUNG FU HUSTLE. It also co-stars WWE’s Dave Batista.

11655-01

The 30-year-old Pacquiao, an actor, aspiring politician and boxing champ with seven world titles, last starred in ANAK NG KUMANDER (2008), a drama that flopped miserably at the local Filipino box office.

In the beginning of 2009 it was reported that Pacquiao met with Sylvester Stallone to discuss the possibility of doing a movie with the ROCKY star. Pacquiao’s manager Erik Pineda said that Pacquiao was up for a co-starring role in the film he described as being “something like RUSH HOUR.”

WAPAKMAN is set to premiere at the Metro Manila Film Festival on December 25.

Exclusive ‘Kung Fu Man’ set pics

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

KUNG FU MAN, starring Yuen Woo-ping protégé Tiger Chen and Andre “Chyna” McCoy is currently in production and Danny Shamon has filed this report with exclusive behind-the-scenes pictures.

Tiger Chen on the set of KUNG FU MAN.
Tiger Chen on the set of KUNG FU MAN.

Principal photography commenced on KUNG FU MAN last week, and is scheduled to continue through January in various locations throughout China. The intricate plot details are currently a guarded secret, but look for exclusive kungfucinema.com reports in the future.

KUNG FU MAN stars Tiger Chen, who best known for his stunt work on THE MATRIX and CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON. Tiger also had roles in MATRIX REVOLUTIONS and UNLEASHED. With his skills honed by the master of action Yuen Woo-Ping, he is highly regarded as the next major action star. Tiger is versatile, athletic and energetic. Although KUNG FU MAN is his first acting role, Chen is absolutely ready for a masterful breakout performance as the main character Ping.

The lead female role in KUNG FU MAN belongs to the alluring, vivacious and talented Vanessa Branch. The sultry Branch, who is no stranger to action, worked on all three PIRATES OF CARIBBEAN movies, Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 video game, and the upcoming Dante’s Inferno video game. Branch’s stunning looks have also landed her in Maxim and Stuff Magazines, in addition to several national TV commercials. Branch’s character name in the film is Susan.

KUNG FU MAN is directed by Ying Ning. Virtually unknown by western audiences, her previous movie is the critically acclaimed, avant guard film, PERPETUAL MOTION. The unusual work follows the lives of four women on New Year’s Eve, with the protagonist intricately and subversively trying to find out which of the other three slept with her husband.

As with many Chinese produced films, a second director is used for all of the action sequences and choreography in KUNG FU MAN. Brother of Yuen Woo-Ping , Yuen Cheung-Yan expertly handles the intense action directing duties and reunites him with fellow MATRIX alumni Tiger, Chyna, and Daxing Cheng. The seasoned veteran Yeun has worked on more than 60 films, all throughout the world, with various sizes of budgets, including CHARLIES ANGELS, DAREDEVIL, and THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM.

Andre “Chyna” McCoy (MATRIX, RED HERRING) plays the lead villain in KUNG FU MAN. Chyna’s strong features coupled with a commanding voice, bring out his natural ability to play antagonistic characters. Although officially an action comedy, KUNG FU MAN should bring out the intensity in Chyna’s acting arsenal. As of press time, specific details surrounding his character are perpetually evolving, even his character name is still a mystery!

Judging from the hi flying wire work involved, international cast, and well trained martial arts veterans, KUNG FU MAN is set to be a full force action film aimed at an international audience. The current release date is set for China next July.

Trailer for Michael Chuah’s ‘Fist of Dragon’

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

FIST OF DRAGON (2010)

The first trailer for Singapore/Chinese martial arts actioner FIST OF DRAGON is here. Malaysian writer-director Michael Chuah stars as a young, martial arts-trained man who while visiting his uncle discovers that his hometown has become overrun with violent gangsters so he steps in to defend the locals.

The action comedy also stars Wang Xiao-chen, comedian Henry Thia and Fiona Xie as a stuntwoman. It’s arriving in theaters in Singapore in 2010.

FIST OF DRAGON is a modest, $1 million co-production between Singapore’s Fusian Media and China’s Desen International Media but the extensive fight work, choreographed by Chuah and his stunt team, looks pretty intense from the trailer. I’m also seeing clean forms mixed in there with some rapid, Donnie Yen-style sparring.

Interestingly, Chuah wasn’t originally going to star in this movie but stepped into the lead role when his original pick didn’t pan out. Now, it’s looking like Michael Chuah is going to become the latest rising martial arts star to keep an eye on.

For regular updates on FIST OF DRAGON visit the film’s official Facebook page.

‘Tekken,’ the best fighting game movie since ‘Mortal Kombat?’

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

TEKKEN (2010)

That’s the suggested first impression made by IGN’s Jim Vejvoda who published a written preview of a promo trailer for director Dwight H. Little’s upcoming, live-action fighting video game TEKKEN, which premiered at the American Film Market but has yet to make its way, officially or otherwise, to the web.

“It felt like MORTAL KOMBAT crossed with X-MEN and with some of the sexy, hip, urban youth appeal of the FAST AND THE FURIOUS films. Unlike most other videogame movies, TEKKEN actually looked like it had something of a budget and that it wasn’t made for TV pilot money. Nothing in it looked particularly cheesy or embarrassing, which is kind of remarkable considering how much of the look of the game and its characters it retained,” said Vejvoda.

Based on a tournament-style video game filled with colorful competitors, TEKKEN’s script is written by Alan B. McElroy (THE MARINE, RAPID FIRE) and centers on Jin Kazama, a teenage martial artist who enters the “King of Iron Fist” tournament to challenge the world’s top fighters with the ultimate goal of taking on the person responsible for his mother’s death.

TEKKEN is only the latest in a string of fighting video game-to-movie adaptations ranging from recent releases DOA: DEAD OR ALIVE and STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI to other upcoming fighting game films THE KING OF FIGHTERS and a MORTAL KOMBAT reboot.

TEKKEN may have a literal leg up on the competition in that it features real martial arts-trained stars in key roles including leading man Jon Foo as Jin Kazama, Gary Daniels as Bryan Fury, Cung Le as Marshall Law, and Lateef Crowder as Eddy Gordo.

Behind the scenes is French tricking sensation and DISTRICT B13 star Cyril Raffaelli orchestrating the fight choreography. Raffaelli has already made the big time in Hollywood by taking on Bruce Willis in LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, as well as choreographing fight work for another video game-to-movie production, HITMAN.

“The fight scenes looked good and appeared well-crafted; slow-motion and wirework were evident but not overused (again, at least as far as the trailer is concerned),” said Vejvoda. “Judging from this footage, TEKKEN looks like a pretty decent (fighting) game-to-film adaptation. Hell, it looked better than WOLVERINE and that was released by a major studio.”

TEKKEN is an independent co-production of Crystal Sky Pictures, Japan’s GAGA and TEKKEN video game maker Namco. As yet, no U.S. distributor has picked up the film which is not surprising given the film’s lack of big-name stars. However, if Vejvoda’s first impressions are indicative of the film’s actual quality, fight fans who have grown disenchanted with Hollywood’s ability to translate fighting games into solid action movies may be in for a pleasant surprise.

‘The Eagle of the Ninth’ first look

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Even though it stars Channing Tatum, an action star genre fans love to hate, Roman period actioner THE EAGLE OF THE NINE is a film I am eagerly awaiting to see more of for its historical premise of a Roman centurion traveling into the heart of old Britannia’s northern reaches occupied by fierce Celtic tribal warriors. I’m also eager to see what fight work that sword master Richard Ryan (TROY, SHERLOCK HOLMES) has cooked up for this film. Recently uncovered at the American Film Market is a production still and detailed synopsis.

11500-01

Newly arrived in Britannia on his first command, young Centurion Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) heroically defends his ford against a massive Celtic attack but is so badly wounded that he is discharged from the army. Angry and bitter that his army career is over, Marcus chooses to risk his life on a seemingly impossible journey into the unconquered north to find the Eagle of the Ninth, the legendary golden standard lost fifteen years earlier when his father marched the Ninth Legion into the wilds of Scotland and never came back. As a companion, he takes his slave Esca (Jamie Bell), a Celt whose life he saved in a gladiatorial contest but who hates all things Roman. Their journey together into the wild north forgers the beginnings of a precarious relationship between them. But when they are captured by the Seal People, the most feared of all the Celtic tribes and the guardians of the lost Eagle, Esca claims that he is the master and Marcus his Roman slave – and Marcus has no choice but to entrust himself into the Celt’s hands. Just as Marcus fears Esca’s loyalty is lost and he is to remain a slave for life, the Celt proves true to his friend. Together they manage to retrieve the Eagle from an island temple and, keeping one step ahead of their pursuers in a thrilling chase to the safety of the border, they take a stand in a final, unexpected battle that reveals the secret of the Ninth.

‘Clash of the Titans’ teaser trailer

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

The first look at director Louis Leterrier’s new CLASH OF THE TITANS is here in the form of a teaser trailer. The film is a remake of the classic 1981 fantasy actioner, originally starring Harry Hamlim as Greek hero Perseus who does battle with Medusa and the Kraken monster to save Princess Andromeda.

CLASH OF THE TITANS (2010)

In this 300-style update, Sam Worthington takes on the lead role with Liam Neeson replacing Laurence Olivier as Zeus.

Leterrier should be familiar to action film fans as the helmer of French-Hollywood productions UNLEASHED and TRANSPORTER 2. He previously worked as a production assistant on Luc Besson’s THE MESSENGER so he already knew his way around a period epic before tackling this one.

While digital effects will undoubtedly be the centerpiece of the film’s action, the film also boasts fight choreography by veteran stuntman and coordinator Buster Reeves whose previous credits include fight work on MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III and THE DARK KNIGHT where he doubled Christian Bale. Hailing from Yorkshire, England, Reeves has a background in Wado Ryu karate and has captured several titles in competitive jujitsu.

CLASH OF THE TITANS will be making its way to theaters March 26, 2010.
