Behind-the-scenes footage from ‘Ninja Assassin’

German media outlet Spiegal TV has put together a behind-the-scenes look at James McTiegue’s NINJA ASSASSIN which is now filming in Berlin. Shown is footage of Korean superstar Rain in ninja garb, covered in blood and briefly being interviewed in English. Also briefly shown is Rain’s co-star, British actress Naomie Harris.

Additionally, new official photos have been released. The most promising one shows Rain wielding two swords, shirtless and covered in blood and scars. That’s called smart marketing folks. It appeals to men and women at the same time but for different reasons, well, in most cases. I’ll focus on what appeals to me and that’s blood. If this movie is really an attempt to update the 1980s ninja craze as the casting addition of Sho Kosugi suggests then blood and guts need to be in this movie and in ample supply. You can’t have a ninja assassin running around playing nicey nice with the bad guys by offering judo chops to the back of the neck or Jackie Chan-style comedy sparring. Heads must roll and blood must flow freely.

Looking at the video, Rain’s English sounds very good and we finally get to see him in action, albeit very briefly during a melee exchange with several attackers. He performs a solid set of rehearsed movements that could end up looking very good on screen if the editing and camera work are not too intrusive. Color me cautiously optimistic at this point.

We saw the special trailer put together by Dark Castle for the Ninja Assassin team's appearance at Comicon last week. It was very intense fighting action using weapons of various sorts and enough red "raining" in all directions to satisfy any hard core ninja film fan. The actor Rain trained intensely for the role and LOOKS/MOVES ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. Also heard the screenwriter J. Michael Stravzinsky talk earlier that day about visiting the set and being blown away by the stunts Rain performed sans wire, sans a double. We're really looking forward to this one.
