Chris Yen briefly shows off some of her martial arts moves in a new Cannes trailer for Russell Mulcahey’s GIVE ‘EM HELL, MALONE. With its violence, stripped down art direction and attitude, the film has a rugged and retro noir vibe that so far looks quite appealing.
Thomas Jane stars as a tough private eye who goes toe to toe with gangsters in an effort to protect a valuable secret. As AICN points out in their coverage, it features a solid cast of veteran actors including Ving Rhames, Doug Hutchison and Leland Orser.
Of course, I’m most interested to see what Yen pulls off in her role. Her character so far reminds me of Lucy Liu’s over-the-top femme fatale performance in PAYBACK. That was the film that put Liu on a course for more prominent action roles in films like CHARLIE’S ANGELS and KILL BILL: Vol. 1. Although I highly doubt GIVE ‘EM HELL, MALONE will garner the same attention that a Mel Gibson movie would it still might provide a solid launch pad for Yen, who as many readers here know is the wushu-trained younger sister of Donnie Yen and has more than enough fighting chops to go the distance if given a chance.
