It has been confirmed that JET LI’S FEARLESS: DIRECTOR’S CUT, Universal’s highly anticipated re-release of Ronny Yu’s Huo Yuanjia biopic promising nearly 40 minutes of additional footage is missing the director’s cut. Released July 8th, it promised three versions of the movie, one of which was supposed to be the complete two hour and 21 minute director’s cut. However, upon inspecting the two-disc release purchased from Walmart today both discs contain only 103-minute international and theatrical versions. Other readers have been e-mailing and posting messages on this site stating the same problem which suggests this defect is widespread.

Additionally, both discs appear to function erratically in my player. Disc two displays nothing but pixels and disc one periodically will not start up. I was only able to confirm the contents of disc two by using a disc burning tool. Both discs appear to be identical and the director’s cut is no where to be found despite what the back cover clearly states.

Universal was unavailable for comment at the time of writing and an e-mail sent Thursday has so far gone unanswered.

At this point I would suggest that anyone who is considering buying this release to not do so until Universal releases corrected discs and issues a statement, preferably along with a recall.

For those who have already purchased the defective FEARLESS discs and are unable to return them to the store, try contacting Universal direct during normal, weekday business hours. You may also want to notify your local retailer.

    That's good to hear, Mediaguy. At least they are willing to oblige poor saps like us who were lucky enough to get the defects. And I agree that something like this should not have happened in the first place.

    I just received my corrected Disc 1 from Universal customer service. I mailed back the defective on July 24th and received my replacement today. That's pretty good timing but never should've happened in the first place.

    I just popped it in and it's great. I knew immediately that it was different as it started with Michelle Yeoh speaking a modern day Olympic conference of some sort .... I can't wait to watch the whole thing this week.

    To all that is looking to buy.....I just bought this last week and i have the right versions here is what to look for....before you open it look at the dvd spine there is a number right above the words dvd video. To tell if you have the right version there should be a small dot in front of that number and one behind it. If you dont see the dots dont buy it

    Oh my.. I just read your request !James! and I just sent Disc 1 on its way back this morning in the Universal postage paid return envelope.

    I hope they actually have fixed the issue and are not just sending out a replacment disc with same content issue. ... because if I have to wait again for real correction, I'll be ticked .. but what can little o' me do about it. nuttin.

    I live in Canada but bought my copy in the United States. Because of this, after both phoning and emailing Universal Home Entertainment, they tell me they will not help me because I live in Canada. So, if anyone has received the postage paid envelope from Universal so they can return their DVD, would you mind posting the address so that I can send my back to them direct and include my own postage paid envelope for them to return the correct copy to me.

    Thanks for the help.

    Erm, the 'artwork' should describe the quality :).

    I purchased it not knowing of these quality issues and, indeed, find that both discs were pressed with the same content. I do not have any playability issues on either disc. I'm just very disappointed about the omission of the very reason people would purchase this re-release. It seems Universal needs someone who actually cares in charge of quality control all-the-way from A to Me. :}
