First group shot of ‘The Expendables’

By Mark Pollard | Published October 8, 2009

Say hello to every film villain’s worst nightmare. It’s the first group shot of the dream team of action heroes in Sylvester Stallone’s THE EXPENDABLES. This badass crew includes (from left to right) Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Jet Li, Stallone, Jason Statham, and Dolph Lundgren, all portraying a team of mercenaries hired to take out a South American dictator. Not pictured are additional action stars appearing in the movie including Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Gary Daniels.

Although we won’t get to see the finished product until August 20th, 2010 when it blasts its way into theaters, the film has been generating massive hype online thanks to its star-studded cast.

I’d ask why it took a studio this long to get this many veteran action stars together but I already know the answer. Money. Granted, not all of these guys are A-list talent at the moment and some like Willis and Schwarzenegger are only making cameos, but the cost of all the star salaries would normally break the company bank and there is no guarantee that simply putting everyone in one film would equal box office success. Although in this case, Stallone would have to screw up on a Mel Gibson scale to dampen the current potential for this movie.

Miraculously, the budget for this movie has so far stayed south of $100 million but if it’s really successful I would expect the sequel to be bigger. Let’s just hope a few of these movies can get cranked out before some of these action film vets have to take down bad guys from power chairs. I’d still sooner pay to see that than another TRANSFORMERS or fighting video game movie.

I'm not sure I believe Hollywood can still make good action films like they did in the past. And any talk of P G 13 certification is the kiss of death as far as I'm concerned. I want to see Full Contact brutality, swearing, extreme violence, real stunts blood and gore and not exactly a priority but may be some hot naked chicks...

ERRRM i dont see Steve austin?
  • You're right. He isn't pictured. Austin's name is tagged because he was mentioned and he's an emerging screen-fighting actor of note. Sorry to disappoint.

Doubt Rambo IV would've made more money at PG-13, because the target audience wouldn't care what's going on in Burma and would be too young to remember Rambo, anyway. That's why they had to make Die Hard IV into a War Games-wannabe-because it'd bomb if it was a real Die Hard sequel like part III. Anyway, dunno why I have to wait 'til August for this sucker if it's in the can. Bring it out in April or May, dammit!

Anyway, speaking of gun-play flicks, when are you guys gonna cover Boondock Saints II?
  • Awesome overload.. PLEASE don't let this get screwed up *prays*.
  • I don't know if I've ever seen that much awesome in one screen shot! Let's hope they don't muck up the potential of this flick.

even if the theatre version is PG 13 im guessing the DVD will be unrated. at least im hoping.

i read somewhere that they are screening both pg-13 and R versions, and that they may go with a pg-13 release if they believe it has more potential to make money. iirc some producer about stallones latest rambo said it coulduve made more money had they released it as pg-13. i personally really really hope it gets released with an R rating pushed to the max!!!
