Wow, I had no idea. RIP Guru, I alway thought of Gangstarr as the last great DJ/MC duo in hip hop.

RIP the self proclaimed "King of Monotone." I can't believe Guru has gone. I'll be playing Gangstarr all day.

Man; Daily Operation was one of the first hip hop records I bought as a kid. Premier's beats were sick and Guru's smooth monotone style, it just worked on so many levels. Those two Jazzmatazz records he put out in the 90's were outstanding. He was connecting Hip Hop to Jazz with groups like Brand New Heavys; just trailblazing. I don't see that kind of innovation and originality in Hip Hop today. I think Hard to Earn will always be my favorite Gangstarr record though; Code of the Streets, Dwick, Mass Appeal, plus they introduced Jeru the Damaga and Group Home on that record. The kid will surely be missed.

Sad, liked his style and the crossover with jazz. In fact, the only rap concert I ever went to was Guru's Jazzmatazz (Amsterdam, Escape), which featured if I remember correctly Donald Byrd and Roy Ayers with a preshow from Digable Planets.

Time to spin some discs
