I know, I know, you're thinking: "Lovecraft's based movies are garbage! Why should I care?". And you are right...

But when you may not know, is that Guillermo Del Toro's dream project is the bring At the Mountains of madness to the big screen one day. Well, according to AICN, the day is upon us. He will soon be realising his dream, in 3D (yeah I know) with James Cameron as a producer.

A Lovecraft adaptation by Guillermo Del Toro? It looks too perfect to be true! Who knows, if it turns out to be succesfull, maybe someone will do The Call of Cthulhu! They better start shooting soon before Cthulhu awakens from his timeless sleep. Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn. The stars are right...

Whoah, you may have overlooked a minor masterpiece:

This is an independent production that, IMO is FANTASTIC---the best Lovecraft adaptation I've seen. And I believe the same crew is just finishing up "The Whisperer in the Darkness".

Yeah, been wanting to see Call of Cthulhu for a while, and been expecting the release of The Whisperer in the Darkness. But you know, although the HPLHS looks to pull more then it should be possible to dream of with ridiculously low budgets, it still would be nice to see a big budget adaptation. But then again, it would probably not be as faithfull as what those passionate guys did...

Agreed----it would be awesome if that Mountains of Madness production combined a big budget, high level talent AND a real faithfulness to the source material. That's something we haven't really seen, and I'll hold out hope for that one.

But yeah, HPLHS' Call of Cthulhu is one I'd highly recommend---for having such a limited budget, they really did a very classy, intelligent, ambitious and extremely faithful adaptation.

I think the Gordon/Yuzna films are overlooked classics, while not true adaptions, they mashed up the Lovecraft mythos with a great deal of success, Re-animator, From Beyond and one of my favorite horror movies of the last decade - Dagon(which was more of an adaption of The Shadow Over Innsmouth), which didn't even get a US release:sad:

That being said I was bummed Del Torro went off the Hobbit but if there was any movie I wanted to see him move to it's this one, there will definetely have to be some changes made from the original story, it will be interesting to see what he brings.
