Argento's Sleepless dubbing

Why the heck were the voices dubbed in English, as well as shot in English? Von Sydow's voice and the killer's voice are real, but everybody else is dubbed with an American accent? The dubbing cheapened wasted the movie. Why didn't he just shoot the movie in English with the actor's real Italian accents? ANybody know what he was trying to prove by doing this?
