Directed by Raymond Yip (“The Warlords”) and Manfred Wong (prolific writer/producer of hundreds of popular titles), “Bruce Lee, My Brother” is a biographical film about Bruce Lee's teenage life. It begins in 1940, his date of birth, and ends in 1959, when he’s off to America with a $100 bucks in his pocket.

The film opens with a warm introduction from Bruce Lee’s real siblings: Robert Lee, his younger brother; and Phoebe Lee, his older sister. Robert Lee not only serves as producer, but also provides much of what the movie is based on, hence, the film’s title.

I’ve come to terms with the fact that all biographic films (and to a lesser extent, books) are mostly bullshit, and “Bruce Lee, My Brother” is no exception. Sure, Robert Lee and Phoebe Lee were brought in for a “a historically accurate account of their brother's life,” but let’s get real here. In outline form, sure, it’s probably a little accurate, but movies are made to sell tickets and everything is exaggerated to add more pizzaz. Again, fine with me, as long as we don't get out of hand and start throwing in Jackie Chan-style choreography and giant samurai robots in dream sequences.

I have read that “Bruce Lee, My Brother” is supposedly the first in a series of movies to be based on Bruce Lee’s life. If this does happen, my guess is that the 2nd one would revolve around his Seattle Years (1959) and end with his with early, ill-fated Hollywood career (“The Green Hornet, etc.” 1966-1969). The 3rd would most likely take place in the early 1970’s, with Bruce returning to Hong Kong to negotiate deals with Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest, his rise to stardom, and end with his untimely death.

Here’s what you can expect from “Bruce Lee, My Brother”:

- Early film role depiction
- Discipline from his father
- A lot of cha cha
- A few street brawls
- Some opium
- Love triangle
- A little training with Ip Man
- Amateur boxing fight
- More brawls

I’ll be surprised if there is a follow up. If there is, it’ll be watered down even more, thanks to Linda Lee; Just check out the disclaimer before the credits start rolling:

“This production is a dramatized story of Bruce Lee’s early life, based substantially on the recollections of the siblings of Bruce Lee. This production is in no way connected to, or associated with, BRUCE LEE ENTERPRISES LLC, the widow, children and estate of Bruce Lee, and the materials used in connection with this production, or the matters depicted in it, have not been provided by same."

Linda and Shannon Lee are the “Yoko Ono” of the Bruce Lee Estate, and that’s being way too nice. They favor the God-like, flawless “legend” of Bruce Lee more than the actual facts. “Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story” (1993) and “The Legend of Bruce Lee” (2008) is what they want you to believe.

I don’t know about you guys, but I want to see Bruce smoking joints and eating hash. I want to see him do Betty Ting Pei, Nora Miao and Maria Yi doggy-style; on the same night, in the same room, at the same time. I want to see him run after Lo Wei with a bloody, Swiss Army Knife (the deluxe one with the scissors)! I want to see him stick a steroid needle through his fucking eye ball! Screw the giant samurai robot! Okay, I guess I’m getting a little out of hand.

There’s always “Bruce Lee, Bruce Lee: His Last Days, His Last Nights,” I suppose.

Anyways, enough about the white bitches who continue to give us Bruce Lee action figures, lame video games and statues in places I’ll never visit.

“Bruce Lee, My Brother” is a good film. At times, you get the feeling that there wasn’t enough content (made up or not) to warrant an interesting story about Bruce’s teenage life, but for the most part, it stays at a steady pace.

It’s a very lavish looking production. The sets, the clothing, the soundtrack, and the hues applied to the film, bring the 40’s and 50’s alive.

Aarif Lee, who portrays Bruce Lee, plays the part to a T. There’s no doubt in my mind that this is the best Bruce Lee respresentation ever (although, there is a BIG drop down after this film). The way Aarif walks, smiles, talks, dances, moves - you totally see “Bruce.” It’s worth to watch this movie for Aarif’s epic performance alone.

Tony Leung Ka-fai (Bruce’s father), Christy Chung (Bruce’s mother) are also fantastic and chosen with care. Look out for many cameo appearances, including ones by Anders Nelson (“Way of the Dragon”), Kristy Yang (“The Stormriders”) and even Chin Kar Lok (also action director), who pays a young Shek Kin.

The film ends with interesting closing credits, which compare production photo shoots to actual photos from the Lee Family album. It really shows how much time, effort, and quality was put in to trying to get the images as close to the originals as possible.

As long as you’re not expecting a whole lot of action, or anything during Bruce's stardom era, you shouldn't be disappointed.

I respect the entire "Bruce Lee, My Brother" crew - they kept it as real as they could for this kind of film. I'm sure if Linda or Shannon had a handle, we'd not only get Bruce dreaming about Linda years before meeting her, but we'd probably see him doing triple flips off heavenly unicorns as well.

***Spoiler****

Yeah it was o.k, if only they had more fight scenes I would be awake throughout the movie.. Was that one fight scene with the white guy in the barn yard or something real??? Did Bruce really fought the guy twice??
I also didn't buy the fact that Bruce Lee would go out of his way to save a crack head (his friend) towards the end of the movie... Like Bruce would give a shit about some dope fiend who he could've bone his girlfriend, LOL...

I walked into it expecting a drama more than anything, which is probably why I didn't mind it so much.

It'll be interesting to see how the handle Bruce's stardom era IF they do it. Something tells me that Linda and Shannon keep the Bruce Lee estate far more up their asses than Yoko Ono and the Presleys combined.

He'll be out on Groundhog's Day. He's busy putting out 10th generation VHS tapes of Filipino war movies on DVD to capitalize on EXPENDABLES.

I kinda like this guy's style. He knows what sells.

Til this day I keep on wondering how he weaseled his way into the CURSE OF THE DRAGON documentary. It's not like he doesn't know anything about Bruce, it just seems like he doesn't belong in that documentary. lol

He's the only one who's willing to tell the truth about Bruce. Rumor has it that the estate blacklisted him from putting out legit Bruce products (aka Tracking the Dragon).

I totally agree Makone!!! Shannon Lee and her BLE has even made treats against her own flesh and blood "to protect the integrity of the Bruce Lee brand":

"This, unfortunately, includes the recently announced biopic by JA Media and Robert Lee.”

I finally received my copy on Friday and watched it yesterday. In two words... I'm impressed.
This is by far the absolute best screen treatment of Lee's early years I've seen. The care and detail that went into this production clearly comes across on screen and kudos to Robert, Phoebe, Peter and Agnes Lee in seeing that this got out before they were no longer around to tell the story. We already lost Peter.
The young man in the lead playing Lee, Aarif, did an admirable job and did not take it over the top. I'd very much like to see him continue the part if they decide to follow up with the Seattle years and the return to HK.
I have always wondered why the films made about Bruce Lee totally ignored his family. They were essential to his development, shaped his values, and, just like anyone else's family contributed majorly to his life.

This film rests alone with my Bruce Lee collection as a piece of history that I'm so proud to have enjoyed a peek.

Exactly. I'm crossing my fingers they'll make a part 2 and 3.

I'd die to see the next, and the next next part. Bruce's life is still too much for 2, or 3 2 hour movies :( The TV series could have done well with a wealth of 50 eps, if it had NOT had anything to do with the BL Estate, but it had, and what a shameful waste :(

Love this film, even if it's not a masterpiece. For the first time I felt like someone else was Bruce. Aarif Lee and the others did a great job :)

Just curious, I knew Margaret Leung was the daughter of Leung Sing-po, but was that Pearl Tso in the film really the same Pearl Tso to whom Bruce wrote a early 1960s letter confiding his thoughts, his dreams and goals ?

Despite i had gotten last month i hadn't watched it till now. Aarif was impressive as Bruce Lee better than most actors playing him in past flims and other projects that i have seen, the rest of the cast was impressive given out decent performance's perhaps the only Bruce Lee Biopic that talks about the Lee Family unlike Dragon the Bruce Lee story. The Fights were impressive although there wasn't much which expected there wasn't going to be it didn't stop me from enjoying the flim in other way's i hope there's a follow up.

Yes. Isn't that great? The other special thing about this film is they let you know exactly how famous the Lee family was, and how many social contacts Bruce had before returning to the HK film world after his 12 yr. stay in America. They hosted parties and gatherings with a veritable who's-who of the HK entertainment industry.

Wow ! I mean just thinking that he'd write such a letter to his ex-heart-throp is interesting

What a family !! I'm Vietnamese and my family was much as traditionally Oriental, so i can guess how heavilly the traditions, the people, and the industry influenced Bruce. His friends and siblings are protrayed lovably too !

And that's what Linda Emery Bleeker Cadwell wasn't willing to tell us. "Her" Bruce goes on : "I'm American, HK is an industrial slum, NO movies there, and my father is an old, stupid, superstitous Chinaman and i only got this Gwailo chick for all my life and no other relationships " Lol, the Linda Lee Story is sensational that way :xd: Wonder how she and Shannon would react :xd:

People need to know how full of love and care and authentic My Brother is, we've had a handful of so called biopics but they just increase the confusion of who Bruce Lee was, leading to many thinking "Oh, it's awful exploitaion, the filmakers need money again" about it :crossedlips: I'm sad.

I have a change of heart, although the action wasn't what my brain wanted, I think the filmmakers are going the character study route, and I applaude them for doing that... I envision young Bruce as this outrageous punk little kid just beating people up and messing around with chicks..
The movie made Bruce Lee as if he was a saint or something a person with deep character and integrity... Is the 2nd movie going to be like a Jim Morrison biopic where he comes to America and things just start to get crazy and intense?? Kung Fu, drugs, whores, is the Bruce Biopic I want to see, lol...

You're going to be waiting for a long time. If anything, you'll get another George Tan-produced movie about Big Pun or something like Tupac Shakur: Thug Immortal.

Agreed. We shouldn't be exposed to what Linda wants to show us about Bruce Lee, we want to see the truth as much as it pains us to see that Bruce wasn't perfect but it never stopped us from liking and admiring Bruce as a person and Martial Artist. Bruce Lee my brother was the best bio pic of Bruce by far not that i'm not knocking Dragon. : The Bruce Lee Story: it had it's up's and down's of telling the story of Bruce Lee most importantly it never mentioned he had other family members in his life leaving just the only child making his Father never more than what Linda and the other people involved wanted us to see.

just watched Young Bruce Lee aka Bruce Lee My Brother..
Sorry to say.. even if some of you like it i must say it was a great display on how to make a movie out of nothing.. the storytelling is ok but its nothing that grips a hold of you. The story of Bruce Lee could be dealt with better.. i mean ok, it was much like a biography and that is ok, but they threw in some fights with the drug cartel that dont seems so realistic, chose your way, do a fantasy bio like ip man or do a drama bio..
we dont get to see any of Bruce training in MA or his way into modern cinema even if it ends by him going to the US.. we just get to see the backhead of the great Ip Man..
in this movie Bruce turns out to be a dancing street brawler with a broken heart.. but there is no heart given to the storytelling to let us as a audience in to the emotions..
sorry.. but great fail..
