Morgan Freeman played detective Alex Cross in two films based on James Patterson's series of mysteries with the detective. The first was KISS THE GIRLS (1997) and the second was ALONG CAME A SPIDER (2001).

A third movie is in the works, titled I, ALEX CROSS, based off another Patterson novel. However, Freeman is not going to return as Cross, but rather the one almost set to sign on is...Tyler Perry!..and no, he will not write, direct, produce, like his other films. He wanted to try something outside of his usual fare and I thought he played the Starfleet Commander well in STAR TREK.If he does sign, it will be quite interesting to see him as Alex Cross.

The Novels are excellent and to be honest I thought Morgan Freeman was to old to play that part, Alex Cross is a Younger Man. So I'll be looking forward to seeing Tyler Perry in this role.

Any film is worse off without Morgan Freeman though...

Van Wilder would have been great with Morgan Freeman in the lead...

I don't think even the great Morgan Freeman could've pulled that one off.

Who is Tyler Perry BTW?

Who is Tyler Perry BTW?

He is a multi-talented filmmaker and playwright (I like his plays and movies...very funny IMO). He is best known for his creation of the character known as Madea, which he plays in a series of plays and movies. He also is responsible for two TV series on TBS, HOUSE OF PAYNE and MEET THE BROWNS. He usually writes, directs, produces, and stars in his own movies, but had a cameo appearance in J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK reboot. This will be his first lead starring role in a film outside of his own as Rob Cohen is slated to direct the Alex Cross movie.

He recently directed the nearly all-female cast film FOR COLORED GIRLS (based on a popular 70's play) and will bring back his trademark character in April's MADEA'S BIG HAPPY FAMILY.

Update:

Dark Horizons (http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/19889/matthew-fox-ed-burns-join-i-alex-cross-) reports that Matthew Fox and Edward Burns will join Tyler Perry in I, ALEX CROSS.

Fox will play the villain of the film, a serial killer who kills Cross' wife after the detective stops one of his crimes. As for Burns, he will play Cross' partner in the film.
