miller's crossing , state of grace & Chopper were pretty good ... and of course any yakuza themed flicks by Miike are a given

For a really good Yakuza movie, you should see the Takeshi Kitano film Brother, but not the American cut. For a really original Yakuza movie, you should see Sonatine, which is also by Kitano.

Question: Hana - Bi doesn't really qualify as a gangster movie does it?

I'M NEW TO THIS BUT I THOUGHT INFERNAL AFFAIRS HAD ENOUGH TO BE CONSIDERED A SLIGHT GANGSTA/SUSPENSE FLICK ... THEN AGAIN I'VE NOT MUCH TO COMPARE IT TO ASIAN CINEMA WISE ... WHAT EXISTING ONES ARE COMMONLY CONSIDERED AS SAY THE BEST 5 ?

I'd advise everyone to see the ganster movie "Oscar" starring Sylvester Stallone... its better than all of Scorcses movies combined.

Don't forget John Woo's great movies (I saw A Better Tomorrow here, but...)
The Killer, Hard Boiled and Once A Thief (not so much a gangster movie, but... Maybe if you bend the rules a little).

I have to agree with the users who said the Young and Dangerous series these were fun action movies about triad members with characters that came back again in later entries in the series. I like movies with a little backstory and these along with The godfather 1, 2 and yes even 3 have a great mythology where you can see the progress of it's characters.:hat

It seems like most of the people in this thread can't read very well. He said he wanted recommendations on Asian gangster films. The Untouchables, Goodfellas, Scarface, Once Upon A Time In America etc are Hollywood films.

Anyways, i recommend A Better Tomorrow, Hard Boiled, The Killer, Sonatine and Bullet In The Head.

I realize that this is not an asian gangster film, but if you haven't checked it out yet, I IMPLORE you to go see/rent/buy CITY OF GOD now!!!
The movie is off the toilet chain!!
It's been described as the "Brazillian Goodfellas" because of it's richly textured, multi-generational (60'-80's) narrative, but it's sooooo much deeper than that.
Great characters, incredible use of music, brilliant editing /pacing and above all, a compelling, harrowing, exciting story (based on true accounts of Rio's most notorious drug dealing gangs).
Phenomenal film.

Easily on my all-time Top 10.

As far as Asian gangster flicks go, most of the ones mentioned are excellent. Also check out:

Sevenhooks, doesn't the dvd for City of God come out soon. I know it got postponed but I don't know if they settled on a firm release date yet. When it is released I will be getting it. It looks really good from all of the reviews.

I believe the DVD finally comes out in the US sometime in June.
After Miramax postponed it for the umpteenth time, I just said "f#ck it" and ordered the DVD from Amazon UK.
Get it by hook or by crook. You WON'T be disapointed!!
