Has anyone seen this TV Series on Cable? I just finished watching season #1 and I enjoyed it a lot, very original and a great cast! I cannot wait to watch the rest of this series.

An interesting and original idea that's very skillfully executed, Showtime's Dexter is never less than watchable, often quite compelling, and sometimes thoroughly riveting. As the 12 episodes from the show's first season (packaged here in a four disc set) reveal, it's also the epitome of "high concept," a kind of Silence of the Lambs for the C.S.I. generation. Creator-executive producer James Manos Jr.'s title character, one Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall of Six Feet Under renown), works for the Miami Police Department as an blood spatter analyst, visiting crime scenes and helping figure out what happened. He has an avocation, too: during his off hours, he tracks down some very, very bad people who for various reasons have eluded the proper authorities. Seems his adoptive father, a cop himself, taught the kid how to channel his dark side in a "positive" direction; and so, having captured these evildoers (including a child molester-murderer and a recidivist drunk driver with a trail of bodies in his wake), Dex dispatches them with clinical precision, thus making him a serial killer who snuffs serial killers. But there's more--much more, as it turns out. By his own description, Dexter is "a monster," an empty shell who fakes all human interactions and admits to no real feelings for anything or anyone, including his foster sister (Jennifer Carter) and his nominal girlfriend (Julie Benz), a battered spouse who's as uninterested in sex as he is. There's an explanation for Dexter's weirdness, of course, one so deep and traumatic that even he isn't aware of it. It's gradually revealed over the course of the season as he and the cops (who include Erik King, Lauren Velez, and David Zayas, all first-rate) track down the so-called "Ice Truck Killer," a fellow monster whose grisly m.o. both fascinates and taunts our hero, leading to a genuinely shocking and squirm-inducing finale. Dexter can be a bit arch, with an ironic, too-hip-for-the-room tone that get a little old. Still, it's a safe bet that anyone who views this first season will be salivating for the second.

Dexter is based on the compelling novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay. Orphaned at the age of four and harboring a traumatic secret, Dexter Morgan (Dexter Morgan (Emmy- and Golden Globe- nominated actor Michael C. Hall from "Six Feet Under") is adopted by a police officer who recognizes Dexter's homicidal tendencies and guides his son to channel his gruesome passion for human vivisection in a constructive way - by killing those heinous perpetrators that are above the law or who have slipped through the cracks of justice. A respected member of the police force, a perfect gentleman and a man with a soft spot for children, it's hard not to like Dexter. Although his drive to kill is unflinching, he struggles to emulate normal emotions he doesn't feel, and to keep up his appearance as a caring, socially responsible human being.

OK I'm a total Dexter fan now! But some of the episode I'm like WTF! And I'm not going to ruin any season for anybody but the last episode of season #4 I hated, I couldn't believe what happened! I'm still in shock, I want to know why they did that!

I just finished watching the entire 5 seasons of Dexter and I think this show is great. I wasn't happy with how a few of the series ended, but I guess that is what draws you so much into his Dark Passenger side of him. I cannot wait for the 6th. season to start.

I really enjoy Dexter and loved the first four seasons (Season 4 with John Lithgow was awesome), but Season 5 was a definitely step down in quality IMO. Julia Stiles is a horrible actress and I hated the character she played and how Dexter interacted with her. Only having Peter "RoboCop" Weller guest starring on the show saved the season from being a total write off.

TheDenizen: Really you think season 5 was a let down? I thought it was one of the best seasons! I feel totally opposite of what you said...That's why you gotta love this site everyone always has a different opinion on everything we watch.

I thought season 5 had its highs and lows. Highs were (SPOLER ALERT!!!!!!!) Jonny Lee Miller as the main bad guy and Peter Weller as the washed-up ex-cop. A definite low was Julia Stiles. I just don't rate her as an actress. She just came across as whiney in this role. Also, found the end a bit to similar to season 4, where he also had to throw the cops off his trail and rescue someone in the nick of time. For season 6, they definitely need to up their game and push the envelope. We need to see Dexter stressed to breaking point and beyond next season. My money's on his sister finding out the truth of his dark passenger.

True I wasn't really happy with how it ended either, and I did liked Julia Stiles performance I thought she was a good fit for Dexter. I agree with you about the Cop thing, but I think Quinn is definitely onto him, I hope to see some major changes in season 6 also.

I absolutely hated the Lumen character (I just wanted Dexter to kill her the whole time), and the guy who plays season 5's serial killer can't hold a candle to the awesome, intensely creepy performance of John Lithgow in Season 4.

Plus I've always thought that Julia Stiles is a pretty crummy actress. She displayed an acting range of three whole emotions during her entire run on the show: fear, confusion and anger.....and she used the same facial expression for fear and confusion.

Just my $0.02

John Lithgow was fantastic in season 4. His performance will be very hard for the show's producers to find anyone to top it. I was also saddened that Peter Weller's character wasn't onscreen more in season 5.

John Lithgow is a great Actor hands down, I'll tell you who I would love to see as a serial Killer on Dexter, Christopher Walken! He could play the shit out of any role!
TheDenizen I think your being hard on Julia Stiles she might not be the greatest of actresses but I think she played the part great you have to consider what she went through.

Yes! Chris Walken would be a fantastic choice, but I see him more as an agent type, maybe the one who finally discovers Dexter's secrets?

Walken would be super sweet.
