It comes out tomorrow and I'm suprised no ones made an official thread yet. So far all of Zack Snyder's movies have been impressive and I expect no leass from this one. Anyone seeing this opening day?

I'm gonna see if the wife will let me have a guy day/nite and go take this in next week. I've enjoyed what I've seen of Snyder's work so far.

Visually it looks great, but it's gotten pretty panned so far.

Yup, the critics are saying it's entirely style over substance and that, sadly, what style there is can't carry the film at all.

It sucks. The critics pound all of his movies to the ground. I'm about to leave now and see this so hopefully I like it...

Why couldn't this movie go straight to bluray/dvd?? It looks just like a video game and like a video game it's best for home entertainment....

A chaingun wielding mechanical samurai probably means very little to most of this film's reviewers. That will always be their own problem. Obviously large demographics and the world of film critics just haven't matched up yet.

I will definitely go to the theater for a purely visual experience, wouldn't be a kung fu fan otherwise. Larger screens don't affect my appreciation of the plot or many other filmic qualities.......

I wouldn't listen to the reviews and judge for yourself. I went with about 10 people and had a good time, but a lot of my party didn't get it or didn't like it. Some thought it was okay and one thought it would be better R. I think this movie is worth seeing at least once, especially in theaters. My opinion is expressed in this review, which I rarely write:

***May Contain Tiny Spoilers***

As a Zack Snyder, I was thrilled to see him release an original piece of work. I watched this movie opening day which I've never done before just to support him. So was my time wasted? The movie follows Babydoll, as she bands with four other girls in a plan to escape the mental asylum her evil step father sent her to. The girls have five days to see through their plan before Babydoll is lobotomized.

Okay, this movie is no Inception but I can see why some may think of it when watching Sucker Punch. To escape her unfortunate reality Babydoll escapes into a dream world set up like a high class brothel which she uses dance to escape into other branches/levels of reality where the girls fight fantasy creatures in search of the five items they need to escape.

Well this is a Zack Snyder movie, so if you will complain about anything in this movie it shouldn't be the graphics. Cgi is top form in Sucker Punch and is breathtakingly beautiful and full of detail. Other than the amazing cgi, and saturated colors, it wouldn't be a Zack Snyder movie without the epic slow-mo. I wouldn't say the movie had an abundance of unnecessary slow-mo but their were more than a few. I think the scenes were spread out well. In one particular scene towards the end, the slow mo kicks in full gear and what results is one of the most amazing special effects fight scene I have seen in awhile. All the fight scenes in general worked very well and look like effort was taken into making them. It is definitely a film highlight. One thing I really enjoyed about the movie was the soundtrack. The music choices fit perfectly with the setting and kept my head slightly nodding throughout. Some people might call these scenes too "music video like," but I think they worked well. The acting wasn't too shabby with stand out performances from Jena Malone aka Rocket and Oscar Issac aka Blue Jones.

All in all. The movie had several twists and turns that will hit you like a "Sucker Punch." You won't expect some things. The movie actual has a pretty good message about stories and if you pay attention you should get it. This movie is not over complicated but a lot of people might not understand exactly whats going on. It is another good effort from Snyder but a movie that the majority probably wouldn't like which might hurt him. Overall, if your looking for an entertaining ride that makes you pay attention, and starring hot girls, this just might be your movie. If your expecting Inception or Kill Bill or whatever then this probably not you movie.

8/10 from me.

I saw this one opening day as well, with my daughter, we both enjoyed it.

Good review Lionclaw, I agree with your rating of 8/10. I look forward to seeing this one again when the blu-ray drops, hopefully with some extras.

The star of the film, the actress Emily Browning who played 'Baby Doll', also has a few songs on the soundtrack for the film. At the beginning of the film, you can hear her version of the Eurythmics classic song 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made of the This)'.

My wife promised me a night at the movies WITHOUT COMPLAINTS recently... I can't decide if I should blow it on this or Conan because, as I informed her, Green Lantern is exempt. (If the pre-release hype doesn't piss me off so bad I just plain skip the film then she has to go with me on the basis that I have been waiting for a Green Lantern film since like the day after I was born!)

This movie is terrible. A series of action scenes strung together by some hokey dialogue and bad acting. More slo mo than in 5 John Woo flicks. It just came off as being so repetitive with the cut-aways to the action scenes, and even the action scenes were not all that great. Maybe the one with them fighting the nazi cyborgs was alright. The CGI in the first action scene was pretty bad looking. This may be an odd complaint, but I also hated the music with lyrics being played in every scene, at least in the first half of the movie, where the lyrics are echoing what we are seeing on screen. Maybe one or two songs throughout the film would have sufficed. It was just too much. I found myself looking at my watch constantly, wondering when this was going to end. There was no mystery, no unexpected surprises. The ending, well, it wasn't worth sitting through even though it would be considered by some as a 'twist'. 3/10.

PS I enjoyed Watchmen, and I liked Dawn of The Dead. I haven't seen 300. I think a movie should be made so it can be appreciated by more than just hardcore fans of the director's style.

I think I'm gettin' old, as just watching the trailer gave me a headache. I think I'll just put Invincible Shaolin in the DVD player tonight instead.

(I did love "300", however)

Like I said. The majority probably wouldn't like it. Zack Snyder's movies all seem to be the love or hate type. And to answer what kungfusamurai said I did spot a a few cgi doubles that were a little bit obvious but it wasn't a big enough problem to through in my review. Maybe people will like the directors cut more. I think about 18 minutes of footage would be added. And an R rating. But really, you either like his movies or you don't. I rarely see in betweens.

I'd say go for it. Just keep an open mind and you should find it entertaining. If you hated his other films then you shouldn't waste your time and money, because you won't like it.

OK I just got home from seeing this movie, and I really did enjoy it. I liked the dream world and how see used it. I thought the CGI was awesome not very much with any real colors but I also liked that dark undertone it had. I thought the Samurai sequence could've been a little better, but the Nazi Zombie sequence was Off the Hook! Overall I thought it was really good, the end was a little hard to understand as to what happened to her.
See I didn't care for Watchmen it just didn't do it for me.

SPOILERS******

From what I've read from the reviewers on IMDB, and I agree too, was that the movie was really the POV of Sweet Pea. Now what I don't agree or understand is whether she really did stay at an insane asylum, and/or had a lobotomy, or if it's all just imaginary and she's just a weirdo. What also didn't make sense is if it's all in her head, then why did the bus driver figure into her fantasy world when that would have been the first time she saw him, or the boy on the bus. Unless the assumption is that she actually dies and the bus is really her going to heaven (or hell).

Either way, it doesn't matter to me. I just found the dialogue really cheesy, the entering and exiting of the fantasy worlds way too repetitive, and I didn't feel anything for anyone. It could have been done a lot better.

I don't think adding more stuff to the film will make me like it, if anything, it should have had stuff removed. One fantasy sequence would have been enough, instead of the same thing done over and over again. I don't know how, but I think this could have been done much better, maybe just having one overall dream sequence. Snyder should maybe return to his non-CGI roots, like he did with Dawn of The Dead, which I liked. And he should lay off the overly-stylized slo mo fight scenes. I mean, that who robot fighting sequence on the train was tedious and dull.

I saw a trailer for this the other day on TV and initially thought it looked intriguing. Then I saw that it had been rated 12A in this country. I was immediately put off because it looks like it should be extremely violent but clearly won't be. Upon reading this thread I found out its directed by Zack Snyder. I guess I must fall into the hate camp because I thought 300 absolutely sucked, could have and should have been a much better film.

I took in a matinee of this today and.........I liked it. It's definitely a big screen movie.

I thought it had an interesting premise for a plot. I was rooting for the girls. Oscar Isaac, who plays the main villain, did a really good job, I thought. He's not over the top but has a certain levelheaded charm and smarmy-ness. The girls were all pretty and not dressed overly slutty. And it wasn't obnoxious with profanity which I think is just lazy dialogue writing to be honest.

The cinematography and f/x were great and each action scenario was something different which was cool. They had both a Gothic and futuristic feel to them. The choreography was fast and tight though sometimes a little too much so. Snyder is a slo-mo master and there's a good bit of it but I thought he paced it well.

This movie is stylized violence/action. Snyder shoots scenes as though they were panels in a comic book. Personally, I kind of like that. To me it lends a certain artistic gravitas to the film even if it is considered to be nothing more that popcorn fare. But it works.

This movie could've been sooooooo much worse. (Think of the action movies you've seen before with a bunch of hot chicks who can't act verbally or physically that you literally suffered through hoping to find some redeeming quality in it and knowing all the while it ain't gonna happen.)

Personally, I've liked his work: Dawn of the Dead, Watchmen, 300. This doesn't quite achieve their levels but I still liked it.

If you think you'd watch it at least once, go see it on the big screen. That's what it was made for.

Imagine if they added the Thai chick from Chocolate JeeJa Yanin and Michelle Yeoh
into the mix??
Anyway is this better than D.O.A for the folks who've seen Sucker punch??

D.O.A. is more MA heavy than this. SP has some MA tossed in but it's not the focus.

no offence Shaolin dude, I've got a lot of time for your comments. But this really sounds like it's going to be in the same mould as DOA, as other US productions with a Asian slant.

I will definitely watch this at some point but I would be surprised if this turned out to be anything less than mediocre.

Here here!

After watching the trailer it was exactly what I thought it would be on KFSamurai's review.

And I thought Dawn of the Dead sucked (it had its moments), and liked 300 enough, at least the fight scenes, the rest of the movie is a throw away.

According to this article, not many folks care for this film.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/dailybeast/20110328/ts_dailybeast/13178_suckerpunchwhyfanboyshaveturnedonzacksnyder_ 1

Apparently a lot of people aren't buying into the premise of the story. I don't see the problem but maybe I'm just not that deep. To my knowledge this is Snyder's first attempt at an original story.

****SPOILERS**** (sort of)

You have the "events" (the asylum); the "subconscious events" (the brothel/burlesque scenario); and then the "sub-subconscious events" (the action scenarios). It kind of works but seems far-fetched but again....this mainly takes place in the realm of the subconscious. The characters take on different personae in order to achieve their goals or to be depicted in other lights. Like I said, I found it to be entertaining.....but that's me.

Everybody makes a bomb. This is most likely Snyder's (IMO). I doubt there will be a sequel.

(Other folks I've spoken with who've seen this agree that it's definitely one to take in on the big screen and would probably be viewed less enjoyably at home.)
