Have you folks heard about this? Just stumbled across the recent news story, and couldn't see mention of it on the board - point me in the right direction if I've overlooked a thread... This is nuts.

Leaving a twelve page letter to daughter's idol Andy Lau, Yang Qingji ended his 68 years long life in Hong Kong on March 26 after his daughter attends an activity with her idol Andy Lau.

Yang Li-juan (R) finally got the chance to meet Hong Kong star Andy Lau. [Xmnext.com]

Yang's daughter Yang Lijuan is a 28-year-old girl from northwestern China's Gansu province. After the first time she dreamed of Andy 13 years ago, she became a huge fan of him. Since then, she quitted school and spent all the time thinking of her idol. All she wants is to meet Andy Lau and tell him how she loves him.

To support daughter's dream, Yang Qingji and his wife spent up every penny of their savings. They sold the only house they had in Lanzhou City. Yang even decided to sell one of his kidneys to a local hospital, but he was refused because it's illegal. However, they never had chance to meet or talk to Andy. Several days ago, the family entered Hong Kong for the third time. With the help of Andy's fans club, Yang Lijuan finally had an opportunity to attend Andy's birthday activity with hundreds of his fans on March 25. To her disappointment, she only got few minutes to take picture with Andy instead of having a conversation with him. Her life long dream did not come true.

Being unacceptable to this result, Yang Qingji wrote a letter blaming Andy's coldness to his daughter and drowned himself in despair after daughter and wife fell in sleep. In his letter, he thought it was Andy's responsibility to arrange a private meet with his daughter, even for five minutes.

Yang Lijuan and her mother were in deep sorrow after Yang's death. Yang Lijuan showed her regret of loving Andy Lau for so many years to reporters. But she still insisted that Andy should meet her again, otherwise her father's death was meaningless. She took Andy as the root cause of her father's death. Although critics think the deficiency of courage to face the reality after fulfilling years' dream is the real reason of the tragedy.

Andy Lau responds through his agency on March 28 that he has fulfilled Miss Yang's hope of meeting on the birthday activity. Feeling astonished and disappointed, he hopes Miss Yang can go back to hometown and start her own life. He refuses to meet her any more.

Leaving father's dead body in Hong Kong, Yang Lijuan and her mother went back to Lanzhou on March 28 without making it clear what to do next.

And now after that apparently this news story has popped up:

Film planned on Andy Lau's crazy fan
4/4/2007 10:13

A star chaser-turned-director has announced his plan to make a thought-provoking film based on Hong Kong veteran Andy Lau's obsessive fan, Yang Lijuan.
Yang Lijuan hit the headlines last week after her 68-year-old father Yang Qinji ended his life by jumping into the sea in Hong Kong, leaving a posthumous letter pleading with Andy Lau to meet his obsessed daughter privately.

Director Chen Tianxing said the news struck a chord with him, and he felt a great need to make a film, showing such fans to appreciate their icons in healthy way.

A former farmer in Luzhou, southwestern China's Sichuan province, Chen Tianxing has worked hard on a career as a director-cum-martial arts actor - earning achievements which he attributes his long-time craze for the late action-movie star Bruce Lee.

Chen Tianxing said his upcoming film will focus on "narrating" instead of "commenting," and leave space for the audience to think over the issue themselves.

He also plans to donate all earnings from the screening to Yang Lijuan and her widowed mother.

Chen Tianxing has reportedly contacted Yang Lijuan for possible collaboration, but the reply described her as "too sad for things like this."

This is some crazy stuff - anyone know this director/actor, or any films he's done?

Anyhoo... craziness...

Sounds more like a movie that Wong Jing should make. :)

Or a movie Ringo Lam would make starring Anthony Wong.

Thats crazy, you hear so much of this going on in Hollywood and would never expect it from Hong Kong... well maybe. The last I heard of something like this happening was the Jackie Chan incident where the japanese girl committed suicide, and that was a long time ago.

I was just about to post that lol:rollin

Thought the Anthony Wong one sounds even more appealing, but it needs Herman Yau directing it.

What a terrible burden to put on Andy Lau. From what I gather the man is very good to his fans and because he doesn't spend personal time with everyone some loser commits suicide. These obsessives need to get a bloody grip!

Still we now need a trifecta of Wong Jing, Herman Yau, and Anthony Wong to make a film.

I was just about to post that lol

Great minds think alike. :)

Cecilia Cheung could play the girl; Stephen Chow could play Andy Lau; and Eric Tsang could play the father. Cheng Pei Pei could play the mother, and the film would feature a comedic martial arts showdown at the end between with Chow going up against Cheung and Cheng. If Cheung's not available, get one of the Twins.

Eric Kot :P? Typically from Wong Jing, we'll probably get a tri-logy!

But yeah, that's pretty insane.

From the way I see it, it's all right to be a fan and maybe meet them for a handshake/photo, few questions and telling them how much you're a fan. You can like them, maybe have a soft spot (just for fun or whatever), but nothing as serious as complete obsession - only something nice to remember and to tell family/friends of what you've done.

The problem is, fans think they know these people, when infact, they simply don't. You'll find that all they're doing is acting (on AND off-screen) to keep their appeal. It's obviously to gain fame/fortune (don't get me wrong, not everyone acts for either), but people usually fall for it and take things too seriously. That's what leads to situations as this. Remember the result of JC's marriage and 'Take That' splitting? Worse happens, threats are made - people are even killed (John Lennon)! These idiots need to get a grip.

I wonder how poor Andy had to deal with such an awkward dialema:\ . I suppose he had to refuse meeting her again, as it would have probably made things worse (and may have encouraged others to attempt the same thing), as opposed to leaving things as they are, and for Yang to try and forget. It's one of the prices you pay for being famous. For all we know, he may have met Yang in secret and tried to reason with her or something.

Not going to go deep into it, but people should be happy in life :) .

Yes, obsessive fans have a screw loose and can't seperate reality from fantasy, that's why tragidies like this happen. They are just human beings like the rest of us but some people just don't understand that.
