Wonder why ole Ricky doesn't hang out on this site, reckon he's scared people here might know more than him on the Kung Fu genre? ;)

Seems Ravashing Ric is one of those dudes who likes to be tied up and whipped, maybe that's why he gets off on all the beatings in Kung Fu flicks too. 8)

Maybe the training scenes in old kung fu movies influenced his porno directing.

Has anyone here read Ric Meyer's book Bruce Lee to the Ninjas? Don't get me wrong, the book was full of mistakes and Ric Meyerisms. However, if I hadn't been handed that book when I was like 15, I likely never would've gotten into these movies. So yes, I have something to thank Ric Meyer's for, as ridiculous as that sounds, and his book was very influential to me. But yeah, I have no respect for the guy whatsoever....and Ric....your beard is stupid!

Markgway
02-26-2007, 02:10 PM
According to Linn, that book's good parts were written by the co-authors. So no need to thank Ric. ;)

Amy Harlib popped up on a forum a few years ago pissed off that Meyers was taking her name off the cover of the new edition. In a nutshell, in the original book she wrote all the info about Japanese samurai films and kung fu history. The Palmers wrote all the info in the back about what films to watch and not watch. Ric wrote about the Shaw Brothers and Bruce Lee. That's around 40% of the book I'd guess. In hindsight, it makes perfect sense, as those are Meyers' bread and butter more or less.

I do own that book under it's re-released title Great Martial Arts Movies. It was a good book for it's time and I enjoyed reading it although as was said Ric wasn't the sole person involved in creating it. He has promoted the genre I love which I do give him credit for, he just tells so many mistruths and lies that pisses the more knowlegable fans off. Unknowing people read or hear some of the crap he tells and actually thinks it's true. He should do his homework if he wants to be a so-called authority on the genre because he's big in the media and reaches quite a large audience here in the US. He's pulled the wool over alot of people's eyes. Sometimes I wonder if he's really as big a fan of these movies as he makes out to be.

I remember following those lists until a realized that a couple of years later after reading their Enc. of Martial Arts Movies (a book that Meyers more or less co-opted), that the Palmers hated Chen Sing,Jimmy Wang Yu, and any basher. Once I started hunting down the bad ones, I started like them quite a bit. These don't belong on there IMO for various reasons:

3 The Bloody Fight
4 The Bloody Fists
5 Duel of the Iron Fist
8 Fight For Survival
9 The Fists of Vengeance
11 The Ghostly Face
12 The Invincible (Jimmy Wang Yu)
13 The Invincible (Swift Shaolin Boxer)
14 Japanese Connection
15 The King Boxer (not Shaw Brothers)
20 Seven Blows of the Dragon
21 Shaolin Death Squad
23 Streetgangs of Hong Kong AKA The Deliquent

Hey Linn, any ideas as to how to find a copy of that book (the Encyclopedia of Martial Arts Movies)? It's notoriously hard to find and SUPER expensive when it does show up.
I helped the Palmers compile titles/films for the book (mostly Shaw stuff) and they were kind enough to acknowledge me in print, but I never pressed the issue about getting a promo copy and probably should have.
Seemed like a potentially good reference book.

Try getting it through Inter Library Loan. Thats how I got it when I was in college for research.

The book was rereleased just a year or so ago, but it was NOT updated except it has a cover. There's a LOT of screwed up info, mainly on Shaw Brothers films. Gee, wonder why that is? But it is interesting for it's listings of films. The problem finding it now, is they only have it listed under Ric's name, when he wrote perhaps 20%-30% of the material. Here's a current link to the cheapest price on the web, after that, it's BarnesandNoble.com. $51-$55 dollars is a GREAT price for this book, as I know some people who have paid upwards of $120. I'll say it again though, it is NOT the most correct book in the universe.

Enc. of Martial Arts Movies (http://www.amazon.com/Encyclopedia-Martial-Arts-Movies/dp/0810841606/sr=1-2/qid=1172592074/ref=pd_bbs_2/002-0131734-6010429?ie=UTF8&s=books)

Amazon seems the way to go. I had it on backorder with the publisher for over a year and finally gave up. Then one day it was on Amazon and I snapped it up for $45.

Thanks for that link, I definately want to get that book to go along with Great Martial Arts Movies and Videohound's Dragon which are not entirely accurate either. Another book I have that I've seen the most mistakes in is Asian Cult Cinema by Thomas Weisser, be warned to stay away from that book.

And THAT is an understatement. It's very clear that Weisser watched only a handful of the films he wrote about. The rest was largely guesswork. Combined with the info about his Japanese books, I certainly don't trust the guy as a writer by any stretch.

Aha! The classic Asian Trash Cinema book by Weisser - I've been using that as a reference for years! Here's one of my favourite completely accurate reviews from it:

------------------------------------------------------------

CRIPPLED HEROES:
MORTAL COMBAT (1983)
director: Chan Cheng

Kou Chu as the blind warrior. Lo Wang is the deaf-mute fighter. Lu Fang plays the no-armed kickboxer. Sun Chen is the legless female boxer. And Chan Cheng (yes, the director) is unbearable as the village idiot. They all band together, using deadly tiger-style kung fu, to fight evil Tin Tan Wong in this chop-sockey hybrid.

------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, nice review.

Ha, there's no way in hell he ever watched that movie. Sun Chien as the legless female boxer? I'm sure Sun really appreciates being called that! And he can't even tell Chiang Sheng from Chang Cheh. And a *1/2 rating my ass!!! I believe we have found a guy worser than even Ric......:rolleyes

Is that from that Asian Cult Cinema book? That guy gives Iron Monkey(93) a 2/4, and then he gives Dr. Lamb a 4/4. I had that book for about a year and it almost ruined my life!

Yes sir, that's the infamous book. Ole Weisser probably has never even seen Iron Monkey! :\

Worst book of all time. I think he gave Jackie chan's The Prisoner a perfect 4/4. Same with Ninja the Final Duel. But good kung fu movies, he literally knows nothing.

I bought that ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MARTIAL ARTS MOVIES when it first came out. It does have many mistakes like mentioning one title from the late 70s or 80s (don't remember the name) being the first to use split screen even though the split screen process was used as early as SHAOLIN MARTIAL ARTS from 74.

IRON FINGERS OF DEATH was listed as a 1975 production, etc. Someone who knows the Palmers told me they thought Phillip Ko and Kao Fei were two different people(!).

The book has more title listings than actual movie reviews and was NOT worth the $60.00 I paid for it back in 95.

The Weisser book is even worse and I think has an intro by Oliver Stone who is a fan. I used to buy their ASIAN TRASH CINEMA/ASIAN CULT CINEMA digest as it was the only other monthly book I could find.

This was the digest that had that famous Lo Mang interview where Lo literally said nothing about his career claiming to not remember anything. The interviewer then asked where the other members were so he could take them all out drinking. Lo responded by saying "You wouldn't be able to handle it."

Ric Meyers had his own column in their but their was a preponderance of Roman Porn or Pinku Eiga films which are a favorite of Weisser and his japanese wife. These are movies where the women are tied up in elaborate fashion, tortured and raped and are apparently big business in Japan. Nikkatsu studios made big money off producing these.

The digest used to have nude photos on the back covers for a long time and apparently they got a lot of heat over it and started having nude pictorials on the inside instead.

I think Weisser alienated a lot of the people who bought the digest when a fan wrote in asking why he didn't have more HK movie notices and reviews. His response was that he wrote about things HE wanted to see(!)

I haven't seen another issue in quite some time so they may have went belly up, but in the later issues under the ASIAN CULT name, the reviews got more accurate. Oliver Stone wrote articles in there, too sometimes.
