But I remember once, at my home in Miami, I believe it was in ’96 or’97, Van Damme was there with Seagal, Willis, Schwarzenegger, Shaquille O’Neal, Don Johnson and Madonna… it was a heck of a party. Van Damme was tired of Seagal saying he could kick his ass and went right up to him and offered him the chance to step outside so he could wipe the floor with him, or should I say wipe the backyard with him. Seagal made some excuse and left. His destination was some Ocean Drive nightclub in Miami. Van Damme, who was completely berserk, tracked him down and again offered him a fight, and again Seagal pulled a Houdini. Who would win? I have to say I believe Van Damme was just too strong and Seagal wanted no part of it. That’s just my opinion.

Maybe Seagal was being the bigger man so to speak? What with him being a peaceful Buddhist and all. I know Seagal is chunky as hell now but back in 96/97 I think he could've done some Van Damage to the Belgian. I mean, I like many of Van Damme's movies, but isn't this the guy who had to be rescued from a bar fight by Mickey Rourke?

If Seagal was being the bigger man, he wouldn't be telling Jean Claude Van Damme he could kick his ass to begin with. So there goes that scenario down out the window. Now I know JCVD has gotten his ass kicked drunk multiple time, but I trust Stallone's assessment of the situation: Seagal ran away from JCVD :lol

Well, assuming that's actually true.
Would make an interesting duel.
But we all know Chuck Norris could kick both their asses.

I don't think there has ever been any doubts regarding the legitimacy of Seagal's skills. After watching Top Fighter I think there might even be something to JCVD.

Has anyone seen the writeup (on the web), where a stuntman/martial artist, also called Seagal's bluff while on the set?

Seagal is a legitimate master of Aikido but I've often wondered how well that art would hold up in a real life fight. I admit to having never studied the art so don't want to discredit Aikido since I have no experience in it. Just from my observations though it looks like most of the time it's practiced with a complying partner who "goes along with it" so to speak. It looks like it would be hard to apply against an aggressive and fully resistent attacker. Grappling arts like Brazilian JiuJitsu, Japanese Judo and even wrestling seem to be alot more practical and are practiced against a fully resisting opponent. Now that's not to say Van Damme is a great fighter either, he is a bodybuilder and works out with weights to go along with his Karate so he is probably strong and in shape. But this guy is no way in the league of someone like Don Wilson who has fought some of the meanest animals in kickboxing history with the record to prove it. On screen though, I think Claude looks alot better with his techniques than Don does. It's just my opinion that Van Damme could make his techniques work better in a real brawl than Seagal could.
I also have to agree with Mark in that in Chuck's prime he could have kicked both their asses. :b

Van Damme strikes me as a ballet dancer. Maybe he could pirouette his way around Seagal, but as soon as he threw a punch or a kick, Seagal would take him down, no sweat.
I don't think Aikido was meant to be a fighting martial art. It doesn't have belt grades and I don't recall it having fighting tournaments. It's more about finding inner peace, and the actual physical component is defensive in nature, hence no punching or kicking katas.
I doubt Seagal has stuck with just aikido. He's probably got some karate or jiujitsu in his repertoire.

Claude did in fact study Ballet when he was younger and gives it credit for his great flexibility. He seems to be in alot better shape than Steven who has gotten to resemble Humpty Dumpty in the last several years. Your probably right that Steven has studied other arts besides Aikido, he uses alot of strikes in his movies that probably aren't found in that art.

Van Damme discusses his near fight with Steven Seagal at the home of Sylvester Stallone in 1997, also does his best Sly impersonation

Chuck Norris in his prime was the real deal---he wouldn't have had much trouble with either of them, IMO. In fact, he wouldn't have had much trouble with Bruce, either. (KyFi puts his hands up to ward off the barrage of rotten tomatoes thrown at him by other forum members) :D

Lol... I'm sure Stallone would be flattered by that impersonation.

I'm waiting for someone to make an animated gif out of that but I guess it's not the same without the audio. Van Damme is quite the character.

I think Van Damme would win if it was stand up. Akido is a great style but your opponent has to be pretty close in order for you to do anything. Van Damme has a kickboxing style. So Van Damme for sure

If you're goal is to strike a person, then you have to get "pretty close" to them. :l

Actually, someone could rip a gif and the audio and then upload it onto YTMND.
It doesn't surprise me Seagal hid from Van Damme especially considering the infamous incident with Gene LeBelle on the set of Under Siege.

Seagal was being too rough with the stuntmen and Lebell confronted him about it. They argued and it ended with Seagal saying something to the extent he couldn't be choked out due to his Aikido training. So Lebell took him up on the challenge. On the first attempt, Seagal stopped him saying he was still preparing. So they did it again. Well, Lebell choked him out and made him lose control of his bodily functions. A lawsuit followed and was settled out of court to hide the humiliation.
So long story short, Lebell made Seagal shat his pants. The End.

That doesn't surprise me one bit. "Judo" Gene Le Bell is a grappling expert with alot more experience then Seagal. He was on an episode of Ironside in the late 60's with Bruce Lee.
