just watched this movie this afternoon. big shoutout to Yakuza954 for the tip. i walked in with relatively low expectations, and i was not surprised to find out that the film was pretty much EXACTLY what i expected. allow me to elaborate.

this movie has its strengths, and its weaknesses...but i'll talk about the strengths for now. the cinematography and art direction for this film is generally very good...they went all out with the sets and locations...film is definetely pretty to look at (we're not talkin about Hero, but u kno what i mean lol). Wilson Yip did a fine job directing the movie, and there are a some good cinematic touches in there, and some cool looking shots. however, its unfortnate the same cannot be sed for the plot. it wasnt as horrible as the reviews ive read alluded to, but lets just say i was expecting more in the way of story. the film ends up playing like an old school kung fu movie at its core..which i guess isnt a bad thing depending on what u look for in movies. however, i dont kno if i should blame the writers, or the original comic book, since i havent read it b4. so i suppose i'll let that slide. the acting was very forgettable...altho i gotta say that my face lit up seeing Chen Kuan Tai in there!! i was hoping he would monkey-kung fu somebody's ass haha. he plays a crime boss. donnie yen felt very uncomfortable in his role and out of place in many ways...i mean, im glad he was there since he was one of the only real martial artists in the movie, but he was pretty unconvincing in his role if u ask me. the forgettable dialogue didnt help either. many of the characters were very underdeveloped, and the romantic subplots didnt quite hit. yuen wah's character was really the only one that i felt for. overall, i cant say the plot/dialogue/acting is anything higher than subpar.

now lets get to the action, cuz i know thats what most ppl really care about. Donnie Yen went on record to say that the action is "groundbreaking", and its this and its that....meh. one thing that ive always b*tched about is not Donnie's choreography, but how he shoots his action. Twins Effect was the first donnie choreography i saw that actually impressed me...to this day i still think its some of his best choreography work. expectations were insanely high after SPL, which definetely featured donnies best action. didnt like how some of it was shot, but it was good enuff for me. the action took a step back to me at least. thats not to say the action was bad, it wasnt. donnie went back to his old tricks with the ridiculous close ups (which hinder lots of the action) and flailing arms for many of the fights. because of some of the sketchy camerawork, some of the action was hard to follow. but there were still many great moments in there. Nick Tse and his double has a great fight in the beginning of the movie which is straight kicking. well shot too. next fight features a huge melee battle with donnie and shawn yue, which was ok at best. there was a really cool fight with yuen wah (he still moves great for his age) and the villain, which looked pretty good overall. donnie takes on some dudes with a staff which is probably the best fight in the movie. wide shots and good choreography & speed. on a side note, the villain had some great moves. finale features a solid 2 on 1 battle leading to a decent climactic showdown, but much of the action in this movie felt like Dragonball Z. overall, i found nothing groundbreaking about the action. solid, good action, but very few eyebrow raising moments. i liked the action in House of Fury more...i only use HoF as a comparison cuz its the best popstar movie ive seen, action wise. i thought the action in Twins Effect was more fun and enjoyable. but the action in DTG isnt bad, its good.

overall, i found this movie to be nothing more than average. i knew walking in that this movie wouldnt meet the hype, and it didnt. plot was subpar, action was solid..but all things considered, i felt disappointed, especially after seeing what Wilson Yip is capable of. i recommend comic book fans to check it out, its worth a watch, but i cant say that this movie really impressed me on any front...maybe if Chen Kuan Tai got to use his monkey fist lol....

6.5 out of 10 - about average.

thanx for reading.

Well I would have given HoF a 7.5 because I thought it was an enjoyable popcorn film with some nice twists and some good new wave styled fights. So I would assume I'll prob give DTG about the same. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for the review! I'm excited to see this movie. I'm a huge Donnie Yen fan but I'm not in denial that his movies are overall hit or miss, and sadly mostly miss...:rolleyes

I generally agree with Chen Zhen's review, though I don't have any problem with how Donnie Yen shoots his action. I enjoyed it a lot here, though its not as good as SPL, and when they tried to intercut it with CGI it got annoying. Speaking of the CGI, thats the worse thing about the movie-- its on par with other bad HK examples like Storm Riders and detracts from the film more then it helps it. Operation Scorpio still holds the title as the best HK-style comic book movie. House of Fury was also a big dissapointment as Stephen Fung had hyped it up as the next big thing. He even said that he was watching a bunch of old-school movies in preparation so House of Fury could be a homage to them. The final result was anything but. I believe YWP was a last-second surprise addition to the film crew and his choreography ended up being the only saving grace.

agree 100% there...YWP took a potentially bad film and made it enjoyable with his quality choreography. i'd watch HoF b4 i watch Dragon Tiger Gate again.

Hardly any good movies come out of HK anymore. I'm passed the point of being disappointed.

It's funny, how everybody looks at the action. I've watched two fights scenes so far and I thought they SUCKED. I'm not a big fan of "one-against-many" fights and the openning fight and the restaurant brawl didn't do it for me. The restaurant fight reminded me of Legend of the Wolf - the same mess of Donnie's hands flying all over and slow-mo shots of wire-enchanced bodies crashing through the walls. Puh-leese!
Then Donnie's double doing flips in the hallway...The whole thing looked like it was some left-over footage from Matrix. Just horrible!
The over shot camera trick was done b4, I can name Kill Bill and Minority Report as examples.
The ONLY thing that was nice and cool - The slo-mo shot of Shawn Yue flying between the bodies of the bad guys.
...I don't think I even want to re-watch these scenes again. I'm SO dissapointed so far!...
CRAP! CRAP! CRAP! I never thought I'd say this, but I rather watch Arahan again.
Of all the MA films made in HK in the last two years this one gotta be the worst. "Groundbreaking stuff" Ha-ha! Donnie should be a comedian
May be, if I were 15 years old, I would like that kind of fantasy fighting. I guess now "I'm too old for this @#%$"

it was disappointing, but i didnt think it was THAT bad overall...there were still a few good fights...but defientely far from groundbreakign i'll agree.

im being led to believe SPL was a fluke...

I thought the opening fight was the best, though it doesn't mean much. I started to like donnie's final fight at first, but then it turned into a totally comic-style crap with broken walls, flying through the air and so on.
I'm not talking about the movie - I understand it's comic-based, I'm just dissapointed by the fights. I didn't like the way they were shot, and choreography wasn't that great either.
As for non-MA actors - look at HoF. YWP and the cast did a much better work, than Donnie, Shawn and Nick

nobody does it better than YWP when it comes to non martial artists. as my review stated, i definetely prefer House of Fury over it. the choreography was more creative and it was shot much better. i still enjoyed DTG partially, but i have to say that i was more overcome with disappointment. my problem with donnie's action has never really been the choreography...its been how its shot, and how donnie bigs himself up as a choreography legend or somethin. have u seen Twins Effect? donnie shouldve shot DTG like that, then it woulda been much better.

Twins Effect>DTG action wise IMO. to this day, i still think TE and SPL are donnies only 2 movies with "good" choreography. everything else he's done has been no better than OK IMO. hes still great onscreen tho.

I agree on TE. That alley fight with a vampire was the best piece of choreograpy Donnie's ever done.
Can't forget Donnie's comments on Tony Jaa's films. Like, "it's nothing new and was done before, but my new film TDG will feature some groundbreaking action". Meanwhile, TYG had really groundbreaking( and bone breaking) fight, not to mention one long shot scene. What ground did TDG break?! Except for those fake walls and pillars
