Yes, that's the news I just heard.
Richard Hopkins of Phillywood Entertainment and personal friend of Lo Mang has announced that the Venom muscleman will be coming to the City of Brotherly Love this August. He will be given a lifetime achievement award for his work in Asian cinema. Richard said the dates and the event location are still being worked out and he is seeking sponsors or investors who would like to participate in this event.

I'm just 75 miles from Philly, so I will definitely be there. I hope some of my fellow KFF members can make the trip this summer. It will be a blast to finally meet the Toad in person.

That's cool. Looking forward to seeing you guys there. There must be a ton of collectors in the NYC/ tri-state area that can hopefully make it. A few NY/NJ posters off the top of my head are: TheManInWhite, Thekfc, ShaofuSage, Harlem Shaw?, Ozzieny, rindge, VenomsFan.
I hope some long-time posters from other necks of the woods can make it as well. If we ever needed an excuse to get together, then I can't think of a better one. We'll have ourselves a lil' KFF party. :D

There will be a press release on the Fansite in the next week or so. Sounds good VFan. I mentioned to Richard that I plan to build a page on my site to further spread the word for this event as well. This is a golden opportunity to show LM there's a huge fanbase for these films and hopefully he will, in turn, spread the news once he returns to Hong Kong. If we have a good turn out, perhaps this can be the catalyst for even large venues down the road. I hope you can make it down from Rochester.
Glad to hear HShaw and others are on board. Spread the word folks. Let's show 'em that KFF rocks the world.
Oh, and it sounds like Ian is buying the first round? Nothing compliments a kung fu fest better than plenty of wine. Bring your credit cards boys! ;)

Can you tell more about this award? Is it some kind of fan award?

Hello All,
Lo Mang will be coming to Philly this coming August, 2007.
The dates and location are still being worked out.
Lo Mang will be coming to Philly to receive a lifetime achievement award for his work in the Asian cinema industry.
This award will be given to him to thank him for his contribution to the Martial arts world of cinema and how many fans and martial artist he has touched during his legendary career.
Now there will also be a martial arts film expo. I'm hoping to get enough film people and martial artist from the movies there as possible.
Now the award ceremony will be only for those that reserve
in advance because there will be limited seating at tables.
This will be a black tie event.
Media coverage and other coverage as well.
The Dallas Mavericks basketball team did a tribute to the
Venoms called 5 Mavericks Venoms which is on youtube.com.
There front office is sending us the video to show at the
award ceremony.
Trust me people Philly will be the place to be in August 2007.
This will be a historic event, don't miss the boat on this one.
You can see a photo of Lo Mang and myself at
myspace.com/105655396
Lo Mang is very excited about this event.
Long live the Venoms.

Richard,
When will tickets become available?
Is this event open to the public or by invitation only?
Will there be a Photo and autograph Opportunity?

Thanks for that additional info, Richard. I saw those two clips you mentioned and appreciate any fan made media that supports the Venoms. Outside of Mavericks' fans though, I'm not sure how much impact this video will create. Cutting video to a pre-established track is basic Video 101. I'm sure there will many 'non fans' attending this event and while a MTV/ESPN clip might entertain the masses for a brief moment, might I suggest something that is slightly more educational?
The fan made documentary by VFan would not only entertain but also enlighten many on the lore of the Venoms. I believe this doc would leave them with something much more than they could ever get from an NBA highlight reel. I don't know the legalities of showing such a production at this venue but it might be something to look into. Food for thought...
rickhop
02-13-2007, 10:14 PM
Yes,
The ceremony is by reservation only and seating will be limited because of media.
This is also a banquet which is covered by the reservation.
The first four tables are for vips only.
This award banquet will be $120.00
Any more info that you might need please contact me.

Rickhop be patient with releasing the info. Alot of us, rightfully so are very anxious. You guys be patient too, there are different costs to this thing. That's why it's better to wait for a written and approved press release as opposed to going on everything you see in a forum post.
teako I see you! And you know I'm there.

Hmm, how much for bleacher seats? :\
But seriously, any info you can provide for the average fan is most welcome: photo ops, autograph sessions, etc. (as monk sante mentioned.)
I understand there are financial needs to be met and planning such an event can be costly but please keep in mind the man on the street. These are the individuals who have supported these films for 10-20-30 years.
As many an actor has stated: "If it weren't for the fans, I would've been out of work a long time ago."

I really hope there will be some cheaper seats available for us fans, otherwise this will be very dissapointing.
Last year I was lucky enough to meet the master killer himself....Gordon Liu and guess what the cost was.....$20.00. Yup, lets see what I got out of it....photos, autograph, Video, kung fu demo by the Beijing Wu Shu team, Hung Gar Form performed by Gordon himself and a wonderful conversation with him as well. It would be nice to meet Lo Mang under these same circumstances.:rolleyes

The people have spoken. $120 is pricey and lets face it not many people outside of our cult following know who the heck this guy is. I'm not even a big venoms fan, but for the right price (which is not 120) myself and I bet many others would make the trek to Philly.
Are you open to kicking around ideas on how to make this more affordable for others? Initial interest seems to be quite high. With the right pricing I'd bet you would sell the house out!!!
Good luck!

That wasn't my decision. I believe this can be petitioned? Richard is just aware of his who is in his circle. Drop him an email on what you think.
The good things about forum posts is you can get direct feedback from us fans. Any other suggestions?
teako170
02-15-2007, 03:59 PM
Thanks for the release, VFan.
I can understand the reasoning behind choosing Ric Myers -- as it's the same reason why he's the so-called "voice" for these films. That being, he's a safe bet; his name is known. Unfortunately, that's why there's so much garbage in the cinema and on TV. People don't like risks and stick with what they know.
I think Linn would be a great choice. A breath of fresh air. A man of the people, the fans. Ric is more, a man of the media. (No disrespect to Ric.)
The KFF forum is one of the best places on the net to get the perspective of the true fans of this genre. I just hope Richard is listening. The last thing I want to see at this venue is some air-headed news journalist from KYW-3 interviewing Lo Mang on the six o'clock news asking questions like... "So are you like the new Jackie Chan?" or "Didn't I see you in Crouching Tiger?"
I hope all can continue to offer positive feedback and that this event will be a true success - for all.

VF,
First off I don't want you to think that I blame you in any way. I really appreciate all the info you have been giving to us and I really love your doc. Honestly I think I will drop a line. I think honestly getting the RZA or one of the main Wu-Tang guys would be a better chocie as an emcee because even as wrong headed as it may seem (Wu Tang did lead to a rise in bad DVDs), Wu-Tang has a special connection with FDV and it would make a perfect choice and bring extra media attention. Just make sure to give him notes on Lo Mang and I think he could do a great job. Though first pic would be Linn :) .
Still I just want to be clear I apprecaite your work VF!

No offense taken. Give the feedback, even if it's not what people want to hear. Your input is appreciated as well, too bad most people just read and don't post. Feedback is a powerful thing especially when it comes from those supporting a Fandom for, as teako pointed out, for 10-20-30 years! It's gotta matter.

You are right about that. Didn't the rZa host a Tony Jaa appearance for Ong Bak in NYC? Defnitely some connections can be made if you know what I mean.
Just make sure to give him notes on Lo Mang and I think he could do a great job.
What did you have in mind?
With the right people and right planning, this could be a great sign of things to come for Kung Fu Fandom.

Yep he was involved in the promotion of Ong Bak in TV ads and appearnces and did the score for the Protector. Some great connections could result from that.
What did you have in mind?
Basic facts and career info. Just make sure the info is fact checked and I bet Rza could work fine with that in mcing an event. For Ric Meyers its to make sure he is up to date and doesn't make stuff up like the time he told people that Lar Kar Leung had died of cancer in the 90s.

I mean how often do we have an opportunity to meet a Shaw Brothers movie star?
I was able to meet Cheng Pei Pei at UCLA during the first Heroic grace Series. After I asked her, she said yes, she is friends w/ Jimmy Wang Yu. I took a picture w/ her also. A "particular" director, who's worked w/ Uma Thurman before, was there who spoke w/ CPP near the aisle. This was during a double feature of "Come Drink with Me" and "Golden Swallow". "GS" seems to be a little bit better than "CDwM", IMO.
This might sound a little bit embarrassing, but Phoenix Chinese Satellite TV decided to interview me there at that first Heroic G Series. One of the things that I said was that I didn't really like Ang Lee's "CTHD". I hope that doesn't bother you if your opinion about "CTHD" is different than mine.

the more people with information the better IMO
maybe different guest speakers could have different times to speak if you are showing documentaries or different films. maybe a different guest speaker to introduce different films
if you are using names to bring in a crowd try to bring in as much people as your budget allows.
each speaker will bring a different crowd so dont paint yourself in a corner by limiting yourself to one guest speaker if the RZA or QT are down for doing it free why not? alot of celebs are into kung fu even samuel jackson has a large collection.
my point is explore as much options as you can and yeah linn is a must

Quick question from Rick (who's busy doing alot of legwork in his neck of the woods). Maybe the gang here at KungFuFandom can answer this one...
"Hello Gang,
Does anyone know any martial arts video stores in New York City? I use to go to NYC years ago to find videos but don't know if they are still in the same locations. I wanted to drop off posters to them of the event coming up with Lo Mang. Anyone out there that knows of some please let me know."

There's one I know of in Chinatown. Don't remember the name exactly, it was something like digital discs or media or something. It's on one of the main strips, Canal St. maybe. They have a lot of the Celestials and new releases from China. Hope this isn't too vague, I haven't been there in a couple years.
By the way, is anybody from the midwest driving out there. I'm in Kansas City and am looking to hitch a ride.

Well, in chinatown NY, one of the main spots is Lai Ying Music which is on Bowery between Canal and Hester.
It's right next door to where the Music Palace Theater USED to be.
Anyway, he should ask for Michelle or Paul at the video counter and they should be able to assist him.

Is Ric Myers for real? What has he ever done for martial arts films? Also i heard he is an ex porn
star LOL is that true? I heard it here on Kung Fu Fandom. I tried to do a search for him on gogle
but i didnt come up with much besides a guy who looks like well... a greasy exporn star.
He has a website on myspace another site ive never been to. I thought that site was for little

What has this person ever done for Asian Cinema i looked on his ''MYSPACE'' lol and all i saw was that
he liked some things but hardly any of it had to do with martial arts films. I vote for Linn too we need
a fresh face up there.
I guess if anyone ever wanted to really ask Ric Myers why - then all they would have to do is login to
that site and leave him a message because i saw the last time he logged in was yesterday.

first off, I want to thank everyone for their vote of confidence. I've purposely NOT posted on this thread because, while I'm not a fan of Ric, I do understand that the people running this wanted to go with someone they know. I get that and I understand, and I hope you will too. While I like to think I've done a bit for the genre, Ric is someone they've known for a long time. I don't want to make things too awkward for the people running this, by fans constantly bringing up my name to MC or anything else. They're not going to ask Ric to do it and then just take it away, nor do I think they should. But thank you all for thinking of me and that said...
because of all your e-mails and messages on this and other forums, Richard contacted me and asked me if I'd be able to come. He said he had been barraged with notes about getting me from all over. It seemed everyone he talked to asked if he had contacted me, even people helping with the event. To say this is flattering is an understatement. Like on this thread, I truly appreciate everyone putting my name out there. As of right now, there's about an 80% chance of me coming. The 20% is simply me being cautious. I want to stress that it's because of you guys, and folks from all over the world really, that I'm making every effort to attend. I look forward to seeing as many of you as I can and promise at least one or two BIG announcements that I hope can be let out of the bag by that time. If we can set up a Chinese dinner or something somewhere in Philly for all the kung fu fandom folks, I'd be up to that as well.

Awesome, hopefully you will be able to be Commentator on some Martial Movie one day as well.
Like i had mentioned before i feel that you would do a good Job on "Human Lanterns"...
Because of your cult horror / kung fu background.
If you could choose any movie to comment on which one would it be Linn? If you ask me
there is just too much that is not known about kung fu movies that i feel we are better off with
at least some commentary on around %40 of the films.
I dont see why companies do not do it. I guess there are not so many people who can do it in the

Ok I will chime in here and just say that he has been a private student of Lo Meng for many years now. And the reason for his listing Ric Meyers inititally is because they all fall in the same circle. Richard's relationship with Lo Meng is the defining factor for this event. Period!
Linn1, you have support beyond your wildest imagination. I understand your 20%, but I must say the 80% is very encouraging. Such an event has never been in place before this down the line. Ah yes, all is coming to plan. Rick (not Meyers) is really putting a lot of effort into this and financing the whole enchilada himself. This is very goods news and I would also like to thank all kung fu Fandom members for their vote of confidence in our respectable and knowledgeable Senior Moderator Linn Hayes.
I also believe that this will be a great opportunity to get a group photo of all the Fandom members in attendance plus some group photos of Lo Mang and the Fandom members.Individual shots if possible with The Venom will be most welcome.
These pictures can be posted here for those of us unfortunate to be on the other side of the Pacific and elsewhere.I am also kindly making a request to Linn to share the experience with us in a thread like " An Audience With Tarantino " which I did a few years back when " Mr Brown " himself appeared at a special screening in London for the promotion of the first Kill Bill.
We hope you guys enjoy the event,it is a rare event;we hope you make the best of it.

just the event alone is going to be hard for me to attend, but I will be there.
And just so everyone knows, here's a post from T from another thread:
Okay here's the deal....
The new dates are Saturday, August 25th and Sunday, August 26th.
The fight choreography class will be held on Saturday and the banquet dinner will be held Saturday evening.
The expo will be held on Sunday.
Everything else is still the same (location, etc.)
There are still some tickets available for the fight choreography class, so if you're interested hit up Richard at director1666@aol.com
