Well, in the spirit of Halloween on Wednesday, I was wondering what horror films everyone likes, whether it's a blockbuster or even the good ol' B-movie types. Here's my list (in no particular order)

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) - classic! I also did like the remake with Andrew Bryniarski as Leatherface and the prequel.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space - reminds me of 50's B movies and a lot of fun
Slaughter High - saw this on cable a few weeks ago for the first time in 15 years.
2001 Maniacs - insane movie with Robert Englund as a redneck killer
The Howling - I am a huge fan of werewolf films as long as the transformations are good, like Howling and American Werewolf in London

I haven't seen any of the Saw movies yet...just got them recently and will probably have a Saw marathon on Wednesday, of course minus Saw IV which comes out tomorrow.

The Burning was a great Friday the 13th ripoff with a great raft massacre scene. Personally I'd love to see this remade somehow.

I saw Hostel for the first time last month, was a little extreme for me but I'd still probably watch it and nice cameo from Takashi Miike.

What are your favorites?

I enjoyed the 80's Hollywood Horror Genre those were some great movies.

Halloween 1&2 - still the best
American Werewolf in London
The Howling
Terror Train
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - classic
Dog Soldiers - Great Werewolf movie
Aliens - more Sci-Fi than horror
Demon Night
Dawn of the Dead - The Original
Zombies
Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things - Zombie Movie
The Thing
Hellraiser II

This list could go on but these are just a few off the top of my head.

Just talking about this today at work.
Not a huge fan of the genre but these are some I enjoy....

The Shining (1980)
- Classic Kubrick!

Halloween (1978)
- The original is still the best.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)
- Many hated the ending. I thought it was superb.

Alien (1979)
- The first film was a horror/sci-fi (the sequels became action/sci-fi).

Two other mixed genre flix: Event Horizon (1997) and Pitch Black (2000).
Finally, for nostalga ... Dawn of the Dead (1978), The Thing (1982) and The Blob (1958).

As far as I'm concerned, EVIL DEAD II kicks all other horror movies right in the balls, and then stands there chuckling merrily while they clutch their aching groins and moan. It's more horror-comedy, of course, but I think it's an almost perfect movie.

I've been getting into Amando de Ossorio lately, the TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD guy. I enjoyed his DEMON WITCH CHILD a lot, even though it's a little stagey and doesn't have the kind of wide vistas the BLIND DEAD movies had. Sometimes it's hard to articulate what it is you like about a movie - particularly one that's a knock-off (of THE EXORCIST in this case), and which has unusually low production values; sometimes they just have an edge on other films because they're geniunely unpredictable and unsettling.

Also been watching a lot of old slashers on VHS - I've posted about them over on my blog. Some of them are just brutally idiotic, but when they work, they work beautifully.

I'm one of those suckers who was totally drawn in to THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. When I first watched it I was ready to despise it, because there's always a self-righteous pleasure in loudly disbelieving the hype, but it sucked me in, chewed me up and spat me out. I haven't watched it in about four years, but that movie really did have an unforgettable ending. I still sometimes say "I kicked that stupid map in the creek!" when I've done something stupid.

I'm a huge Larry Cohen fan - GOD TOLD ME TO, Q THE WINGED SERPENT, THE STUFF, the ALIVE trilogy - they're just incredibly twisted, darkly funny, endlessly inventive movies. He's such a cool guy he actually hangs out with Stan Lee (who appeared in Cohen's THE AMBULANCE), so I can even forgive him for writing PHONE BOOTH.

Two Best imo are The Exorcist and The Shining.
Evil Deads are awesome but have to much humor to be considered all the way horror (but the humor is what makes it so great) for me.
I also like the Brian Yuzna/Stuart Gordon movies like the Re-Animator, From Beyond, and the newer Dagon.
Human Lantern's was great, I still need get the new shaw horrors just released.
Tale of Two Sisters was really good.
I'll always love the old B/W and Hammer horrors, I can sit and watch that shit all night.

Tosh, just watched The Mummy (1958) two nights ago after seeing Hammer's Hound Of The Baskervilles. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, you know it! Awesome stuff. Approaching Halloween my girlfriend and I've been watching horror flicks all month ie: The Old Dark House (1932), The Raven (1936), Son Of Frankenstein (1939), From Beyond, The Reanimater, Human Lanterns, and Tourist Trap. The Body Snatcher (Boris Karloff), Horror Of Dracula, Human Monster (Bela Lugosi), The Ghoul (Boris Karloff), Young Frankenstein, and Bloody Parrot, are next. Oh! And of course It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, an annual staple. Gotta see the 3D Nightmare Before Christmas in theatres now. I love Halloween. My favorite holiday. :)

The Exorcist is probably the most frightning and disturbing horror movie I've ever seen. Halloween, Salem's Lot, Fright Night, An American Werewolf in London and The Lost Boys are enjoyable ones too. Also like all the Hammer flicks with Dracula, Frankenstein, and the film Curse of the Werewolf. There was also a film I saw a long time ago starring William Hurt called Altered States, it's about this scientist that gets into some kind of sensory deprivation chamber and digresses back through the evolutionary cycle to a primitive caveman type, like half monkey and half man. It was a very weird film but very interesting and intriuging at the same time. Hitchcock's Psycho is a classic and scary for not what you see, but what you think you see because it's not really gory. About the goriest I've ever seen was Fulchi's Zombie, now that was pretty disgusting and made me sick. Don't watch on a full stomach!

And if you consider that Fulci could be even more disgusting if he wanted to...;-)
Still, I'd call some of his movies wonderful instances of surrealism on film - and now I'm not kidding...;) Plus, Fulci was real great at showing the horror of the inevitable. Come to think of it, it's just as good as (and sometimes even better than) the oh so popular fear of the unknown...;-)

The Eye - the film is far from perfect but the hospital corridor and elevator scenes are simply genius. The theatrical timing of camera angles, focus, and sound are literally perfect. The only scenes since the shining twins that really freaked me out. So simple, so effective.

Just watched The Ghoul 1933 last night. A Halloween treat. Excellent film. Boris Karloff, Ernest Thesiger, Sir Cedric Hardwick all kicked ass. At the beginning a character is pouring Absinthe into a glass, puts a cube of suger onto a spoon, then pours some other liquid (alcohol?) over the cube of sugar into the same glass. What is that second liquid? The mysteries never end.

Pretty much agree with all before, plus i would add a Japanese movie called House. This has to be one of the most outrageously funny, inventive, frenetic, innovative, psychedelic movies (not just horror) I've ever seen. Anyone else seen it?

I was lucky enough to see it in the filmhouse cinema in Edinburgh a couple of years back in a Japanese cult film season (which also introduced me to my fave Japanese film of all time Sword of Doom, Branded to Kill, Yakuza Graveyard and others) in the only subtitled print in the world (apparently). Honestly i can't reccomend this movie enough. I've been searching in vain for a dvd copy, anyone got one? If your a fan of comedy horror such as Evil Dead 2 you will love this. I belly laughed more than a couple of times watching it. Its also got some sweet martial arts thrown in for good measure. One to please everyone!

Really, I think Dawn of the Dead (Romero's 1978 version, naturally), is the greatest horror film ever made.

It's one of the most singularly satisfying films ever made, one of the few films that truly has something for everyone and satisfies almost every part of the brain.

It's intelligent and highly sociopolitical with a subtext that is truly food for thought, but also has enough blood, guts and splattery gore to be enjoyed strictly on the level of entertainment. It's a straight out political satire and rather amusing comedy, but scary and disturbing as well.

It is many things on a great many levels and I can only admire that. That is truly powerful art to me.

love Dawn Of The Dead & Day Of The Dead.
scripts full of humour & memorable lines, as well as nasty ass gore & people being ripped to bits..... has anyone else ever noticed how Romero used to usually have a black actor as the hero in his films??

I'm quite a fan of the 1960s/1970s british horror movies from Amicus which had several mini stories like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror and Torture Garden.

A few of my favorites include, Jaws, Texas Chainsaw, Suspiria, Night of the living dead, and the Omen. Anything nowadays is either pg-13, a crappy remake, or a torture flick. They also just aren't the same with computer graphics. I guess I prefer my horror movies like my Kung Fu...Classic

wow. nobody ever gives amicus enough credit. good call with those three.
did you like Dr. Terror's House of Horrors? it was my first amicus film

next was vault of horror, and i loved it because of tom baker.

then came tales from the crypt, and Cushing's zombie is probably the most underrated and creepiest in cinema history. loved the makeup with the whole "eyeless" zombie thing. really creepy for a 5 year old to watch. my dad was like "hey, it's classic cuz it has Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee in it." , so he conned my mom into letting me get it at the video store (my mom was the one who enforced the parental code....all i could watch were classic horror films, the three stooges, SOME kung fu, and any godzilla film. needless to say i never complained) boy was my mom pissed at my dad at the end of cushing's segment!

That is truly powerful art to me.

james i couldn't agree more. the only thing (as i got older) that i have kind of a gripe with is the zombie paint. that is one of the reasons i love fulci's Zombi so much. very atmospheric and gianetto de rossi's effects were brilliant. what are your thoughts on it? i feel what fulci lacked (in contrast to romero's brillaint Dawn) in story, character development, budget, and overal coherence, he made up for tenfold with the atmosphere, location, and special effects.

still, however, dawn of the dead is probably one of the 10 films i can watch any day, anywhere, anytime

Prince Of Darkness(John Carpender's)-Completly erie and unsettling start to finish.

Lost Highway(David Lynch)-Many ways to interpret and each one horrifying

The Orphanage(Juan Antonio Bayona)-One of the creepiest kid ghosts i"ve seen.

Audition(Takashi Miike)-Just Elegant in it's brutality.

The Doom Generation(Greg Araki)-Outragously gratuitous sex and violence, a blast to watch.

They Live(John Carpender)-Come on, this movies a blast. Aliens taking over the world, only visible through sunglasses, and Rowdy Roddy Piper just found out.

Paranormal Activity is a absolutely creepy film that effectively captures the fear of total darkness. Like any good horror film the scares come from what you don't see.

Good use of sound and tension building.

It could be epic but I don't know if Carpenter has what it takes as a director anymore. He'd probably have to pass it off to someone else and just be the producer. Either way I'd like to see it happen. I know the guy who wrote the script for 30 Days of Night was also working on a mini-series for The Thing.

I work in special effects, and the word is that there is actually a "The Thing" prequel in pre-production right now. It's supposedly about the Norwegians. However, everyone at the camp speaks English, and there are actually Americans in the camp, which totally conflicts with "The Thing", right?!
Anywho, sadly, Carpenter isn't really involved much. I'd love to see him tackle a horror film again, providing it's better than "Ghost of Mars"!

I really don't get into the stuff referred to as 'torture-porn'. I like the more classic themes.
The Wicker Man (the classic)
The "Underworld" trilogy
The Ring/Ringu (I like both versions)
The Hammer vampire films
The Howling (I like werewolf movies but none really stand out)
Night of the Living Dead (the Romero classic)

Actually, pick a zombie movie, any will do. Zombies are truly the only horror movies that freak me out to the point that I go through my house and quintuple check every door and window and grab every available blade(machetes, swords, knives, hatchets, axes, spears, fingernail clippers, you name it 'cause I don't own a firearm) and make sure they are readily available for use should I need them.

When "28 Days Later" came out, my wife, a good friend, and I went and saw it. I'd read about it but neither of them knew anything of the movie. My friend who was experiencing a great deal of lower back pain had me hysterical and not from fright. He was grabbing my knee and arm at times when jumping with fright and he kept saying "Ow! My back!" and "This movie is killing me!" A few weeks later it was discovered that he had an encapsulated tumor bulging out of one of his kidneys and that was what was causing all his lower back distress. Thankfully it was operable and successfully removed.

Always have been meaning to see the Korean movie 'The Host'. Is it any good?

Have to add Paranormal Activity 2 to this list. I really liked the 1st one, but this one really ups the ante on scares. I don't scare easy at the movies, but this one had me jumping out of my seat a couple of times. That never happens to me.

It's now on my list of favorite horror films.

Iron Boat: I have the movie its not really a scary movie or I wouldn't even call it a horror movie its just a sick twisted movie! Made by Takashi Miike and we have a post about it in the Korean section if you search you'll see it.

I like Italian horror, but all too often I find that it decides to make no sense and hide behind the idea that it is avant garde or arty (as opposed to something like Versus which makes no sense and flaunts it). Still, when they decide to make a coherent film the Italians can make some really disturbing stuff! It's funny that we just did a Halloween episode of my movie podcast and my cohost and I both skipped over the Italian films in general even though we planned out the show at midnight horror movie screenings, many of which where Italian films. We concentrate on "the cinema of ass kicking," though, not horror.

I really like Hammer films. Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter is a favorite. I also have a deep, abiding love for the Satanic Knights Templar turned zombies (and occasionally pirates) in the Blind Dead films from Spain. I also like a good silent horror film like Nosferatu. That is just friggin' creepy!

One of my favorites from Takashi Miike and it is actually coherent. I agree with Daisho's comment: "I wouldn't even call it a horror movie its just a sick twisted movie!" (though I hope it is in the Japanese section not Korean). It starts off slow, but works quite well with the plot (reading a Philip Chung article on the film right now who called it his size favorite Asian Horror film in an older Asianweek National article from 2008). However, it really didn't frighten me and it certainly is not as sick as say Full Metal Yakuza or Ichi The Killer.

EDIT: OK it is in the Korean section, but it was acknowledged as in the wrong area. Hmm, mods should have moved it.
