Here's the version I currently own. I was wondering if it is the best version out right now.

I'm pretty satisfied with it, although I wish I could find a remastered version in widescreen. But I'm assuming this movie hasn't had the proper treatment it deserves yet. Am I right?

I've seen two versions of this. One is Eng dubbed and the other has original language with burnt? in subs. Both were fullscreen.

And yes, love to see this sucker is a wide copy someday.

Toby Russell has it on reels wide. Now why can't he release that gem!

The best one I have is the Tai Seng vhs, which unfortunately has a canto-dub, but is subtitled. Its slightly wider than the Ground Zero DVD.

I know exactly which version you're talking about. A friend of mine, who moved away a long time ago, had it. We used to watch it all the time. And I agree, it's probably the best version I've seen too. Hopefully this Toby Russell fellow could share his WS version someday. :D

Thanks for the replies guys. Maybe someone should make up a wish list for classics like these that haven't been properly remastered yet.

I was wondering if this film has ever been released in its original aspect ratio on DVD? Do we know who has the rights to this film? I personally like this one a lot. Any help would be appreciated. I tried doing the search but didn't come up with any answers. Thank you.

I just dug this out of my VHS collection this week to make a copy for a trade. I noticed it was squeezed (horizontally compressed), so first I made a digital transfer- copying the VHS onto DVD. Then I used the kick ass X-Y scaling feature on my DVD player to un-squeeze the image, and made a copy of that. This second one is now my "master" copy. The credits were the full 2:35:1 image, so this part looks beautiful now. But the film itself was only slightly squeezed, so I had to pause the recording and readjust the aspect ratio again. Upon fixing it, the film is only partially letterboxed at around 1:78:1. But it still looks much better!

There hasn't been any remastered version. The widest version I've seen was the Tai Seng video, which was an 80s canto-dub with english subs. It was just a fraction wider than the Ground Zero DVD.

It's too bad this gem hasn't been properly remastered in WS yet. I wonder if it'll ever get done. It's looooong overdue (same goes for Shaolin & WuTang).

Against Lama is pretty good, but no way I could ever compare it to Vs. Chang Shan makes everybody in Against Lama look like they just started practicing martial arts.

Well, there is someone who has it wide 35mm, but since it's not worth doing dvd's any more, he is not releasing any more. He has many super rares, but the bottom has dropped out of the home video market so we'll never see them....Some of you will know who I'm talking about ;)

All the versions I’ve seen, wide or full screen, are not too good. I’d say go with this version since you get some other movies you may not have seen- http://www.amazon.com/Shaolin-Against-Wu-Tang-10-Film-Collection/dp/B001OFM2TM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1250921869&sr=1-1

Undaunted Wudang and Unbeaten 28 are good, and Wu Tang Magic Kick and Shaolin Mystagogue are liked by many.

Dude...it's all about Chen Shan in this one. His kung fu is ruthless yo! He's, like, one of the most bad ass baddies I've ever seen (i.e. in Seven Steps of Kung Fu).

Does anyone know his background; if he's a real-life martial arts practioner (as I'm sure he is), and which art did he study?

Looking at the way he handles himself I'd say he's highly skilled in taekwondo and boxing, and probably loads of other stuff. Here's part of an interview Abbotwhite did with him- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZ8rHga2UnA&feature=channel_page

“Then the referee came in and grabbed me, so I whacked him too”. “When I was young I beat many cops”. Gotta love Chang Shan

Hate to do this, but since we're talking bottom of the barrel to find this incredible movie, recommend this version::crossedlips:

The transfer is very good and it has the classic dub. IMO, it's the best version until a legit release comes (if ever).

Against Lama isn't half the movie Vs Lama is. There are so many versions of it on VHS and on DVD, there isn't really any one that stands out. There was that clamshell VHS version that was released in the 90s that was pretty good looking. I can't remember the company name that put it out. Then I came across a version which had a different english dub where the characters had names like Roger and Rick and it sounded like they were making up the dialogue as they watched the action on the screen. I didn't compare that VHS to the other versions to see if they used the same script.

Vs Lama has got to exists somewhere in widescreen. I'm surprised that such a high demand movie has yet to be discovered and/or put out in widescreen. Not even Toby Russell has been able to get this out in that form?
