Hey guys,

I'm sure there's probably already a thread about this, but I was just wondering because I own several Venoms films and just want to make sure there's not a really good one that I'm missing.

My favorite is Shaolin Rescuers, and Crippled Avengers and Golden Arm are close behind.

For me it's Invincible Shaolin & Crippled Avengers.

It would be beneficial to know which V-films you had to begin with and which ones of these you prefer.
All V-films are not created equal and certain movies suit certain tastes.

Crippled Avengers and Masked Avengers are probably my fav venoms films, followed by Flag of Iron and Magnificent Ruffians

Flag of Iron is definitely one of my favorites. Such great choreography in that film. I also liked Shaolin Invincible, The Five Venoms, Chinatown Kid and Kid with the Golden Arm. Those are all the best Venoms films, in my humble opinion.

My favs are
Crippled Avengers
Masked Avengers
Daredevils
Killer Army
Kid with the Golden Arm
For me the best fight scene they did as a group is the last 20 minutes od Daredevils or Killer Army, and best opera group fight for me is Magnificent Ruffians.

Overall: 5 venoms.
Action and choreography: 2 Champions of Shaolin. The fight between Lo Meng and Wang Li on the stage is awesome, and what a great finale from Lu Feng.

I also enjoyed Crippled Avengers a lot for the inventive choreography, but the finale with the opera troupe was a bit too much of a performance (although impressive). I preferred Lo Meng vs Chen Kuan Tai. And by the way, what is up with that dodgy wirework on Kuo Chui at the end? (You know the one I mean). Almost looked like a blooper.

If I had to choose just one, then probably Five Deadly Venoms.
I've immensely enjoyed all Venom flicks I've seen - but 5DV kinda stands out.

1. Crippled Avengers
2. Flag of Iron
3. Masked Avengers
4. The Kid with the Golden Arm
5. Ten Tigers of Kwangtung (technically this was an all-star SB film, but the Venoms appear in it)
6. Chinatown Kid
7. Invincible Shaolin
8. Five Venoms
9. Daredevils
10. Magnificent Ruffians
11. Shaolin Rescuers

right this very moment, my venoms charts would look s/t like this (not counting BA series/chinatown kid/heaven and hell/shaolin temple/naval commandos):

1. crippled avengers
2. 5 venoms
3. masked avengers
4. killer army
5. kid with the golden arm
6. legend of the fox
7. magnificent ruffians
8. flag of iron
9. two champions
10. shaolin rescuers
11. house of traps
12. sword stained
13. ten tigers
14. invincible shaolin
15. ode to gallantry
16. daredevils
17. life gamble

special props to the great fun 'indie-venoms' (philip kwok directed) ninja in the deadly trap

killer army/rebel intruders= first venoms flick i ever owned (ca. 1986/7), gets extra credits.
LotF= one of the most inspired directorial works of CC`s late phase, therefore i rank it above some of the venoms most renowned classics.
invincible shaolin & the daredevils rank low like that cuz ive gotten a little sick of the training and demonstration schtick (with both) and i think invincible shaolin`s structure/plot is boring, cheap, anticlimactic.
with daredevils its mostly the radical emphasis on the training/demo thing, its gotta be mentioned tho that its showdown is a true all time kf-hall-of-famer.
havent watched the remastered version of the rescuers yet. theres a small chance it will climb a few positions once i have.

5. Ten Tigers of Kwangtung (technically this was an all-star SB film, but the Venoms appear in it)

Story-2/5
Plot-2/5
Kung Fu=5/5
Over All-2.5/5 only because of the Kung Fu.
Different strokes for different folks....
Just would not have it in my top 5. Venom's to me means the original 6 from 5 Deadly Venom's, the rest were 2nd tier Venom's and also the Baby Venom's
1.LIZARD- Kuo Chui
2.CENTIPEDE- Lu Feng
3.SCORPION- Sun Chein
4.TOAD- Lo Mang
5.SNAKE- Wei Pai
6.STUDENT- Chiang Sheng

Exactly.

5 Venoms
Invincible Shaolin
Kid w/ The Golden Arms
Ten Tigers From Kwangtung

Unless Im missing one they ALL appeared in.

There are other films that some, even most of them appeared in. I know most dont agree, but IMHO theres only 4 "Venoms Films."

I know it only had three venoms but Ninja in the Deadly Trap is so cool! I loved that film, the end fight between Philip Kwok and Yasuaki Kurate could have been longer! Philip Kwok should have made more films.

Crippled Avengers
Masked Avengers
Magnificent Ruffians

I love these!!
also to will 91:

On the commentary of ninja in the deadly trap they seemed unsure as to who had the idea first, chang cheh or kuo chui for these almost identical plots. I think that its obvious chang cheh did because it came out 2 years prioir right?

5 Element Ninja came out in 82, Ninja in the Deadly Trap came out in 85.

I like Ninja in the Deadly Trap but there's a scene where they're fighting and a punch that Lu Feng throws lands literally a foot away from the guys face that he's fighting. But the guy of course falls down. That always bothered me.

Anyway my favorite Venoms pics are:

5 Deadly Venoms
Kid with the Golden Arm
Invincible Shaolin
Flag of Iron
Crippled Avengers
Masked Avengers
House of Traps
2 Champions of Shaolin

prolly "sword stained with royal blood",followed by flag of iron and invincible shaolin...kid with golden arm would prolly rank finest but I hate chiang sheng and other axeman characters and thing "golden arm" guy have not given much to do(few scenes lo meng appears are extremely cool though)

Actually, it came out in 1983 and was released by Ocean shores Video in 1985. ;)

Thanks a lot for all the great suggestions guys.

I guess I should have listed the Venoms flicks I owned first. Here they are:

5 Deadly Venoms
Crippled Avengers
Kid with Golden Arms
Invincible Shaolin
10 Tigers of Kwantung

It sounds as if a lot of people like Flag of Iron, Masked Avengers, and Shaolin Rescuers. Which of these movies is the most action-packed? My Favorites are Crippled Avengers and Invincible Shaolin because of the great action and excellent choreography. Which would you suggest based upon my favorites and based upon maximum action and tight choreography?

will91XingYu

Shaolin Rescuers is basically all fights if i can remember and it has all the venoms (apart from Wei Pak), while Masked Avengers is the cooler film (imo) but dosn't have Sun Chien or Lo Meng, but it does have Chin Siu and Chu Ko in major roles, both films have amazing end fights. I'd get those two first then Daredevils! Flag of Iron is quite good but boring in parts.

For Venoms flicks, you can't go wrong with the following:

Invincible Shaolin

Kid With The Golden Arm
Magnificen Ruffians
Flag of Iron, which is a remake of The Duel.

these can easily get the juices flowing for Venom fare. :D

Hey Guys,

I just got Shaolin Rescuers. This movie was just what I was looking for. The action was great and the movie was fun......well, as fun as a Chang Cheh flick can be. Magnificent Ruffians and Two Champions of Shaolin are on their way too, so I'm hooked up. Thanks a lot for all the suggestions.

Crippled Avengers & 5 Venoms were both great. I also liked Shaolin Rescuers & Invincible Shaolin. Golden Arm was pretty good too. Masked Avengers was a lot of fun.

House Of Traps was caca & makes me angry just thinking about how awful it was. Sword Stained with Royal Blood put me to sleep maybe 5-6 times. Ten Tigers was a pretty terrible film too.

there is not such thing as bad venom clip...it depends kinda of my mood which I rate best...
but seeing kid with the golden arm, rebel intruders and crippled avengers is not bad thing.
daredevils is not maybe your hardcore kungfu addict stuff but welldeveloped storyline it does have.
brave archer#2 cannot maybe counted as pure venom movie but seeing lo meng fight fu sheng is worth it
5 deadly venoms maybe should have more fight but itīs gothic atmosphere mesmerized at least me.

I recently watched KWTGA and I must admit that it is a tad overrated. It had some solid fights at the end, but it just didn't do it for me overall in comparison to the other Venoms flicks I've seen so far. Next up is Magnificent Ruffians. Got slightly higher expectations there.

Dammit! Just when I thought I had a chance of convincing oldeschool and Teako that this is a bad film, this comment comes back to bite me in the ass. I hate Flag of Iron, but I agree the flag fighting is pretty cool. Check out Hellz Windstaff. The flag is not used as a weapon, but it is used in a training scene.

It didn't seem like there was any thought put into the story, and the fights are too short. Even Life gamble I found much more interesting than Flag of Iron. Lo Meng should have done some actual fighting other than that brief moment he gets, but I thought the daggers thing was actually pretty cool. I like movies with at least a little bit of thought put into it. Flag of Iron was just mindless, and if you are going to have a mindless movie, the fights should be better and longer than they are in flag of Iron. I just hate it. I went into it expecting greatness, and what I got was a dud.

trailer of "ode to gallantry"looks really yummy,I dun dare to watch 6mins clip:eek:.Invincible shao-lin is terrific movie in beginning&in the end but in middlepart fight or two instead of extended training sessions would have made it classic.
I dun have complain about flagfight, love that movie, however acrobatics bothered me in Crippled Avengers.there was some moments 3 opera venoms got too heavily into somersaults etc.Strong performances by Chen Kuan Tai,Sun Chien and Lo Meng saved this movie.

A difficult choice but as much as I love CRIPPLED AVENGERS, I'd have to say SHAOLIN RESCUERS as everyone gets to shine in one form or another and the finale has so much variety in its fight choreography and Lo, Kuo and Sun get to display some great chemistry between them as well as some unexpectedly good comical bits.

Thanks, Morgoth:) Even though Chang's later crew were for the most part, not well liked in HK, the venom movies brought something different to the table with each new film in terms of style, setting, characters and combat making the choice of picking a fave very difficult.

One thing I love about RESCUERS is it takes the conventions of the indy KF flick and gives it some substance. In so many of those movie it's always the same thing-at the opening, the main villain kills another master which leads to the intro of the young hero(s). The audience is then subjected to near endless scenes of often times annoying comedy shenanigans that add nothing to the film save for acting as filler till the big final fight. RESCUERS gives its principles humanity and a reason for being or at least gives them a WANT for reason for being. They desire a purpose and Chang Cheh gives them one and builds the characters around the comedy bits as opposed to the other way around.

These movies take place in a time where you put your honor before you life, and having a cause to die for was the best reason to live, take Shaolin Rescuers, Lo Mang And Kuo Chui talk about giving their lifes for the historical hero figure, they were basically peasants and thought if they could die for him they would be remembered, and that's exactly what they did:p

For me it's hard to pick one above the rest. There are those I like and those I don't, with a few in the middle. I don't think I can pick one favorite as all those I love have a little somthing going for them.

The best of the best, definate must own:

Cripled avengers (Great characters and acrobatic fights, the final fight between Lu Feng, Chiang Sheng and Kwok Chui is just pure eye candy)
Rebel Intruders (Amazing fights, awesome final, good story)
Daredevils (IMO one of the best developed story for a venoms movie, great fights)
Invincible Shaolin (Great characters, love the theme music, good fights, great interaction between the characters.)
Shaolin Rescuers ( Lots of fights, good story, Lu Feng's best performance ever in the final fight, simply amazing, Everyone makes it to the final fight!!!)

Great works, definately worth geting:

Magnificient Ruffians (Good film, fights not on par with the best, but still good, probably the best of this group)
Five venoms (Great concept, great characters, not enough fights)
Masked avengers (Great atmosphere, awesome final fight)
House of traps (to much flaws, fights are to short, but what there is, is amazing, the house itself is kinda cool)

Average efforts, but worth checking out:

Kid with the golden arm: (didn't do it for me, barely average)
Flag of Iron : (Although good final fight, pretty boring overall)
Sword stained with royal blood: (Good fights, painfull to sit through)

The bottom of the barril, definately can pass on those:
Ten Tigers of Kwantung: (Probably the worst, a complete mess)
Ode to gallantry: (Never seen it but never heard one good comment about it.)

I have also yet to see:
Legend of the fox
Life gamble

How are those?

Music in "invincible shaolin" is indeed great(well,so is everything else in movie)..and you did not mention "2 champions of shaolin",it has one of best end brawls,Lu Feng delivers 'again*impressive trident work and his henchmen show some good monkey kung-fu..
legend of the fox will not qualify into best 7 venom movies but it`s still above average movie.*I still have magnificent ruffians&ode to gallantry unseen*

Crippled Avengers, Masked Avengers, 5 Element Ninjas(not full on venoms films, but whatever) get a solid 10/10
Flag of Iron(morgoth will agree) & Magnificent Ruffians: 9/10
Shaolin Rescuers, Rebel Intruders, House of Traps, Five Venoms, Sword Stained With Royal Blood=7-8/10
2 Champions of Shaolin, Invincible Shaolin, Kid with the Golden Arm= 6/10
10 Tigers from Kwangtung: 2/10

Legend of the Fox= If you liked Sword Stained With Royal Blood, you will like this. I think the pacing is a bit better than Sword Stained with Royal Blood and theres more fighting thru out the film than in Sword Stained With Royal Blood(which most of the fighting comes near the end). I went into watching this with no expectations and it was decent, but not the best by any means.
I rate this 7.5 or 8/10

Ode to Gallantry= Crapfest. One of the weaker Venoms films by far. Get only if you want to complete your venoms collection. The ending is just retarded. This is 3/10 with the action that is present the only redeeming factor.

Life Gamble=Kung Fu Spaghetti Western with Daggers instead of pistols. You get to witness Lo Meng wear a bad wig and use daggers. To me Kuo Chu steals the show although it kind was more geared as a Fu Sheng vehicle. Chiang Sheng has very lil air time and Lu Feng looks like Zorro in the beginning. If you're looking for non stop action this is not the movie. Its a lil more dialogue driven than pure action. Kuo Chu does kick some ass near the end. Most Venom fans are split on this movie but i liked it. I give it a 7/10

Heaven and Hell is a lot of fun. And Lee I Min has a small but really good role in Life Gamble. I thought Life gamble was boring, but I still enjoyed it. 6/10 rating from me, almost the same rating that oldeschool gave it. ;)

it`s really pretty hard for me to rate best as everytime I rewatch seems I discover something new...but I think voting "masked avengers","2 champions of shaolin" and "kid with golden arm" not unfair.feels like more than after last view.

Man, I still haven't seen Masked Avengers.. Only seen the finale on youtube and it was INTENSE. It definately tops my to-get list. The three villains are Wong Lik, Chu Ko and Lu Feng, right?

Invincible Shaolin

The Crippled Avengers

The Masked Avengers

The Five Venoms

Kid With The Golden Arm

If you saw no other Venoms fare, these would suffice.
Action, intrigue, set & costume design, these features have it all. :D

To be honest I don't really understand why so many people like KWTGA. The story was way too messy, and although some of the fights were alright, I've seen all the venoms do a lot better. All in all, I just wasn't as intrigued while watching this in comparison with the other venoms flicks I've seen. Maybe I should see the remastered version before I judge it completely, but I've watched my DVD twice now and it didn't do much.

I also wish there were a bit more hand to hand fights in some of the venoms movies, like there was in 5 venoms. The trident work in Masked Avengers is awesome though. Was something hypnotizing about Chu Ko's moves when he came down on the pillar in the final fight.

"more hand to hand fights"it pretty much depends does lo meng or sun chien stay in business to the end.Opera trained trio seems to do most weapons stuff,Invincible Shaolin rare item lu feng stays unarmed(but that does not make him less dangerous) through whole movie.
Sword Stained With Royal Blood features maybe least hand to hand fighting but for those who enjoy sword fights it`s bliss.

The remastered version of Kid with the Golden Arm only includes a few minutes in the beginning and changes the sequence where Iron Robe sends out a signal. With that said, i highly doubt you need to watch the remastered version to get a different opinion. I think Silver Spear next to Golden Arm were the best characters in the movie.

And your Kuo Chu avatars are cool, OS. Are you the same OS with the old Avatar with the guy playing the instrament? Lol, that used to crack me up...

It`s funny when asked best venom flick people drop long list of titles instead of naming just one...
Flag Of Iron in full version is fucking masterpiece(pity about mono sound in IVL disc),stay away from cut bastard english dub.
