I know there has been big discussions about rare films here on the board over the years but just thought i'd ask. I know Snake Deadly Act was quoted as The Rarest kung fu movie in the world (here in the UK) when it was released by Eastern heroes. I just wondered if anybody knows of any rare films that the kung fu fan is really missing out on in terms of fight scenes?

There are movie's that are far more rare then Snake Deadly Act, there's at lease two Shaw's off the top of my head
1.Tiger Boy
2. To Kill A Mastermind

And all kinds of Mainland and Independent films that are rare...Reason most are rare is because of greedy people who don't share.. I have over 1200 Kung Fu movie's and that don't even touch the surface of some of these collector's on this forum I do have many rarities mind you but quality on most of the really rare movie's are grainy and dark and hard to read subs, I still collect to improve on quality! Look through the TRADING/BUYING/SELLING part of this forum and it will help you to learn what's rare or not. And Classic Kung Fu and Shaw Brother's will also aid in your search...

In this era, the only films that are really rare are either being hoarded or cannot be sourced. I don't think anyone really considered Snake Deadly Act to be the Rarest Film at any time really, but it's claver marketing hype.... I guess.

I'm sure that there are great films and great fights that our community has yet to see, however it's less of an issue now as there are more films available now than most of us will have time to watch in our lifetime.

There do remain some holy grail films, especially in terms of print. These days it seems like real rarities are considered the widescreen or the dub or sub of a certain film.

You mean IVL and Celestial didn't get their hands on it! :eek:d

In this era, the only films that are really rare are either being hoarded or cannot be sourced.

A good example of this would be with Wong Tao, he owns several of the original reels of his classics. And until a company like RARESCOPE does, and DID as the commentary of Along Comes a Tiger revealed, ask to buy the film they're pretty much just collecting dust!

I keep mentioning RARESCOPE all the time on this discussion board because ,even though the prints aren't the greatest, they're getting alot of unknown and previously lost films on DVD. They're not your everyday budget release company, Toby Russell is doing a great job with them!

Their latest release which I just got done watching about 10mins ago is Warriors From The Water Margin, I'm not sure if that is a retitle but it's a very good mainland film full of Wushu wizardry and lots of excellent weapons work.
The DVD features the English dub track as well as the Mandarin audio track and remastered English subs.

Well worth £5.99 of anyones money!

I have this one movie on VHS entitled Consumate Power aka Sha-olin Tongzigong (1986). It has the old Martial Arts Video label on the front and back covers. And the label on the VHS tape itself is a homemade sticker which someone typed onto from a computer. I still have yet to see this movie for sale on DVD. I can't even find any reviews on it. But from looking at the info on the back cover, it stars Jet Lee II and Zhang Long, and was directed by Shih Hou. The front cover has a portrait of the real-life 32nd Abbot of Shaolin, Hai-Deng, who was highlighted in the documentary entitled "Shaolin Kung Fu" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGP-wDjof4o ). I think he had something to do with the production. Below is the front cover.

OK, I'll tell you what I know.

Some months ago, Toby Russell mentioned on falkor's site that the Rarescope "label" (not a company) was coming to an end. G's forum has had a lot of techie glitches in recent months, so I haven't been able to access it to see if this news has been reversed.

Indeed, Rarescope did post future releases well in advance and of course some of these were already in the pipeline - hence we just had the recent release of DS/SNR 2-pack.

Other films that were mentioned for future release:
- King of Fists & Dollars
- Ninja In Ancient China
- Chinese Hercules
- Cub Tiger from Kwangtung

I don't believe any of these have actually come out however if Rarescope was still kicking out discs, why is Ninja In AC now going to be released by greenfandvd.com?

I don't say I have my finger on the pulse of Rarescope. Believe you me, I don't want Rarescope to cease either. All I'm stating is what Toby mentioned some months back. Now, Sifu, if you have newer information (not forum hearsay) from either Toby or Cliff at BCI, then please let us know. Thanks...

Sifu

To tell you the truth, from what I've seen on Amazon and other sites it seemed that these DVD releases were a sign that RARESCOPE was not going under! But now that you say that Toby even confirmed it and others are releasing those titles like greenfandvd.com, (I just visited the website and never heard of them before) that means that Toby and RARESCOPE are most likely selling their releases before they totally shut down.

If you look on Amazon, all releases end in November, in other words, NOW! So I'm with teak on this, I believe their done, obviously if someone finds info elswhere please tell us. For now, as we speak I'm on Google trying to scrounge some info or news together. But it doesn't look good. Quite sad really :( Back to budgets!

In the meantime, there are still a couple releases of their's that I haven't bought of seen, can you seem give a thumbs up or down for either of these two? Please include how the prints looked!

Ninja in Ancient China is penciled in for a December release and Dream Sword is hopefully due for a January release from Greenfan, we should all support these releases, both movies are well worth a watch and if we wanna see more from Greenfan then we need to get behind them.

Toby mentioned earlier this year that he bought a package of CC's films from his estate; which is handled by Lawrence Wong Ka-Hee.

He picked up Shanghai 1937 (but not a master), Monkey Goes West, Slaughter in Xian, and Across The River. He was unable to acquire Hidden Hero as they didn't have a print or master. The negs for all these later CC's films are still on the mainland.

This is kind of a technical review, and it's relatively short so I'm not gonna put it in the review section! So yesterday I went to Suncoast and picked up 4 DVDs! One being Showdown at the Cotton Mill, a title some of you have suggested. I gotta say though, the print was dissapointing. The one thing that stood out though, was the remarkably low amount of dirt on the print.

But, the singular thing that ticked me off the most was how washed out the colors looked. If I hadn't known better I might think this movie was from the 50s! (Well maybe not that old!) But the colors were so washed out and contrast so high, that it looked almost sepia toned. I will say that it's watchable, but the thing that will tick people off the most are he overly pale colors, it makes it impossible to read the subtitles at times. But there was one stroke of luck, the best kept and cleanest scene in the film was the finale! Thank god for this, because it is a great one!

I enjoyed the movie alot and was extremely impressed by the high production values and climactic finish. I was expecting something a little more low-budget, so that was a treat as well. :D

http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/1077/cf9djx8.jpg

In the end, if I ever worry about the quality of a print all I have to do is compare it to a Wu Tang Clan or Crash Cinema released and I'll be fine! HA HA!

I agree, what's interesting is that there are alot of bonuses with this DVD! I have never thought of Rarescope as being a budget label, but this is quite impressive. A promo choreographed by Robert Tai, an interview with both stars pertaining to the film, and even a mini reproduction poster on the inside of the case! I'm happy with both of these although I'm surprised that A Sword Named Revenge doesn't have the Mandarin soundtrack - only a (very, very bad) English dub - strange since the print has burned-in subs. Also, I didn't realize that Nora Miao and Doris Lung were in Dream Sword - although Doris Lung's role is not what you expect it to be.

Both titles have the expected print damage and that doesn't bother me considering how rare these are - I just wish the Rarescope releases were encoded to DVD a bit better - they almost always seem to have all sorts of digital issues. Still, like all Rarescope releases, this DVD is definitely worth purchasing, especially if you're a fan of similar Taiwanese films.

Now, if Rarescope would just release Miraculous Flower and the Pearl Cheung version of Burning of the Red Lotus Monastery...

Kudos to Rarescope for releasing Betty Loh Ti's swordplay Duel At The Supreme Gate. This one is super rare too.

By the way, is Elimination Pursuit worth picking up despite the print damage?

I'd say it's worth buying, it's widescreen so you're already guaranteed that the print is better than most budget releases! And it comes with several bonus fight sequences as special features. Morgoth wrote a lengthy review (http://www.amazon.com/Rarescope-Elimination-Roc-Tien-Peng/dp/B000L43PAC) for it on Amazon, it'll give a little more insight as to the DVD.

By the way, nice job Morgoth!

Wasn't Rarescope suppose to release Return of the deadly blade?
That one seems to have great action.

Greenfan is supposed to be releasing return of the deadly Blade. Same company that is releasing Ninja in ancient China.

Greenfan if you read this, can you tell me if there is any way you will be releasing Sword of Justice?

The Rarescope release is English dubbed with no Mandarin option although some scenes are in Mandarin. The English dub is really bad - I wonder if it was done sometime after the original release of the movie? It doesn't seem to feature any of the usual dubbers.

Sounds like that's one of the worst and most disappointing releases of their's! :(

It's pretty good, some interesting training sequences as well.

But HAZ, please don't double-post. If you wanna be funny edit your post, that's one of the basic rules of forums. It's not a big deal, just don't do it again.

dang, that sucks. Hopefully the movie is good enough to overlook it. But the dubbing cant be as bad as that English dub for Lost Swordship (I hope).

And Drunken Dragon is not the best Rarescope has released (IMO), but it is damn good! Put on your running shoes and get moving.

I think it's got the best video transfer, but the release itself with special features and all pales in comparison to Showdown at the Cotton Mill!

I have no complaints about the Rarescope release. For $6.99 it is more than worth it.

I wonder if Chinese Godfather is a Bruce Lee clone type movie. Those rarely turn out very good.

Just wondering - Has Rarescope given up using the white plastic DVD cases? My Dream Sword/Sword Named Revenge came with a black case. It was shrink-wrapped, tho.

Yeah, they have! The first couple releases did have that nice addition. Just a couple weeks ago I bought Showdown at the Cotton Mill which had that, but all subsequent releases went back to black. Oh well.
