China’s state-run broadcaster CCTV is producing THE LEGEND OF BRUCE LEE, a 40-part television series on the life of Bruce Lee. Filming, which began back in April on the $6.4 million dollar series, is taking place in Hong Kong and the U.S.
At one point Taiwanese pop idol and actor Jay Chou (INITIAL D) had been in the running for the lead role but it ultimately went to dance instructor-turned-actor Chan Kwok-Kwan (KUNG FU HUSTLE).
“I’m nervous and also excited, but I will do my best,” stated Chan when speaking to Chinese media. He added that Lee has been his role model since childhood and he has been practicing kung fu for many years.
Chan was originally discovered by Stephen Chow, who had hired him to choreograph a dance sequence for SHAOLIN SOCCER. Chow ended up putting him into the role of a Bruce Lee-like goalie based on Chan’s resemblance to the late martial arts icon.
Unlike most Chinese-produced TV series, this one is being produced with an international audience in mind. A teaser poster (see left) that is circulating on the net shows recognizable international martial arts stars Mark Dacascos, Michael Jai White, Ray Park, and Gary Daniels as part of the cast.
CCTV is planning to air the series in 2008.

Looks promising. The Bruce Lee guy has really makes sure his physique looks as impressively simular as his head. :)
I do hope they'll bother releasing this on DVD with english subs. It still aches me that the Yuen Biao martial arts series are without them :(

This guy looks so much like Bruce, it's unreal. I can tell you one thing, when he was in Shaolin Soccer, his physique was nowhere nearly as tuned as it is on this poster. The guy was skin and bones. Kudos for him applying a serious approach to the role and it also shows the respect and commitment he has for Bruce Lee.
Btw, I heard that he even took up learning from JKD instructors and sent tapes of his workouts to the Lee family, before winning the lead. :)

Although, the star makes a far better Bruce than Jason Scott Lee.

Difficult to tell from the trailer...strange hearing the real Bruce war cries on it...."based on the life of Bruce Lee" would be more accurate.....surprised its got the backing of the estate tho...

Wow,can't wait to see it. The story looks SUPER hammed up though, And is the old guy with the beard suppose to be Yip Man? I've read all of Bruce Lee's books and bios and it was knowledgeable Talking to some of his students. There is enough interesting things in his life to make a great movie and doesn't need to be fictionalized so much.Looking forward to see the show anyways. It's ok to show both sides of the story like Myths and legends, but also documented facts.

Looks like crap. Sadly. I was looking forward to this. The potential was all there. Could be partly because of the horribly edited trailer and 'after effects' thrown in.
For now, I'd rather buy the Yuen Biao series.

The fights look a little iffy to me and I wish they didn't have the wirework in it, but it still looks like it will be entertaining and this guy looks the closest to Bruce out of all the imitators I've seen. He seems to have his mannerisms down pat as well. Being a big fan of Lee I'll definately pick this up when it comes out on DVD.

... I'm chomping at the bit to see this series with Danny Chan stepping up playing our hero. I wish Hollywood would have selected him for an unauthorized version on the Kung Fu icon's life. His appearance alone would be worth the price of admission.

I have seen several pictures of Danny in this series before, but this picture really looks like Bruce Lee. Not perfect but very close. I image that this DVD set will not become avaiable for a long time and will cost big bucks. I hope at the very least that we will get a condensed Tai Seng version of this series.

While he looks great in the series and i loved him in Shaolin Soccer im not too sure about this version of Lee's life, from the trailers it looks like a lot of fictional bullshit has been added which is strange as his real life story is fascinating enough.
We shall see and im hoping its worth the wait.

Yeah i kinda find it silly that the makers think the only way people would know that they are watching a life story of Bruce Lee is to have him fight in the same way that we see him fight in his movies, and add all these made up over the top battles. I'm sure if or when Bruce would have had a real life fight, it would look nothing like what we see in the movies.
I can understand the film makers point of view, they are thinking of the audience that will be wanting to see the Bruce Lee we all know. I just think it would be more interesting to see Bruce as a normal person, as cheesy as it sounds, see the man and not just the legend, and i dont mean the romanticised version we see in Dragon.
In the 70's when the Bruce Clones were making movies, mistakes about his life could be forgiven but in 2007/8, there is no excuses for getting it wrong about him.

BLClones, I couldn't agree with you more! The romanticizing of the story has to come from Linda Lee... Anything questionable about his character, or darkness to his life's image will not be allowed, and I do not understand the thinking behind this. The man has been dead over 30yrs. and she's treating his story as if he was infallable. A shame too because I think he'd win even more fans if the mystery was stripped away for reality.
But, you've got to admit, Danny makes one hell of a Bruce!

I am with you Dragon,I love watching Bruce Lee in action. There was/currently is nobody fiercer! Bruce Lee could take anybody in the past or current MA scene in a real street fight anyday.
BTW, I also think that a movie about the real Bruce Lee should be made. I imagine many are too afraid of the major law suits that Linda would bring forward.
It does seem kind of strange that Bruce Lee is not mentioned more often on these forums.
Dragon, what percentage of Unsettled Matters do you believe to be true? Also, did you get a chance to read the two left out chapters of Unsettled Matters about Brandon and the authors trip to China? I personally feel that most of what is written is probably fact. I was blown away while and after I finished reading that book. The book made me think differently about Bruce, but not in a negative way. I still think that Bruce was/is amazing. Keep posting new threads about the real master.

That's what I'm talking, RM!:)
BTW, I also think that a movie about the real Bruce Lee should be made.
True. Although I am totally aware this is another watered down, fictionalized, dramatization of Lee's life, I still look forward to any revelations that may still spur further insight into this man we never knew, or got to know.
It does seem kind of strange that Bruce Lee is not mentioned more often on these forums.
It seems to me many are victims of the commercialization of his image Bleecker spoke about in his book, and the images of current film stars who wouldn't even be here today if not for the doors Lee kicked open.I recently reviewed Fist of Fury and though I've seen this film dozens of times, I still marvel at his choreography, timing, pacing, and charisma, the Bob Baker fight being a prime example.
Dragon, what percentage of Unsettled Matters do you believe to be true?
I feel the book contains a pretty even handed amount of truth, and you have to understand TB has no reason to lie for his relationship with Linda was an opportunity to view concealed evidence from the inside, and he offered a reward for anyone who can prove his information to be false. Especially the medical information, which I found to be very educational, and would explain Bruce's emotional outbursts, and the delays starting the filming of ETD... There still are no takers 12yrs later for that 20G reward.
Also, did you get a chance to read the two left out chapters of Unsettled Matters about Brandon and the authors trip to China? I personally feel that most of what is written is probably fact.
i DID NOT get the opportunity to read those chapters, and would love the chance. Where can I view them? I did receive a copy of TB's screenplay for Tea Money, he sent me himself. We had a few brief correspondances, and I found him to be a very warm, inviting, and forthright man, answering several questions I had for years sought answers to. The Tea Money manuscript is "...about the death of a famous Chinese entertainer in which foul play is believed to be a part of the story, and an author who investigates and gets to the source..."
VERY INTERESTING.
I was blown away while and after I finished reading that book. The book made me think differently about Bruce, but not in a negative way. I still think that Bruce was/is amazing.
I got the very same feeling, as if so much information TB revealed was able to close the gap between the man, and his mythology.:)

When I first saw Shaolin Soccer and saw Danny looking like Bruce Lee, I was in complete shock. I was like OMG, this guy looks just like Bruce Lee and I don't mean any Lee-alike...I mean the real deal. Makes me wonder why he wasn't discovered sooner. Then I also heard he is a dance teacher and was responsible for choreographing the "Thriller"-like sequence of Shaolin Soccer and the opening Axe Gang dance in Kung Fu Hustle.

All the more reason to get a great Choreographer, train the guy, and re-film G.O.D. with him playing Lee's role, and finding a Chieh Yuen and James Chien Look-a-like. His dancer's pedigree should really help with Lee-like footwork, seeing that mostly all who've attempted to play the screen star had trouble with that. We can dream, right? I mean there have been noted dancers from the past who've gone on to much success without any real knowledge of the Martial Arts, right, Mr. Carradine?

Is Danny sometimes known as Johnny Kwan? Also, if Bey Logan wrote a book called "Hong Kong Action Cinema", then didn't that book say that Brandon wanted to use his dad's notes and then produce and star in a real "Game of Death" movie?
In case you didn't know, Danny appeared in the L.A. area(Pasadena) at around last September and gave a short kung fu demonstration during a Chinese stage show.
If actor Ray Park("Star Wars Episode 1", "X-Men") is a co-star of "The Legend of Bruce Lee", then I'll try to ask him about "TLoBL" during Ray's appearance at this month's Wizard World L.A. convention. I guess that I'll also ask Ray if there's still going to be an "Iron Fist" movie, and if he's going to play that Marvel Comics character.

I have that book right in front of me and I checked it out wackie. It didn't say anything about Brandon wanting to make a real Game of Death movie, but it did say that Bolo Yeung's dream project is to make a sequel to Enter the Dragon with himself in the lead role.
This was all in the chapter on Bruce Lee.
I had gotten the book for my 18th birthday...and this was 11 years ago. I believe the book is now OOP.

He definitely IS in it. Apparantly, he is playing Chuck Norris. The trailer shows the two sparring in a gym I believe. It says he plays Chuck Norris, but I'm not sure this is true. Well, we'll see.

Because he's a dancer, I'm willing to give him a pass on his MA expertise. I mean who out there is close to Lee in that department anyway? As long as he represents himself adequately, I'm certain the accolades will come. He's probably the best thing going today, if ever, simply because he's had the opportunity to see the terrible others who came before, and the dilligence he showed when vying for the role. The man totally transformed his physique to play Bruce, and his hard work paid tremendous dividends. Look at Shaolin Soccer and view him in these Trailers for the series, he doesn't even look like Danny Chan anymore, he looks like Bruce Lee, only slightly taller.

I know that this is on the Main page of the site when we log on but I thought I'd like to hear what everyone has to say about it. I for one think it looks OK, but it won't be until we see it to really be able to make a good judgement on the movie. I just hope that Chan Kwok-kwan really does Bruce justice in portraying him.

Id say they put the shows $6.4 million budget to good use. Production look very good by Chinese television standards and as an action series in general, it actually looks promising. What may draw the most heat from fans is what appears to be highly stylized action that makes liberal use of wirework to enhance Chans physical performance.
Like Lee, Chan has a background in dance but not in martial arts. Hes been training to some extent at least as far back as when Stephen Chow cast him as a Bruce Lee look-a-like goalie in SHAOLIN SOCCER (2001). Chan may be relying on artifice for his screen fighting but he needs no help in looking the part. There have been dozens of actors who have been cast in the mold of Bruce Lee, even superstars Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen have taken their turn. Id wager that Chan Kwok-kwan has nearly all of them beat on looks.
The 40-episode series is the latest attempt, among many since Bruce Lees death in 1973, to dramatize his life on screen. In addition to featuring Dacascos, who plays a Thai fighter, the cast includes Ray Park (STAR WARS 1 - THE PHANTOM MENACE) as Chuck Norris, Michael Jai White (UNDISPUTED 2) as Ali, prolific B-movie star Gary Daniels (CITY HUNTER), and former pro-wrestler Ernest The Cat Miller.
At first glance, I thought Dacascos might have been playing Dan Inosanto but I guess a nameless Tony Jaa-like character was their aim. A potentially good casting choice is White who I presume to be Mohammad Ali. White gave a solid performance as a heavyweight boxer in UNDISPUTED 2.
THE LEGEND OF BRUCE LEE began production in April of 2007 and is scheduled to begin airing in China later this year, in time for the Beijing Olympics.

Wow, i was blown away by the trailer. I can't wait to get my hands on this.
Who cares if they use a little wire work and stylized fighting, it looks amazing. If the technology is out there to make an outstanding series like this, use it. Especially if it glorifies one of our heroes.
There are alot of very hardcore Bruce fans out there who aren't going to like it because:
1. Bruce Lee isn't in it
2. There isn't any "real" fighting
Hey, there will never be another Bruce Lee. And if a company spends 6 million on a series about Bruce... thats good enough homage for me. The series is going to be solid, IMHO.

The money behind the project speaks volumes. We should expect at least something better than the old Bruce Li fare from the mid
70's. I'm still mad as hell about Dragon: The Linda Lee Story. This may turn out to be it's spinoff- The Legend of Linda Lee's 'Recollection' of Bruce Lee.

I too am a huge fan of Bruce Lee's but realized long ago that not everyone is, no biggie. I enjoy all of his contributions and that's what matters to me, I'm not trying to convince anyone else to share my feelings. Different strokes for different folks, etc. It's what makes the world go round. This is why I avoid the debates.
I'm looking forward to the tv series and I'm sure I'll find some enjoyment out of it, just like most of the projects on Lee, even the Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story film. I appreciate all current efforts from books, films, tv series on Lee. It introduces him to new audiences and keeps his legacy alive and active. There will never be "another" Bruce Lee, every person is unique. If I want to see Bruce, I'll watch one of his films, tv shows or documentaries containing footage on him, or wait on these newly discovered/released never before seen footage that seem to pop out every so often to get us drooling! I'm guilty of that, and it's all good! Bruce was the man, a man (human like us), made his mark, passed away, and has left a legacy in film and martial arts. I'm content.

POSTED BY WAY OF THE DRAGON- "Danny Chan looks a lot like Bruce Lee, but i agree with Morgoth he doesnt fight like him or show the power and energy Bruce Lee showed. I think though this might be a good series to show depth into Bruce's life, so Im really looking forward to seeing it."
The fights look pretty good, but yeah it's a shame they didn't get a better fighter to play Bruce, but I'll definitely check it out when it gets a region 1 release. Has anyone seen if Michael Jai White fights? (I didn't watch that whole fight clip on youtube because I didn't want to spoil too much).

While mildly interesting what makes this any different from the bruce lee rip off films of the 70's?
Its a shame that they have to put so much bullshit in, when his life was interesting enough without it?:l

The Legend of Bruce Lee (China TV Series) DVD 89.99
The amazing life and legacy of action icon Bruce Lee comes to the small screen in the 50-episode biopic drama The Legend of Bruce Lee. Known for his striking resemblance to Bruce Lee, Hong Kong actor Danny Chan Kwok Kwan from Stephen Chow's Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle steps into Lee's hallowed shoes for this highly anticipated drama.
More than just a Bruce Lee-lookalike, Chan, a former dance choreographer, holds his own in the series' many sparring scenes, bringing a raw physicality to his performance.
The 50 episode series (over a total of 17 DVDs) follows the 32 years of Bruce Lee's life, from his troublemaking youth as an actor and martial arts upstart in Hong Kong, to his life in the United States and development and mastering of his martial arts and philosophy, to his storybook rise to global fame in both the martial arts and movie-making worlds. The Legend of Bruce Lee also co-stars Wang Luoyong, Mark Dacascos, Gary Daniels and Michelle Lang as Bruce Lee's wife.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS DVD DOES NOT HAVE 100% ENGLISH SUBTITLES

I am yawning my way through this series. The pacing is very slow and the plot seems to be stuck with Ip Man training Bruce. It doesn't help that everyone is acting badly with deadpan expressions on their faces. I am now at episode 10......40 more to go.

The series is on Blu-Ray in Germany but I don't think that has English subtitles either. I am not sure if it warrants a purchase to own in High-Def without subs. I labored through it as much as I could but finally quit midway.

personally i have not seen this tv series nor do i intend to, why create an image of bruce lee that simply is not true !! this is disrespectful to bruce and another attempt by linda lee to sell her version of the lee legend

And i totally hate it.
Bad acting, terrible fight sequences. I think Danny Chan's career would be over if he had not been in Stephen Chow's movies before and still got a contract making more movies with Stephen. guessing here.
But i can not believe people writing this in IMDB (talk about nonsense)
Just finished watching the last episode (50) and wanted to add my twopenn'orth. Danny Chan portrays Bruce Lee to perfection - it's difficult to believe that this is not Bruce! Other characters are represented well, too. Ed Parker and Chuck Norris are particularly noteworthy, likeness and mannerisms are accurately portrayed. There appear to be parts that stray a little from other reports and biographies, but generally, the series seems to be pretty factual. The only reason I have only given a rating of 9 is that, for me, the story annoyingly jumps some (small) aspects of Bruce's life and what I consider as important details leading up to his death! As soon as I find time, I WILL watch this again and I am certain that it will be even better. It has rekindled my childhood interest in Bruce and I am currently reading everything that I can find about his life and work. I should add that I watched this in Chinese and understood most, but my wife was interpreter/translator for those parts that used more complex Chinese language. I hope that the Chinese speech is subtitled, and what 'should' be in English is dubbed, for release on foreign markets, since much of the character of the series would be lost if it were entirely in English!

it's unbearable. very hard to watch, the pacing is off. the actor is good, but from the fight scenes, to editing, to screenplay - it's just a big mess.
anyone who buys this dvd set would be greatly dissapointed. not a repeat viewing. heck, it's suffering from a single viewing by most people's standards.

Same here, but I truly trust the opinions of a lot of you guys. If it comes out with English subs, I'll probably check it out anyway, but it's good not to go in with big expectations. I knew it would just be another version of Linda Lee's "version" of Lee's life due to legal reasons, but I'd still hoped for the best within those constricting parameters. :S

yeah i was looking forward to that as well. seeing lee's art in a modern setting. but the editing was imo very bad choppy and jarring that you couldn't enjoy the scenes if you wanted to.
tony jaa's ong bak 2 at least kept the camera and editing tight, which was refreshing. they somehow missed that.
as for Lee's life it has alot of his stories in China that never really heard of. more than the typical Linda Lee bios we know all about. so that was different. but again, very hard to watch.

News | TV | by Mark Pollard | 2007.08.17
A teaser poster (see left) that is circulating on the net shows recognizable international martial arts stars Mark Dacascos, Michael Jai White, Ray Park, and Gary Daniels as part of the cast.Deadwood DVD (http://www.dvduz.com/Deadwood-DVD-The-Complete-Series-1-3-Box-Set-p-261.html)
CCTV is planning to air the series in 2008.
