View Full Version : Worst dub track?

Occasionally we come across dubbed kung fu movies that can only be described as appalling simply because the dubs are so awful. Whether it be nowhere near in sync or just plain ridiculous, sometimes it's just the action that keep these afloat.
Last night I watched "Duel of the Tao Tough." While the action was frantic and enjoyable and although the movie did take a ridiculous turn (flying snakes used as whips?) the dub track was simply awful.
From the wooden attempts at acting by the voice providers to the ridiculous language used it was hard to keep watching. A Shaolin abbot yells "Bullshit!" at an enemy, the main bad guy calls the lead hero "A bucket of bullshit" and the female lead professes her love by saying something like "I love you loads."
What are the worst dub tracks you've ever had to witness?

I don't know if you've ever seen Sun Dragon aka A Hard Way to Die, but it has one of the worst dubs ever. Those dudes sounded drunk the way they were slurring their words. The fights were great in this flick though.

SWORDSMAN WITH AN UMBRELLA is pretty bad, but I've yet to see anything quite as bad as WANG YU: THE DESTROYER.

Yea I was just gonna say this one too. Awesome fights though, best to watch it with the sound off. Also "Abbott White" has a really bad dub job, it's dubbed over the original soundtrack so you can hear the actual dialogue under the dubbing.
Fist of Fury 2 with Bruce Li, or as the Western version is know, the Chinese Connection 2 had a horrible dub. Some many scenes where the actors continue to speak but the dub is nowhere around! It was the same group that did most of Li's flicks.

Judging by the appeal I can never listen to the anti-oldschool produced dubs for the HKL-DVD's. Many of those dub tracks are ugly and sound like anime-dubs. Young Master and Odd Couple are two examples out of many.

I've got one that makes all these examples sound like Orson Welles reading Shakespeare by comparison. I'll have it uploaded shortly.

All of those dubs on the old Korean KF films get me, terrible. And who can forget Nine Demons with Gary and Joey lol.
I hate those newer US dubs which sound like anime as well which someone already mentioned.

NINE DEMONS is a classic. I don't have time now but maybe I'll post a clip from another classic bad dub later, not the worst but perhaps my all-time favorite.

Lost Swordship is horrible. Every voice is bad, but some are really bad. The fat guy who lives in the cave sounds like a cowboy. And ditto what Dragonherb said. Those Fortune Star dubs are some of the worst.

LOL,I hate to say it but that Hidden Darts dub is pretty damn funny, especially when that old man calls the Emperor an SOB!:p Edit: I see you've already deleted it Diagoro, what happened? You shouldn't have, it was hilarious!

Most of them are a bit shit... so it's hard to narrow down.
But the no budget indies do seem to suffer especially.
That ABBOT WHITE clip is classic though: "I RISH to go up the tower"(!?!)
Hang on: I just remembered my worst dub.

I also saw Hidden Darts! By far the most amateur dub job I have ever heard. I remember the movie was horrible, but I had to keep watching to hear what the next line of dialogue was going to be.
Lightening Kung Fu and Kickboxer staring Yuen Biao with the Sho Nuff sounding dubb for Yuen Wah

Anyone got a clip?
You won't believe your ears!!
Well Sun Dragon and Abbot White has been mentioned... Another vile one would be Filthy Guy. The dubbing disrupted my whole memory of that movie so all i can think of is how bad that particular dub was.
And another horrid one that comes to mind is Black and White Swordsman.

I just watched Black and White Swordsman the other day, I didn't find the dubbing that bad. I also watched 99 Cycling Swords I think the dub on that one was worse, it sounded like they were reading thier dialogue as they went on.

Its all over the place! Like they didn't even try holding the sound effects as they dubbed! But the weirdest thing is that it sounds recent, it doesn't sound muffled like older dubs.

I like it sometimes when they use Chinese actors to dub the English voices, but Abbot White is just horrible. Luckily the story isn't that good, because I couldn't understand much of what was being said.

hahahahahahaha, that abbott white clip was amazing.
The rarescope DVD for Tony Jaa's Battle Warrior has one of the worst dubs I ever heard.

Abbot White and Drunken Fist Boxing are 2 poor dubs only matched by the poorness of the films!
Other poor dubs
Thundering Mantis
Crystal Fist
Dubs with needless expletives
Legend of a fighter
Ninja in the dragons den
Hellz Windstaff
Tiger on the beat
I have to disagree about the Drunken Master Dub- Thats a classic! The HKL contains disc contains the wrong dub

Was watching 60 Second Assassin last night. Good dub, but then Leung Kar Yan starts screaming in the final fight. that didn't work for me at all.

Those Johnny come lately dubbers for latter day shaws like Five Element Ninjas and Flag of Iron. Sounds like either one person or two brothers who love each other very much, and hideously awful to boot

I prefer dubbing to subtitles (I know), but even I couldn't take the dubbing in SHAOLIN INVINCIBLE STICKS - just horrible, strident, head splitting, ear bleeding vocals from one of the characters...
I also am not a fan of recent attempts at dubbing. Can't be sure, but I think NINJA IN THE DRAGON'S DEN had new dubbing on the U.K. DVD - didn't care for it at all - too much obscenity for no good reason...

The first time I watched Two Champions of Shaolin I counted at least 6 "but stills" I need to watch again because I think there were even more "listen" 's
I hate it when a character's voice changes, like the scene changes and then another voice actor is doing the same guy's voice. Carter Wong's character in Born Invincible for example.

Wait'll I start on my "Shaolin vs. Ninja" installments!
Another candidate for worst ever, plus plenty of voice changes, most within the same scene!
My personal pick off the top of my head is the previously mentioned "Drunken Fist Boxing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mm-p12cnHg)".
I'll also nominate "Raging Masters of Tiger Crane." Now that I brought that one up, I gotta do a "Chop-Sucky" for that quickly and show you guys here!

Worst I've ever heard is "In Sword We Trust." It borders on Mystery Science 3000 territory in that it seems that the dubbers are intentionally trying to make it a joke. Plus, there are no background sounds when they are talking, so it sounds just like 3 or 4 people in a room reading a script with no attempt at making it sound good. I think the same can be said for any of these films recently put out by Jalisco, although I don't want to waste 10 seconds on them to find out.

Is that movie In Sword We Trust in one of those Jet Li Videoasia collections? I remember the characters had names like Kung Fu Wong, Jackie Chan, Timothy, Julio.. And the villain was named John Woo.

This (and the Drunken Fist Boxing) sounds exactly like some of the old Ultraman VCD's and DVD's I have, Ultraman 80, Ultraman Ace and Ultraman Taro, all dubbed in English by Malaysians. Very hard to watch.
Rican, looking forward to your Shaolin V Llama coverage.

I think that's a 1980s original, and its a fave of mine. Love how Tai Bo sound just like Winnie The Pooh!

The worst dub I've heard was for the movie "Jackie and the 36 Crazy Fists". The sound quality was horrible, and the voice didn't match lip movement. Not the mention the movie didn't even star Jackie Chan in it even though the DVD case says it does. A bad movie with a really really bad dub. The only good part was the end fight, and not even that was that great. That dub still haunts me, *shudders* I had a headache 4 minutes into it just because of how bad the dub was.

The worst dub I've heard was for the movie "Jackie and the 36 Crazy Fists".
Now, I'm assuming this is the original English dub [which I have on a dollar-bin Jackie Chan "Triple Feature" DVD along with "The Young Master" and "Fantasy Mission Force"], because the Ocean Shores version had a different one, with the movie retitled "The Master and the Boxer." (I'd love to get that second one in order to start on video clips.) They're both hilarious in their awfulicity. That first one had lines like, "You are a kung few poopil" and "It's a free country"/"No, it's not!" and the second one gave everybody utterly STUPID names like Super Chao, Eagle Pong, Dagger Wong, William Dong, and my favorite, Double Wang.
By the way, Jackie did the choreography for this film, which naturally means his billing will be elevated to TOTALLY STARRING...!!

Yeah, it's the first one. I remember that line where he tells the guy that it was a free country. I guess that guy was supposed to be Beggar Su or something. He was such a ripoff of the Simon Yuen character from Drunken master, and he wasn't even that good. The fights were the only good thing I guess, but they weren't that great though. The best part for me was when they killed the bad guy at the end. It was so hilarious how they killed him by kicking him in the ass repeatedly. Totally bad and funny movie, but it was a gift so I'm not complaining..it's a somewhat nice add to my collection xD

one of the worst if not the worst dub that I have ever seen and heard if from a fantastic movie call The Kickboxer with Yuen Biao, the movie awesome the dubbing is so bad that is almost ruins the movie. it sound the the guys who are dubbing it have no script, it sounds like they are making up the script as the are going along. the opening scene sticks out in my head the most and I saw this movie about 13 years ago and haven't seen it since. (it is out of circulation) it is a turn of the century piece and they are in a pawn shop and the camera pans across and you hear 2 dudes having a conversation and the one guy goes who do you think will win tonight the Lakers or the Suns. WHAT THE PHUK I tell you no lies if you find this movie pick it up the actual movie is awesome, Yuen gets the gold shoes and kicks some ass, the dubbing is really really bad.

For a modern martial art movie, the abosute worst dub I've ever heard was the one for CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON! I don't know who they got or where the accents are from, but I couldn't get through 20 mins of it!

Back to that Abbot White clip... I just realized that the voice shouting "You don't have to say anything... I tell you, HE KILLED THEM!" is a voice actor I've heard in Cantonese dubs! I know he did Roy Horan's voice in the Cantonese version of Tower of Death along with other films. Didn't know he dabbled in English dubs too. Hmm, interesting.

Rican, just watched Shaolin v Ninja, looking forward to your take on it. The guy dubbing for that Japanese guy with the Hitler mustache has the longest mid sentence pauses I've heard!
Bronx Rican
09-25-2009, 09:37 PM
I only recently realized that mustache guy was Sun Shu Pei (Lin Kuang in Five Venoms, "Long Axe" in Golden Arm)! I just thought that was cool.
I can't wait to do "Shaolin v. Ninja"; it's classic bad, and there are two different dubs on it that both need highlighting. My problem is, there's an important scene missing in my copy, and I may have to get my friend's old tapes out of storage to get it. All that means is, the clips may not happen soon. It's a scene just after Lo Rei's first fight with that ninja assassin, where the head ninja goes, "Failed? You IMBE-CILES!"
I had to hold off on Fatal Needles/Fatal Fists for the same reason. Tell me I'm not crazy, because I clearly recall a scene (that's NOT in the Tai Seng DVD) where the large henchman says, "This is my master. Wants everything big. A big bed, a big girl, big bathroom. Everything must be BIG!!"
P.S.: Where has Wu Tang Champ vs. Champ BEEN all my life?!?
