Wether it was the wink in a girls eye that sparkled as she spoke that struck-me dumb, the way that Korean girl smiled as she walked
away, the heat within a thriller, the complexity of tones woven into the action or the highs and lows of some sweeping drama - upon
reflection I will never remember exactly what it was that caught my attention first. One thing I do know is that I am a fan now of the
world of Korean Cinema. It's too late for me but for you it might not be so turn back while you still can. That is of course unless you
hope to learn more. Still there? If you are what i hope to provide is a view for you. Most people are in the dark when it comes to Korean
films. There probably will not be many to read or even comment on any of my reviews because most people have no idea what these
films are about. Still I do offer you a view, and that is what it is, a view a ''peek'' at what it's like - but let me tell you now and you can
see that i wrote it if ever that one day comes and you discover it for yourself. That view, could never be as beautiful as the view you
would have yourself if only you opened the window. For fans of Japanese films or "Strictly" Chinese films i urge to relax your sword
hands. Drop down from the shadows loosen you black belts, burn your secret manuals full of passwords and codes. It's time to
acknowledge the new kid on the block. Don’t fret even though they do come in force they are hardly ever armed with anything more
than a smile. Korean films are wonderful i hope you will enjoy my reviews. And now without further ado Be Strong, Geum-soon! (2002) - 굳세어라 금순아

This is the story of Geum-soon. Guem-soon (Bae Doona (배두나), Take Care of my Cat, Sympathy for Mr.Vengeance) who used to be a famous volleyball
player in the woman’s division of Korea. Earning herself the honor and praise by fans (Guem-soon! Guem-soon!) and having been rewarded many times
in her sparkling rise to the top of woman’s v-ball. Soon we learn her rise is almost as quick as her fall. While landing, after having spiked the ball she acci-
dentally slips and injures her shoulder. She is forced to hang up her jersey (#8) and sadly she retires. Soon we find Guem-soon has also received one more
thing nobody expects but everyone cannot help but love, A Baby. She cries more than the baby it'self in fact im not sure who was more adorable but still she
finds that courage and soon in another way she finds herself rising to the top again, this time with love. Her husband Joon-Tae (played by Kim Tae-woo
(김태우), struggling filmmaker in ''Woman is the future of man") attempts to put some order but soon we learn that he outrivals both his wife and his child
in the hissy-fit olympics after Guem-soon burns his shirt accidentally while ironing it for his first day of work.
Despite what seem like fledgling begginings of a naive younger couple they seem inseperabley bound by the very bonds brought them together. Love. It is
not all full of stripes in banners itself as for example when Miss. Guem-soon (Bae Doona (배두나) falls asleep with her child in her arms and accidentally
slams head first into the child who was sound asleep. The Cries she soon hears is definitely not like the cries from her adoring fans but don’t worry it only
gets worse. As we soon find out the Comedy and Adventure is only beggining. Be Strong, Geum-soon! (2002) - 굳세어라 금순아 aka Saving My Hubby.
Late at night after her husband's first day of work, she receives a phone call from a bar owner who is keeping her husband hostage, claiming that he
owes a $1700 drinking bill. Strapping her baby to her back, Geum-soon goes out to rescue. This is when the movie really starts. While trying to find the
bar according to the zip-snap instructions the bars owners scam-evil-cohort rattles off to her, baby on her back pink credit card in her pink converse shoes
she sets of into the Neon lit night of Korea's Red Light district to find her hubby.
Soon by accident or by mishap it seems that everyone is after Geum-soon (Bae Doona (배두나) (baby strapped to her back) she runs the streets aimless
and breathless dodging her pursuers, a mysterious figure who appears to be stalking her and soon the mob. Amongst the turmoil, between catching her
breath and changing her babies diaper she finds some solace from homeless people living in squalor and a mom and pop restaurant who's owners
welcome her with warmth. What was to follow would soon seem like Guem-soon's greatest quest. It seems that nothing including the challenging heights
of her V-ball career could have prepared the young and lovely Guem-soon for this. We soon learn how fast people shine, sparkling and resilience is not
neccesarily only to be found in a Jersey or the V-Ball court.
It seems she leaves everyone in the dust due to her health (thanks to v-ball!) she also uses her hauntingly precise ability to smack down people to the
ground or into the air (they fall and flail like the people in the matrix) with her hand when she decides to take her stand. Guem-soon what will happen to
Guem-soon What of the mysterious figure who appears to be stalking her? Will she ever be able to find her husband? His parents are on the way to meet
her for the first time and she's left the water boiling in the pot! It's a race to the finish. Be Strong, Geum-soon!
This movie the directorial debut of Hyen Nam-Seop (현남섭) was definitely a smash unfortunately just as the people who play the young couple in the
film it as they also had it's fledgling beginnings. In mid October of 2002 when the movie has a brief 3-4 week run it was not even seen or had not come
to the full appreciation of the fans. Hit or miss it was not until Enter One who who released it on DVD when fans around the world got to see what they
were missing. Great film, turns your seat at home into a seat on a thrill ride at the amusement park, if not that then it will surely leaving you laughing or
on the edge of your seats. More of a character driven movie than plot but the plot was in all the right places as was the cast. It was interesting to see
the Showdown of Mob Bosses one of which was played by Joe Hyson (주현) who also played a mob boss in My wife is a Gangster 2 and The Customer
is always right. Many will recognize Bae Doo-an (배두나), literal translation in korean: beautiful star) that plays Geum-sum from ''The Host''.
As one fan seemed to have put himself explaining how he felt when he saw it (and i quote) "This movie is Guaranteed not to suck''. Although we may
never know if that persons powers of description are actually infinitely enlightening, (he could of been in a hurry) a labyrinthine a honeycomb if you will
from where his glowing unveiling waves of insight would just flow we do know he was definitely not a liar. Well probably...
(facts on Bea Doo-Na compilation source her modeling agency)
Bae was first discovered by a model talent agency fresh after University in 1998. She modeled for a couple of clothing lines before making a debut in
acting in 1999. She first appeared in the KBS TV drama "School". And the rest, as they say, is history - check out the impressive filmography. Bae's
mother is an accomplished stage actress Kim Hwa-young. Bae loves photography and has published a photo book entitled Doo-na's London Play (2006).
