GOOD OLD SKOOL FLIX:

Those that are in the 7/10 league are:

1. Daggers 8 – 7/10

2. The Leg Fighters – 7/10

3. Crazy Horse Intelligent Monkey - 7/10

4. Flashlegs 7/10

5. The Dragon The Here – 7/10 – Good movie, just beware of the Dog Man!

AVERAGE KUNG FU FLIX:

1. 36 Deadly Styles - 5/10

2. World Of Drunken Master - 5/10

3. Iron Monkey – Chen Kwan Tai – 6/10

4. The Traitorous – 6/10

8. The Green Jade Statuette – 6/10

POOR KUNG FU MO

1. Dragons Claw

2. Monkey Kung Fu

3. Death Dual Of Mantis

4. The Master With Cracked Fingers

THE WORST EVER KUNG FU FLIX!

The WORST Kung Fu flick of ALL time goes too:

1. Invincible Kung Fu Trio – If you ever see this title at a store – RUN as fast as you can in the opposite direction! An save yourself!

2. Ninja vs Ninja - This one is so bad that they had to take footage from four different movies to make one film, there's almost no fighting in it, and they use music from 'Close Encounters Of The Third Kind' and 'Blade Runner' in it. Truly a monstrosity to behold... in fact, I have to go as far as to say it's the worst film i've ever seen... even more so than 'Manos: The Hands Of Fate' or 'Soul Of Chiba.' (Clan Member: DrunkenCrane082)

Can anyone think of any other titles that deserve to be in the above three categories of 9/10, 8/10 and 7/10?

Like I said, all titles with ratings of 8/10 or higher are the must haves in your collection!

However I found the following titles rather dull, and boring fight scenes. Definetly not worthy of the best of all time.

Iron Monkey (great costumes, boring fights)
Crystal Fist (a poor mans Drunken Master)
The Traitorous (yeah was ok)
Daggers 8 (over rated, good but not the best)

To clarify to me fellow clan members, only titles with scores of 8/10 and higher are classed amongst the greatest old skool movies of all time.

Anything below 8/10 are only above average kung fu flix in my opinion. I agree with fellow clan member Vlade to some extent, but to list Crystal Fist amongst 7/10 titles is just disrespectful!

Your lucky my sidekick Fatty Karate doesnt read this forum, or else he would have come looking for you to give you a taste of his Fried Chicken Fist technique, for making a comment like that!

But ALL titles of 8/10 and above are simply must haves!

I take it this is a list of non-Shaw Brothers flicks? What about a Bruce Lee movie? I think Shaolin Vs Lama should be in the top 10.

Warriors Two- usually movies you guys recomend kinda suck, but his one I totally agree. Excellent Film

Mystery of Chess Boxing-the best pure kung fu film.

Prodigal Son

Shaolin vs Lama

Way of the Dragon

Fist of Fury

Shaolin Temple

Snake in Eagles Shadow

On a side note I can't stand Drunken Master for the first 30 minutes.

Snake and Crane Arts of Shaolin

Knockabout--great great great does everything right!!!

Ninja vs Shaolin Guards- Im gonna get crap for this but these guys are good martial artists no matter what you say. Some of the movies you guys watch and say are good really suck. for example meng fei, david chang, wei pai, and I still don't really like Chen Kuan Tai

Hot, cool, vicious

Crippled Avengers

Chinatown Kid

Chinese Super Ninjas

36th Chamber of Shaolin

Shaolin vs Wutang

Mad Monkey Kung Fu

Not to get off track with the thread but I had to ask: Are you saying that the last 7 Movies you listed are the ones that suck(in addition to the actors mentioned) or just movies with those actors? Could you elaborate? :)

punt44
07-08-2005, 01:10 AM
excuse me,

I mean those actors really sucked and several of there movies do as well, but Chen Kuan Tai has a lot of merit. HIs film the Gold Constable was one of the best films I have seen, but the martial arts sucks its just sword swinging and I don't like movies where he is a martial artists snore. The rest of those guys are pretty boys and Meng Fei has man tits-Invincible Kung Fu Trio

i have only skim read this post

but aren't we missing....

Buddhist Fist - watch it tomorrow if you've never seen it!!!!!

other honourable mentions:
Seven Grand Masters
Shaolin Temple series (Jet Li)
Shaolin vs Wu Tang
Last Hurrah for Chivalry
Dance of Drunken Mantis
Drunken Tai Chi
The Odd Couple / Dirty Tiger, Crazy Frog
Dreadnought

plus Jackie stuff after DM - Fearless Hyena, Young Master / Dragon Lord

I'm not suggesting all of these are 'great movies' but probably worth throwing into the discussion

plus - completely agree with the comments on Mystery of Chess Boxing - pure kung fu...

Some Memorable old school flicks have been mention. I'll just say if someone who is not familiar with Martial arts flicks ask me for an old school recommendation, the first one that comes to mind is Shaolin vs. Lama or Magnificent Butcher Go rent it, buy it, and so on. Maybe I'll pop in Shaolin Temple or The Loot for them.

I'm sorry, but Mystery of Chess Boxing is nothing but a cheap "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow" rip-off. Lee Yi-Min is a dumb-faced retard ;) .

And Shaolin vs. Lama, although it has some good fights, isn't that great. I mean the budget (costumes) is terrible, the leads suck and the direction weak.

Buddha bless SB!!! :D

Whatever dude, sounds like someone has a hard-on for Shaw Brothers flicks with their big budgets. Snake in the Eagle's shadow is good, but the kung fu in Mystery of Chess Boxing surpasses it in everyway. The music is also excellent for this film and workes perfectly. The final is also way longer and better executed. your not watching for the sets, the actors, the comedy, the budget, the corny special effects, your looking for totally unhibited kung fu acrobatic action. I have seen like that could compare to this film.

sounds like someone has a hard-on for Shaw Brothers flicks with their big budgets
You bet your ass! I have like a hard-on like everytime I like see the Shaw Brothers like logo :rollin

your not watching for the sets, the actors, the comedy, the budget, the corny special effects, your looking for totally unhibited kung fu acrobatic action

If elaborate sets were the only thing indy KF flix didn't have, then Shaw Brothers would NEVER be the juggernaught it was.

Apart from horrible budgets, shitty/annoying actors, lack of a screenplay, for the most part indies have really amateurish direction. SB had charismatic actors, good screenplays AND REAL directors.

Anyway, this is why The Hot, the Cool and the Vicious is such an outstanding movie. Actors are charismatic, there actually is a plot and the direction is well done.

You are missing a lot of great kung fu movies, if you only watch Independent films or just Shaw Brothers or even major studio releases. I think to get the best of all Kung Fu movies you have to be open minded to all...

To me the greatest Kung Fu movie I ever saw was To Kill a Mastermind and yes it is a Shaw Brothers release... But to say Shaw Brothers is the best would have to be what you yourself like the most.. Different strokes for different folks...

I am a Big Shaw Brothers fan!!! But if I only watched Shaw Brothers movies then look up this post and look at all the great kung fu movies I would be missing!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you Justkungfuman, there are lot of good independant movies like The Victim, The Loot,Eagle Fist
and others. Thre are also some sleppers like Blooded Treasury Fight, Deadly Silver Spear and Heroes of Shaolin.I hope To Kill
a Mastermind lives up to the hype like Hell's Windstaff and Knockabout not like The Secret Rivals or Death Duel of Kung Fu , in my opinion. That is just my opinion.

Violento

I never said I watch ONLY SB films - "The Loot", "7 Steps of Kung Fu", "The Hot, the Cool and the Vicious", "Secret Rivals" are all my favorites.

I've seen "Blooded Treasury Fight" and while DC is charismatic and cool as always and Dorian Tan's kicks amazing, it didn't really impress me.

Oh and I've recently seen "Descendant of Wing Chun" with Fung Hak-On and Lee Hoi-San as the villains. The fights were good, but like most indies it had 2 problems: leads not charismatic and mediocre direction. Oh and the dubbing was even worse than "7 Steps of Kung Fu" (which was atrocious :\ ).
- Mao Lung, you spit on the name of justice!
- Justice? Shiiiat!

:rollin

I HAVE to finally get Hell's Windstaff...

TheDrunkenRabbit
07-16-2005, 12:05 AM
"The Loot" is a great Dim sum and fried Noodles layback. The Dubbing dose kill the quality of the flicks sometimes, but doesn’t stop the enjoyment of action. Did someone mention 18 Bronzemen? I love this flick because we always get a laugh out of the extremist acts in it.

I would have to put some of Jimmy Wang Yu's early stuff in there, such as the One Armed Boxer, Chinese Professionals, Master of the Flying Guillotine, Beach of the War Gods. His martial arts skills were mediocre, but he had great screen presence and and made entertaining movies.

Nice pics. You got to get one where DC is in the monkey stance and the other guy is pounding his chest like Tarzan.

Chen Zhen

there are lots of great indie films with great direction, charismatic leads, etc. all you have to do is dig a bit deeper. to me, the budget, direction, etc is absolutely irrelevant to me. cuz at the end of the day, it comes down to one thing: is the movie enjoyable to watch or not. ive seen a few shaw/gh movies with huge budgets, but that doesnt make them good. a movie like 7 grandmasters has a nearly non existent budget, however i rank that movie easily in my top 10 from not just the fights, but everything else. indie filmakers were always more willing to take risks in movies, especially someone like Jimmy Wang Yu or Yuen Woo Ping. by all standards, wang yu movies were cheesy, but many of them had great fights, memorable characters, and interesting stories...such as master of the flying guillotine or return of the chinese boxer.

shaw movies are hyped up to the point where ppl overlook the fact that are are some straight sh*tty shaw movies...yes they do exist. in the end it comes down to where u look...indie/gh/shaw all had its fair share of shite movies, while they all had their share of good ones.

anywayz..my list at the moment:

7 Grandmasters
Mystery of Chessboxing
Heroes of the East
Dance of the Drunk Mantis
Drunken Master
Master of the Flying Guillotine
Magnificent Butcher
Prodigal Son
Fist of Fury
Knockabout
Dirty Ho
Shaolin and Wu Tang
Iron Monkey
Drunken Tai Chi

hey ninja,
as bad as "invincible kung fu trio" may be {i have yet to see it, and will buy it as soon as i find it}, i think the absolute worst martial arts movie i've ever come across was a $1.00 treasure i spotted at walmart called "ninja vs. ninja". this one is so bad that they had to take footage from four different movies to make one film, there's almost no fighting in it, and they use music from "close encounters of the third kind" and "blade runner" in it. truly a monstrosity to behold....in fact, i have to go as far as to say it's the worst film i've ever seen.....even more so than "manos: the hands of fate" or "soul of chiba".

This is in response to Punt44's ignorant remarks... Mystery Of Chess Boxing w/ Lee Yi Min (who has seen far better days performing in kung fu films). I have this movie, and have gone through hundreds of these mediocre, boring, fake/over-choreographed fight sequenced, films that may or may not have any, if one or two actors who can actually act, even in them. But who can blame extras (that's all these characterless actors are) for not even given a chance, for want of any type of storyline and ad-lib dialogue, where almost all these no-name wanna be's just goof off with anyhow. It's been so long since I've actually tortured myself with viewing such trash, that I don't rightly remember if Chang Yi, (one of the greats, along with the immortal, Chen Kuan Tai-who was actually KING BOXER OF SOUTHERN CHINA before even performing in these films-only a retard who did not know what they were talking about would ditch Chen Kuan Tai, Punt44!) actually shamed himself with appearing in such a weak picture! Punt44, you are a babbling fool! You have so much to learn about realism in kung fu cinema. :evil

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
posted the below intro to Forum earlier this week, and I was directed to this forum. I like what I see....

I'm fairly new to this community; however, I am an old school kung fu movie fan since I was very young. One who believes that the best of the Genre was from 73 - 79, with a few exceptions of course. I have been going through the past communications about the best movies of all time, and though there are some valid selections, there were also a few mentions of barely-average movies being in the "best movie" category. First of all, no top ten is complete without Invincible Armor, Oath of Death, Born Invincible, Swordsman of All Swordsman, and Secret Rivals 2. Am I crazy here?
By the way, those valid selections were Dual to the Death, 8 Diagram Pole Fighter and Snake in the Eagle Shadow...

My Top 10.

10. Enter the Dragon, just because - he has to have one in the top 10 - right?
9. Secret Rivals 2
There more action in this film than I have seen in 3 highly regarded classics combined.
8. Seven Grand Masters
A none-stop entertainment, with a story.
7. Legend of a Fighter
Good story, well choreographed fight scenes
6. Duel to the Death
Not the biggest swordplay fan, however, this is a top notch movie
5. Snake in the Eagle Shadow
Clearly his Best and most pure Kung Fu Film, I do not like comedy in my Kung Fu.
4. Swordsman of All Swordsman
A rare classic (it's difficult to find a high quality copy, good luck).
Needs no explanation or support.
3. Invincible Armor
2. Oath of Death
1. Born Invincible

10. Notable mentions:( maybe 11-20)
36 Chambers of Shaolin
Warriors 2.
Prodigal Son
Last Hurrah of Chivalry
Mystery of Chess boxingVictim
8-Diagram Pole Fighters
Victim
Drunken Master
Wu Tang Clan
Spearmen of Death

Bring in on....

Yeah, I'm gonna have to revisit 'Born Invincible' too, as it's been a while. I'm afraid I've never seen 'Prodigal Son'. It being the number one pick and all, I need to check that out ASAP. What's the best version out there? Same goes with 'The Loot', but that's on another recently opened thread. And what about 'Warriors Two'? I've seen a lot of mixed reviews about that one.

Ran down to BestBuy on Tuesday and picked up 'Prodigal Son' for the insanely lowwwwww price of $6.99. Thanks Fortune Star! I'll watch it this weekend. Now I'm on the hunt for some of these other classics that have escaped me over the years. Got my eye out for 'Warriors Two'.

My want list and movie watching cue are both getting out of control. I grew up watching a lot of these when I was a kid (I'm an old man now, heh) on Saturday afternoon's 'Kung Fu Theater' & then 'Ninja Theater: Hosted by Sho Kosugi', and now it's time to recapture my youth...and classics from my favorite film genre.

As you can probably see here that i am an old schooler from the 42nd street(n.y) days of the 80's where we saw these movies shortly after there releases,no disrespect to the jet li fans and the new schoolers but with all the special effects that the new age has brought on it just ain't the same. Also I've seen some of sammo hungs films and i admit that the technique's marvelous however the onslaught of overbearing comedy was something left to be desired ie: prodigal son, magnificient butcher great technique but tooo much foolishness.Comedy ain't bad all the time but in this case it was as with "my young auntie" great cast but you talk about bad costumes and just straight up corny! how the hell do you put gordon liu in some @#%$ like this ,shame on you shaw brothers.

Legend of a Fighter

SnowyWhite
11-03-2006, 01:49 AM
Some good films listed, many of which I would put in a personal list. I can't see the point of listing more than 10 in a list of 'greatest' though.

I would not put any of Jackie Chan's filsm in a list of 'greatest old school' kung fu films. Mainly because, for me, kung fu means kung fu. Not kung fu comedy, or swordplay (although understand that weapons based kung fu films count, but not the wuxia style, like Duel To The Death for example).

My top 10 list would be (in no Particular order):

King Boxer
Legendary Weapons of Kung Fu
Legend of a Fighter
The Prodigal Son
Kung Fu Genius
The Killer
Snake Deadly Act
The Odd Couple
36th Chamber of Shaolin
Shaolin and Wu-Tang

I would like to make a point though that I have not seen a fair few of the films people have suggested in their own lists.
Living in the UK is a real problem for kung fu film fans. :(

Fav ever is Legend of a Fighter

Shaolin Vs. Lama
Shaolin Intruders
Chinese Connection
Killer Constable
Young Master
Ninja in the Dragon's Den
Seven Grandmasters
Avenging Eagle
Secret Rivals
Shaolin Challenges Ninja
Kid With the Golden Arm
Cripled Avengers
Dance of the Drunken Mantis

Knockabout
Prodigal Son
Warriors Two
World Of Drunken Master
36th Chamber of Shaolin

You can solve that problem in the UK by purchasing a region-free player and just ordering the Celestial DVDs from Hong Kong. I have done so in America...

It is a movie in which a master who spit a lot trained his pupil by making him push a millstone, and another trained by jumping out of pits of water.

I like your list, however, for the best of all time you cannot exclude ANY Shaws, for they made the best films overall. I'd like to add to your list my personal alltime favorite old school kung fu movies with a shortened list, my personal top five. Tell me what you think, everyone...

1.) The 36TH Chamber of Shaolin

2.) Fist of Fury

3.) Drunken Master

4.) Legend of A Fighter

5.) Master of The Flying Guillotine

I believe this list is as great a top 5 you will ever see. My selections are based in facts of how each film effected the genre, all in different ways: from choreography, ( Bruce Lee in Fist of Fury), to story, ( Legend of A Fighter), special effects/gimmicks, ( Master of The Flying Guillotine), new stylized focus on S8) haolin, ( The 36TH Chamber), and new elemental martial arts technique/training, ( Drunken Master).
I bet there has been few who walked away from each of these films feeling somewhat changed after first viewings, especially, Master of The Flying Guillotine and Drunken Master!
As a kid leaving the theater, everyone was emulating Drunken Fist, The Flying Guillotine was forever etched in our consciousness, we suffered through each chamber right along with Gordon Liu, we never quite had a story and action parallel such as Legend of a Fighter, and who'd thought a Chinese guy could be as cool and kick arse like Bruce Lee: the Japanese found that " ...The Chinese are NOT the 'sick men of Asia'!

This must be the hardest question of all time for a Kung Fu movie fanatic because there are so many good flicks, but one things for sure, Snake in Eagles Shadow and Drunken Master are in the list along with Fist of Fury. This is almost scientific fact for the genre. I wish there was a theater that would play the list back to back and the fans can sit down and watch the greatest in action while eating dumplings & noodles.

I just bought and saw the Cotton Mill, I enjoyed it very much. It had a spectacular finale and great production values for an independent feature, but why is it in your top ten? AND ABOVE DRUNKEN MASTER NO LESS!

drunken master would not be even in my top#30..it does not have any build up of tension, just moving from one action scene to another(but they are very well made).Snake in the eagles shadow I would prolly choose into often changing:p top5,it`s jackie at his best.watched it last nite 108th time, timeless classic.

Having just joined up and looking through all your posts, I agree with most of them. A couple of questions: Are Billy Chong movies actually that good? Ive heard loads about them but never got one. Also is 7 Grandmasters really that good?

A couple of movies I would include to the already extensive lists are ones which I will be reviewing for the HK and cult film news website.

Shaolin Plot. Huang Feng directed Sammo action directed with Chen Sing and Casanova Wong, choreography is up there with Warriors 2, et al

Revenge of the Shaolin Master. being a huge admirer of the man Tan Tao Liang, this really lives up to the billing of Yuen Woo Ping action choreography. Constant action, every fight is brilliant

Look out for the views of both coming soon!

chrystal fist is really good.and billy is taught by our rednose Simon Yuen, worth getting definitely:D
Kung-Fu zombie was ghastly IMO but bet I there are people around who love it.
about 7 grandmasters..Well I dun rate it that high.Story is extremely thin, acting sucks, costumes and sets look cheap. But if you do not care about those then it`s your film.there is lots of fighting and really well made.

American names of my favorite old school Kung Fu Films (so far):

The Five Masters of Death - David Chiang, Ti Lung, Fu Sheng
Queen Boxer - Chia Ling (aka Judy Lee)
Ten Tigers from Kwantung - venoms plus Ti Lung
Two Champions of Shaolin - venoms
Shaolin Rescuers - venoms
Magnificant Ruffians - venoms
Stranger From Shaolin - Wong Hang Sau
Killer Bs - Hsia Kwan Lee (famous female high-kicker)
Wu Tang Death Squad - Barry Tze, Chan Wing Bo
Return of the Dragon - Bruce Lee
Enter the Dragon - Bruce Lee
Lady Whirlwind - Angela Mayo Ying
Dragon Inn & other films - Carter Wong, Polly Shang Kwan Lee Fung

Just purchased Shaw Brothers 'Killer Army' on DVD and I understand that Kuo Chui (aka Philip Kwok) was in charge of the action. I allowed a friend to view it first (he begged me) so I'll have to wait a couple days to view it.

So Far the only person to mention Wu Tang Death Squad. And Ninja vs Ninja is not the worst film. Nine Demons has that honor.

You need to tell me which movie you would remove and what shaw movie you would replace it with. The list was not meant to be nostalgic I was considering the actual fight coreagraphy that is why there are no Kurosawa movies here. Even though movies like 36 chambers and the 5 deadly venoms have cool stories the fighting is not better then the movies I mentioned above. I may be wrong about 36th chamber though.

Mystery of Chessboxing
7 Grandmasters
Iron Monkey
Prodigal Son

side note: i think shaolin vs lama is an good film, but i dont think it deserves a "greatest of all time" spot.

special mention go to:
South Shaolin Master...choreography of Brandy Yuen, with some of the best oldskool cinematography ive ever seen. probably the best mainland chinese film ive ever seen.

Na my friend definite (fail) on this one! Shaolin vs Llama definately belongs in the greatest of all time top Ten. Choreography and action is some of the best seen on camera ever. 8 Diagram Pole Fighter is Gordon Liu second best movie of his career. You are definately a minority with that comment.

You must have been drunk when you posted this comment so I will excuse your foolishness. Shaolin vs Llama is one of the best kung fu movies of all time period!!!!!!! This is agreed upon by most of the serious collectors on THE PLANET! That goes for mystery of Chess Boxing as well. The choreography and action in both movies are insane and some of the best captured on film. I question your movie rating ability. Are you a serious collector?

Na bro, some of the movies you listed sucked or was very avg. The Evil cult, The Sonny Chiba movie, sleeping fist not that great, Drunken Master only the last 35 minutes, 18 Bronzemen not that great.

You couldn't name 20 independent movies better than Shaolin vs Llama. Like I said you would definately be in a minority. I have lived in three large states across the nation and have found this movie mentioned in top 20 in all circles of serious collectors. Some of the movies people are mentioning can't hold a candle to Shaolin vs Llama. Some of the movies mentioned are garbage or average at best.

Arguing like this is useless.Even if you gather million people swearing Shaolin Vs Lama is best movie ever made it still does not change my opinion no way can make it into my indie top10.

And if I would have seen more independets I doubt it would be even in top20.

Like I think Harry Potters are useless trash for millions they are pure masterpieces. Can`t argue with that.

Yes I agree we all have opinions In my opinion it is still one of the best choreographed and action kung fu movies ever. I didn't say it was the best but It's in my top ten. To kill a master mind is the best ever period in my opinion. I have some of the best, hard to find and rarest kung fu movies ever made. I have been watching since 1972. I feel you though.

But i LOVE Prodigal Son! loved it! I also love Legend of Drunken Master, The Magnificent Butcher, Fearless (not an old classic), 36th chamber of Shaolin, and Martial Club.

This is a pretty cool site too. found it through www.kungfu-movie-madness.com I like the flkcinema.com forum too.

I'm learning a lot being new to kung fu movies and really enjoying them.

Hi everyone! This is my first post on the forum, and I'm glad to be here, let me tell ya!

There's been quite a few New Wave films listed in this thread; if we're keeping it to strictly pre-1985, then here's my list:

NON-SHAWS:

ODD COUPLE
KNOCKABOUT
MAGNIFICENT BUTCHER
THE VICTIM
THE PRODIGAL SON
THE IRON-FISTED MONK
WARRIORS TWO
DRUNKEN MASTER

SHAWS:
FIVE ELEMENT NINJAS (man, is this ever an amazing film!)
THE 36th CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN
DIRTY HO
CRIPPLED AVENGERS
INVINCIBLE SHAOLIN
FLAG OF IRON
THE SUPER INFRAMAN (hey, it's Kung-Fu enough to make my list!)

And can ya believe it, I haven't seen 8 DIAGRAM POLE FIGHTER yet...blasphemy, I know. Haven't seen lots of other Shaws either. But I'm trying to remedy that situation!

seriously, I agree with most of the all time greats listed here but not to include 36th Chamber of Shaolin is despicable!

Unless, somehow i missed it listed.

This was the first time we got a filmatic look behind Shaolin training doors! and Gordon Liu completely shaved his head! even though we are familiar with him that way, this was the first movie for a lead actor to do that. This is such a classic film that I include it in my top 10 kung movies of all time.

:nerd: also, i found this cool new kung fu fan site where if you are interested you can actually create your own web page on your favorite kung fu movie or kung fu legend. Check it out www.kungfu-movie-madness.com

it's still new and i feel like i'm the only visiting regularly, and would love to see more of you guys there!

thanks

I think you must have missed it, because I listed it in my post right above yours. :-)

It's also listed by at least seven other posters on this thread (I stopped counting after that). Excellent film.

My first post on this forum, i have been looking at it for a long time a decided to joint up, i think it is great!

I wont post the films that i have seen already posted, but two i would personally class as classic that i haven't seen on the list:

Boxer from Shantung
Opium and the Kung Fu Master

I would also put The Kung Fu Emperor as classic starring Tao-liang Tan aka flash legs, but i dont expect anyone to agree with me - it was one of the first kung fu flicks i ever watched and to this day i love it!

Hi all, my first proper post here goes:

There are so many greats but two names pop into my head whenever this question is raised....

The Prodigal Son
Dirty Ho

Da 8th Immortal
07-09-2010, 03:27 PM
I agree with many of the previous posts. That being said, to come up with a top 10 is damn near impossible.
I'm not gonna list flix that have already been listed. Also keep in mind i haven't gone through every single post because it was getting redundant.
So, i'll put my two cents in and say in no particular order...

(a) The Sixty Second Assassin aka Life On The Line aka Minute Fong
(b) Broken Oath Angela Mao, Sammo Hung, Lee Han Soi
om2rBX71gbY
(c) Mad Monkey Kung Fu
(d) Kung Fu of the Eight Drunkards (which I actually saw in the movies with my pops when i was kid)
56nB2CXy7rU
(e) Five Fingers of Death Lo Liegh
(f) One Arm Boxer Jimmy Wang Yu
(g) One Armed Swordsman David Chang
(h) The Descendant of Wing Chun
sufxQGiAMwY

I'm hesitant to put Snake in the Monkey's Shadow because, although it's a great movie it has some unnecessary clown shit in it. I don't like KF movies that has jokin and clowin around in them. That's why i can't stand Jackie Chan Since there's an exception to every rule he gets props for Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, Drunken Master and The Myth.

Back to Snake in The Monkey's Shadow....

It shows off many different styles. Opening scene is classic. When my boy (Yiu Lam) buzz cut up the tree with his hand trying to get at the Monkey style expert (Pomson Shi) was "classic". The movie highlights Snake, Monkey, Mantis, Tiger, Duck, Drunken Style, Eagle Claw and Immortal Style just to name a few. And my other homie (Hau Chiu Sing) that played The Drunken Master was superb. My dude was nonchalant about his beefs. Even in the face of certain death he was as cool as a breeze. When his students were fighting for their lives and they bust out the Immortal techniques was the ish. One dude called on the spirit of Wong Fei Hung and another bust out the Duck style. It was ill. I just didn't like the comedy they put in the flick cause it was stupid. Not funny. And anything with Wilson Tong in it is sheer madness. They don't call him the foot doctor for no reason (even tho he didn't bust out the feet skills in this one).

Duel of the Seven Tigers: this on the list because all the main characters are real martial artists. It shows in the beginning of the flick who they are, what their style is and what their accomplishments are (won tournaments, etc). Plus it has Wing Chun in it. Any movie that has Wing Chun in it is a must have.

Da 8th Immortal

I gotta add to my previous list of old skool classic top ten:

Duel of the Iron Fist Ti Lung David Chang

Two true hero's.
One with a grudge against the other, hell bent on revenge, there can only be one ending to a story like this for a dude like that.
And the other just doing the damn thang!

The following clip is subtitled a little different from my version. In my version David Chang is called, The Rover. And after that dude shouts, "I win!!!", Ti Lung doesn't skip a beat and says, "You Lose!!!!"
This joint is so hot that when I was a kid I use to walk around fake coughing all the time. HAHAHAHAHA

And there's nothing like a good old fashion knife fight old skool style. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Hey there, I'm new on the forum so I don't know if this is the proper place to post this (feel free to move the post, administrators), but I compiled a personal top 50 of my favourite classic (or semi-classic in some cases) Kung Fu-movies on ranker.com. Interesting to hear your thoughts about it :) I urge you all to make the same, would be fun to see how other die-hard martial arts fans rank these classics. Hope you like it! The list is preliminary, since I could easily have placed some movies in the wrong order or completely missed a few gems, so updates will be made.

Thanks a lot! :) And, yeah I agree, it's a very SB and GH-heavy list so far, but still, I honestly haven't seen that many movies apart from these that can compete with these studios' masterpieces. I've probably missed out on a lot of movies though, any suggestions as to what to watch to broaden the list a bit?

For me:

Heroes of the East ---- I first saw this at a drive-in as a teenager.

Drunken Master ----- this is Chan at his best

Close Encounters of a Spooky Kind ----- Sammo Hung and the supernatural

The Prodigal Son ------ favorite of Yuen Biao

The Buddhist Fist ----- the physicality in this movie blows my mind

Honorable Mention:
Secret Master ------ directed by Yuen Woo ping and starring Leung Kar Yan and Kurata. I've seen this mentioned on any page (unless I glommed over it). If you've never seen this, find it. I've never been able to find a DVD but I have it on VHS.

Reading through the pages of this thread, I saw raves for the movie "Legend of a Fighter". After my post, I went searching for it on the internet only to learn that it is the movie "Secret Master" which I listed as honorable mention.

Pretty self-explanatory. Shaw Brothers was obviously a dominant force of the 70s. And the films of Bruce Lee were also a force in their own. So besides those, what are some of your favorite, possibly must-see, classic martial arts films?

I'm not well informed when it comes to this stuff, so I'd like to experiment outside of SB for a bit and check out some other favorites, whether it be from Golden Harvest, Seasonal or wherever.

I'm sure Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master will be popular choices no doubt, but I'm curious to see what else is out there. I've also seen Warriors Two, which was alright but I didn't care for it as much as other people.

Can I recommend some of the WORST?

Invincible Super Chan
Chessboxing Matrix
Flash Future Kung-Fu
9 Demons
Spiritual Kung-Fu
The Lost Kung-Fu Secrets
Champ against Champ
Killer of Snake, Fox of Shaolin
Filthy Guy
Attack of the Joyful Goddess
Revenge of the Patriots

9 Demons? Ok it's not great but it has some amazing talent involved and the fights aren't all that bad (although the print of my DVD truly is). The dubbing is hilarious and the story is crazy enough to keep my interest at least.

I just saw some clips from The Lost Kung-Fu Secrets and I agree, that was embarrassing :D Slowest Kung Fu that I can remember..

The absolute worst movie I've seen is "Mantis under Falcon Claws". It had some favourable reviews on IMDB so I thought I'd give it a try but I literally feel sick when thinking about it, I'm not kidding.

OK, I have 219 Shaw films in my possession. I am also well versed in Jackie/Sammo/Yuen B/Bruce Lee/Jet Li/Jaa films.

My question is what am I missing in the way of old school flicks? What are some of the best that are not Shaw or Golden Harvest, etc?
Anything that is must see from other studios or independents?

I'd love to experience some new stuff!

Thanks in advance.

Without knowing what's in your collection, this is hard to answer. The original poster created a very nice list to get anyone going. If you go through this thread, you will get a good idea of what other titles to pick up. Many titles are repeated over and over again, so start out with a few of those.

-kung-fu brothers in the wild west
-return of shangai joe
-kid and the gunfighter
-the silent stranger
-red sun
-karate fist and beans

and probably 1 or 2 titles i forgot
