This was a recent poll as to who are the 10 nicest and 10 meanest Hollywood celebrities who either like giving their autograph or don't give a damn.

Nicest
1. Johnny Depp
New York autograph dealer Anthony Risi told Autograph the soft-spoken Depp "likes to talk to fans and get to know them while signing. He'll sign more than one item when he has time, too," he said.

2. Matt Damon
3. George Clooney
4. Jack Nicholson
5. Rosario Dawson
6. John Travolta
7. Katherine Heigl
8. Jay Leno
9. Dakota Fanning
10. Russell Crowe

Nastiest
1. Will Ferrell
Lon Strickler, 49, a Baltimore autograph collector: "Will Ferrell, I don't know what his problem is. He just tries to ignore people."

2. Tobey Maguire
3. Joaquin Phoenix
4. William Shatner
5. Renée Zellweger
6. John Malkovich
7. Julie Andrews
8. Bruce Willis
9. Teri Hatcher
10. Scarlett Johansson

Interesting. Never understood the purpose of an autograph - unless they're signing me a check, that is.
A photo op is always cool but an autograph...?

I can understand why celebs might be put off by signing in public. Everyone needs their space and people can't just bother them when they're dining or walking their kids, etc. There's a time and place for everything - including autographs.

Of course if my man Kirk (#4 on the nastiest list) snubbed me, I might have to make like Khan and bury his butt. :D

Most do but some do not. Some charge more than others, too. Conventions and what not. I can't imagine approaching a celebrity on the street though and asking for an autograph.

Conventions and what not.

Yeah, back in the late 90s I was at the Big Apple Comic Con in Manhattan. I had a really nice conversation with Sonny Shroyer (Enos of 'The Dukes of Hazzard'). About 10 minutes into it, I asked if we could do a photo and his manager/agent said it would be X dollars for a photo/autograph. I passed. I feel my 10 minute convo with him was worth much more than a lousy pic or signature. Anyway, I snagged this when he wasn't looking (though I wasn't in the shot) ...

One celebrity I would love to meet and ALMOST got to is William Smith. Probably most famous for fighting Eastwood at the end of ANY WHICH WAY YOU CAN (1980). He was also Conan's father in CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1982) and the Russian General in RED DAWN (1984) as well as the biker box office hit RUN, ANGEL, RUN (1969) among dozens of credits not to mention tv shows like GUNSMOKE, LAREDO, and PLANET OF THE APES.

Michael Beck from THE WARRIORS (1979) was a real nice guy as were the guys from TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 1 and 2 (1973;1986).:)

I'm shocked Russell Crowe is on the nice list. That poll listed him as the No. 1 nastiest not too long ago. He must be softening up lately.

Totally depends what the occasion is. I went to a Xena convention a couple of years ago to see Bruce Campbell and he signed for free and took pictures with everyone for free too. He stayed until everyone was taken care of, a class act guy.

A horror convention I went to, all the guests charged $20.00 for an autograph, but took pictures for free.

It all depends the situation and place. There are common sense rules about getting autographs. Most celebs don't mind as long as a fan is respectful and doesn't make a pest of himself.

Why get one? For fans its a memento to remember meeting someone from your favorite movie/song/sport/whatever. For me it's a sentimental thing. One of my favorite all time movies is the Evil Dead series. I have 4 out the 5 cast members autographs and a piece of the actual Necronomicon from E.D. 2. It was a thrill to meet and talk with some of the cast and to have a piece of movie history in my possession (no pun intended). All I can say is check in advance to make sure there are no charges.

I am in the majority that it sucks to pay to have a picture with someone, without fans already buying their mechandise they wouldn't have the status they have without us.

I think one thing is that celebs probably realize that some fans will try to sell their autographs to make a profit off of them even those that are personalized.

Without a doubt. People like that ruin it for true fans all around.

I don't mind though. A lot of these people are past their prime so to speak and aren't active in the film industry so this is just a means for them to make a little extra cash. I was at one convention one time and Erin Moran was there. I had brought my Italian DVD for GALAXY OF TERROR for he to sign. When I heard that she got hot tempered when fans were only asking her about this movie or to sign memorabilia related to said film, she then refused to sign or discuss the production or film related materials to GALAXY OF TERROR. She does blow up real good in the movie though! At least she wasn't molested by a giant maggot like Penthouse model Taffee O'Connell was!:D

I generally do not care for collecting signatures or photos of celebs because I don't consider any of them all that better than anyone else who works hard for living. But, I have gotten two sigs in my life. One was from Rosy Grier, the former LA Rams footballer and actor who starred in the wacky blaxploitation flick THE THING WITH TWO HEADS (1972). I met him at a radio station in Chicago years ago. He was extremely nice and gave me a good piece of advice to go with the sig. "Think before you act." I wondered how he could have known me so well. :)

The other sig was from RED DWARF star Danny John-Jules, better known as "Cat." On a whim I walked over to a PBS store signing on my lunch break and had him sign a mouse pad and pic. Yeah, I had to buy both but the money went to fund public television so I thought it was a worthwhile cause. He was a very pleasant guy too.

I have since lost the signatures. I'm with teako. The memory of speaking to an entertainer you admire beats any memorabilia.

But doing both is just as rewarding.

I touched Bob Geldof once. (No, not like that)

Please add Liza Minnelli, Dame Shirley Bassey and Vikki Carr to the "Nicest" list. Liza and the Dame were very nice to me in London. Dame Shirley followed up with a big colour photo sent to me. Vikki Carr sent a Christmas card one year as well as several autographed pics regularly.

Tom Cruise is supposed to be really cool when it comes to posing for pics and signing autographs. I remember reading about him recording voicemails for people on their phones too :)

I met the band Megadeth in 1997 and all four guys were really nice. They signed my brother's CD cover and a poster for me. I have the poster still framed up after 11 years. :))

Regardless what you think of him, when Tom Cruise got squirted with water in the face by that guy I have to say he handled with true class.
I've met a lot of musicians over the years, the guys from Pantera were complete pricks, and they were all about 5 foot 2, Amy Lee from Evenescence was very cool down to earth girl, got to meet and have drinks with her in the hotel then went out to a couple bars as my friend plays bass in a band called Cold and was on tour with her, the guys from Megadeath seemed a bit uptight to me, the guys in Slayer were cool as hell, Metallica when I got back stage were complete aholes.

I've heard Chevy Chase is a prick, I'm surprised he wasn't on the nasty list, I guess his time is up.
