Q on the Monkey King / Journey to the West

Earlier today, my brother and I were discussing the new Forbidden Kingdom film.
He mentioned that, back in the 70s, there was a mainland Chinese series of the Monkey King that was broadcast on PBS here in the US.

Does anybody have more information about this series? And if anybody actually has some of these episodes on disc?

I know that there was a Monkey King series called "Monkey" / "Monkey Magic" from the late 1979 - 80. It was the Japanese version of Journet To The West & was produced by Nippon Television. It was shot in Mainland China & Mangolia. It's dub in english & run on BBC not PBS. That series is available on DVD. Not sure about the PBS one.

Yeah that one I saw but that's not it - according to him.
He said it was in Mandarin and was an actual mainland production (he believes).
