Most of my collection is a mixture of both dubbed or fan subbed reencoded DVD's.

Since my interest in collecting has grown, so to has my desire for the source material. The only problem is I live in the states. I've heard that if I want original language DVD's (with English subs), I need to buy Region 3 DVD's.

I've found a great place to buy Region 3 from, but my only problem is a player to play them. I'm looking for both Region Free DVD players for my computer, and my living room, or alternately am curious to hear about hacks, as I was told that's how many people are playing region 3.

Any feedback would be cool.

There are a great number of DVD players that can play all regions / made region free & under $100:
Philips - popular & highly recommended for players under $100 as it can also plays DivX, mpeg, etc & can easily be made region free.
The philips 5982/37, 5990/37, DVP3040 are all good players.
Coby & Cyberhome- cheap & if you can find it.

Great info. That Philips 5982 looks "relevant to my interests", as I would like to play .avi, DivX, .mpg, etc.

Would I need to get a different T.V?

EDIT: I take that back about it mentioning it plays "avi" or mpg". Though A quick Google shows the Philips DVP642 is Region Free and plays avi, DivX, VCD, mpg, etc. That sounds up my alley, though the T.V dilemma I'm still confused about.

you dont need a new tv unless you have one thats from the 70s. If you got RCA's in the back, yer good jack

As oldeschool said you don't need a new tv - your old one will do just fine - if you have the necessary inputs. My SD TV which I have is dying (shutting off by itself) it is 7 years old & have 3 component & 2 S-Video inputs. The HDTV I have now have only 1 & 1 and I need something with more inputs & instead of buying another SDTV - I will just spend a little extra & buy a HD one.

The Philips DVP642 is a good player I used to own one - my niece has it now. Keep in mind that just about ALL the philips dvd players from the DVP3140 up are region free & plays Avi, DivX, Mpg, etc. The difference in them whould be what extra they offer such as USB connection, upconverting/HDMI connection etc,. I haven't seen the philips 642 in a store in a while as everyone was buying them when the price fell below $50 - I do see them online BUT some people are selling them for over a $100 & as much as $200, they try to justify the price by saying it is DivX certified - just about all Philips dvd players are DivX certified/plays DivX files.

Yeah I noticed the average price was 189.00, but in the article talking about it when it was released, the guy said Target was selling it for 60 bucks lol.

I'll try to look around for a cheaper one, I just need to make sure it plays .avi files, and can be hacked easily as you say.

$60 should be the selling price - that's what Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, etc was selling it for.

Read the specifications - it it says it plays DivX / DivX Certified - then it also play avi files.
Just about all the Philips dvd players are easily hacked - either by putting in a code or in the menu setup, but make sure it says Video disc playback system: PAL, NTSC

I have an all-region/code-free Toshiba SD 3990 that I bought for $130 cash at a Chinatown electronics store. It's a slim model and I connected it to my 13-inch TV/VCR combo in my bedroom. It plays EVERYTHING I've put in it, including PAL DVDs and CD-R's with video files from computer, stuff that doesn't play on my other code-free player. I want to get some more of these machines before they stop manufacturing them. (For all I know, maybe they already have.)

Yeah, DVD Hacks are even good for portable players. I had a Zenith that I unfortunately gave away which I hacked. Man, it played everything! Need to get me another one of those.
