Tomorrow I'm gonna purchase this
...
I've finally got most of my x-mas shopping done and the company who made this is offering it at a reduced price at 60.00 (normally it's around 80-90) with free shipping.
Good pick (especially because of Hugo) from a nice little DVD label.
Here's the link to that pick: http://flickeralley.com/fat_melies_01.html and further information for those interested.
We have republished George Melies: First Wizard of Cinema in a new, more economically-packaged edition and at a lower price point! Our new publication of the First Wizard of Cinema 5-Disc DVD set is being offered at a special sale price of $59.95. SHIPS TUESDAY, DECEMBER 20

Yeah, I bought it today and I haven't seen Hugo I might wait for a DVD release but this is a pretty good deal coming from them. All orders placed before December 20 will ship on that day with Priority mail shipping.

Hugo is a film that works well in the theater. Weird seeing Scorsese do a kids film, but it is done quite well. The movie is full of movie references -- especially silent movie ones :D. I need to eventually pick up that set. I've seen many of his shorts though
got this at Best Buy Saturday:

Yeah thanks as well from me, I just added it to my shopping list as well. Now only if I didn't have to buy presents for other people :). Amazon has it really cheap right now, though some of the reviews complain of the packaging.
I'm a Python fan as well (have the series and all the films).

I went and bought this today, I wanted it for a while.

Now let me tell you a little bit about the At Last The 1948 Show. It was executive produced by David Frost and starred Pythons John Cleese and Graham Chapman, also Marty Feldman and Tim Brooke Taylor. Tim and Terry Jones are interviewed for the bonus features.
It's 2 DVDs which some people think is a bit much because they say you could fit all of the material on just one. One of the highlights for me was the original 4 Yorkshiremen sketch which the Pythons did at their Hollywood Bowl show almost word for word like the original. There are five episodes over the two DVDs but really they are just a compilation of all the surviving footage of the show. The BBC apparently wiped most of the footage and John Cleese saved some while the Swedish I think saved a few other bits.
Quality is decent for the age of the film and time and fact that it's rare. A similar show came out around the same time which is also on 2 DVDs in the same setup from the same company called Do Not Adjust Your Set. That show has Pythons Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Terry Gilliam.
The packaging is simple and pretty basic but I have no quarrels with it. Overall it's a chance to see what helped inspire Monty Python and is recommended to anyone who wants to see some early Python style humor.

Think of it as the film that made Jackie mad at Jet Li and Wong Jing. Then Jet Li never worked with Wong again and apparently publicly apologized for taking the role. Jacky Cheung's character is a JC parody (with some other references thrown in there, but you will definitely see the JC similarities).

I sold my Rumble in the Bronx 2 Disc R2J just a few weeks ago (also Mr. Nice Guy and First Strike).
Dvd is half the price, plus I can back it up to my pc if I want to (I don't have a blu-ray drive).
I only own around 5 or 6 blu-rays, despite my username. I mainly just stick to dvds since my tv is only 720p. Also there aren't blu-ray equivalents of feature-packed dvds like HKL, etc.
Out of curiosity, why did you sell your 2-disc JC dvds? Are there better dvd versions available?

Out of curiosity, why did you sell your 2-disc JC dvds?
Because the films suck
I used to be a JC collector, but after Rob-B-Hood I thought no more this crap  And a few years later I realized that actually I should draw the line at mid-90's...
From Snake in the Eagle's Shadow to Drunken Master 2 Jackie kicks ass, after that, there's only a few films (including Gorgeous) that I feel the need to own.
Never got to the early ones, though. I'd be interested if solid mono-releases appeared.

RE: Citizen Kane, I picked up the Amazon exclusive and got Welles's The Magnificent Ambersons (so far only available on R1 through that deal) which is another excellent Welles film though, of course, it was taken from him and edited by others (including Robert Wise) like most of his films after Citizen Kane. Though if you are interested in Johnnie To, watch The Lady From Shanghai which was an influence on both To (you can easily see this in both Mad Detective and The Longest Nite) and John Woo.

Thanks for the info. I'm on a director-influenced-by-other-directors streak currently following films by Sergio Leone (To must be a proud fan who borrowed some scenes in For A Few Dollars More for Exiled) and going to follow that up with Akira Kurosawa films.

One of the fun things about studying cinema (well at least for me) is to see all the connections, the references, the homages (or sometimes the plain stealing of ideas), the accidental similarities all through it's history. Of course this is a neverending journey.
Kurosawa's influence is incredibly huge, especially on some Hong Kong directors like the ones I mentioned earlier. But he is such an incredible director that his films are ones that I will always appreciate. When you see his Sanshiro Sugata you can see an early archetype (one that originally came from literature/stage) of the master/student relationship so prevalent in MA films.
For fun compare the mirror (and maze) related scenes in The Lady from Shanghai, Enter the Dragon, The Longest Nite and Mad Detective.

BLACK DYNAMITE - Spoof of all those Blaxploitation movies, with Michael Jai White as the titular hero, imagine Jim Kelly crossed with fred Williamson with a dash of Jim Brown. Lots of big afro's, bigger collars, deliberate bad acting and you sort of get the gist.

Nice laserdiscs. I am trying to start collecting them but I gotta get a player first. I ran into a big disappointment when I visited a local antique shop recently. I saw a big box full of all the covers but then looking inside I realized that that's all they were, just the covers.

SHOGUN'S SHADOW is one of my favorite Chiba-san chanbara films. It kicks ass from the first few minutes on. Would you care for an arrow? Anyone? :xd:
THE EXECUTIONER is about a group of bad asses hired to right a wrong, and Chiba-san plays the ninja of the group. There's some cool flashback footage of him training as a kid (he's played by a very young Hiroyuki Sanada), and he has some good karate action in it. Yasuaki Kurata even shows up at the end to join a big fight. Good stuff!

It worried me at first that I didn't know the company who put these out although I don't many dvd companies that put out asian films but the dvds themselves with the cases and all looked profressional compared to what a bootleg or cheap dvd would. Thanks for the info and I'm going to watch them later this evening.
This company didn't last nearly as long as I would have liked. But they put out really sweet releases of a bunch of Chiba-san stuff, including a lot that had never had any sort of home video release. They were all uncut, original language, anamorphic widescreen versions too. Plus, nice packaging/photos.
Off the top of my head, they put out:
EXECUTIONER, THE (1974, aka. Direct Hit! Hellfist; Hell Fist)
EXECUTIONER II: KARATE INFERNO, THE (1974, aka. The Karate Inferno)
G.I. SAMURAI (1979, aka. Time Slip)
The Mas Oyama Trilogy:KARATE BULL FIGHTER (1975, aka. Champion of Death)
KARATE BEAR FIGHTER (1977)
KARATE FOR LIFE (1977)
KILLING MACHINE (1975, aka. Shaolin Martial Arts)
LEGEND OF THE EIGHT SAMURAI (1984, aka. Legend of 8 Samurai; Satomi Hakken Den)
NINJA WARS (1982, aka. Ninja War; Iga Magic Story; Black Magic Wars; Death of a Ninja; Iga Ninpoucho)
RESURRECTION OF GOLDEN WOLF (1979)
SHOGUN’S NINJA (1981, aka. Ninja Secret Scroll; Ninja Bugeicho Momochi Sandayu)SHOGUN’S SAMURAI (1978, aka. Shogun Samurai; The Yagyu Clan Conspiracy; The Yagyu Conspiracy; Conspiracy of Yagyu Family)
SHOGUN’S SHADOW (1989, aka. Geki Totsu: The Insanity of Emperor Iemitsu; Attack! Shogun Iemitsu is Crazy)
SWORDS OF VENGEANCE (1978, aka. The Fall of Ako Castle; Last of the Aoko Clan)
The Sister Streetfighter Collection:SISTER STREETFIGHTER (1974, aka. Female Fighting Fist in Danger; Woman Certain Kill Fist; Lethal Fist Woman)
SISTER STREETFIGHTER 2 (aka.Hanging By A Thread)
SISTER STREETFIGHTER 3 (aka. Return Of Sister Streetfighter)
SISTER STREETFIGHTER 4 (aka. Sister Streetfighter: Fifth Level Fist)
And I think the same guy that was responsible- Cliff MacMillan- also put out, through a different company:
SHADOW WARRIORS I (1980, aka. Kage No Gundan I; Hattori Hanzo- Kage No Gundan I) TV Series, Season 1, episodes 1-27

I have the Karate movies of this set and they are great.
I am a fan of Chiba's Karate based films, not so much his action fare, although they're all entertaining. Sue Shiomi's films are great also.
I also have that Swords of Vengeance. Great film!

Well, haven't got them yet but I'm saving up to buy Alexander Fu Sheng's "Friends" and "Detective Dee and Phantom Flame." Still haven't decided yet whether to get Peter Chan's "The Warlords"( I absolutely loved it) and "Wu Xia" which I haven't seen. I usually don't like buying something I haven't watched especially given the cost. However, Chan is becoming a favorite director of mine since 2005's "Perhaps Love." I may also get "Let's the Bullets Fly" if I can ever view that on Netflix at some point....which I seriously doubt.....not sure what to make of it but I'm a huge fan of Carina Lau.

CatNap, you should grab those right away. Being a fan of Peter Chan should all the more be a reason. The Warlords is a showcase for Jet Li's improved acting. I was quite impressed with how he handled his character. The fighting is toned back however, it's a nice little War tale. Wu Xia, for Jimmy Wang Yu's performance, is hands down one of the best recent screen villains. He was scary!
Take the chance with these two, I assure you, you'll be glad you did.

The US region 1 BATTLE ROYALE complete collector's set.
I watched the Theatrical Cut of BR and BRII so far. The picture quality is beautiful!
I think BR is brilliant, and BRII doesn't come near it in terms of depth. But it's still a cool film that usually gets nothing but hate. Sure, it's not a follow-up that will join THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK or THE ROAD WARRIOR in the hallowed halls of golden sequels. But as an action film it's not bad at all.

Yeah, KFB, Battle Royale I is a classic. I had the pleasure of seeing for the 1st time on a subbed Japanese release months after it opened in Japan. Was completely floored with the concept, and became more interested in Beat Takashi ever since. Al I can say is wow, and WOW.

Same here man. I snatched this up from HKFLIX the second it was available. (BTW- for fans of that site, I heard from Mhatt recently. He's doing great! It was cool to catch up with him and say "thanks" for all the flicks I got from them.). I too was on the floor bro. What a film! There's a quote from Tarantino on a sticker on the BD that says "I wish I had made this film."
Are you going to grab the BD?

Picked this up today at work. It releases on May 1st. I work in a video rental store, so I get things early :O lol Hopefully it's decent. I haven't been a huge fan of many Ric Meyers commentaries on movies, so we'll see.
