Yes it is. Chiba plays one of Yakuza bosses' son - thou he wasn't in all the films.

Just what you said, I wanted to like the film but ended up feeling let down, and the 'twist' ending was so obvious less than half way through.

Oh okay. The ones I have are Fortune Star but distro from Deltamac save for the first one. It comes housed in a slipcase from Fortune Star with distro by IVL.
QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC (1979) is finally out in a gorgeous quality dvd from Mondo Macabro. This was released in some markets as BLACK MAGIC 3 and was also known as BLACK MAGIC TERROR. The bootleg I have is decent quality but the new MM dvd is stunning. Some great gore here including a guy who rips off his own head which then proceeds to fly around biting chunks out of people!

Circuit City has a sale of movies for 3.99 so I loaded up on these:
Caddyshack (absolute classic comedy)
Austin Powers - Int'l Man of Mystery (another classic)
Money Talks (when Chris Tucker was really funny...)
Reservoir Dogs - Special Ed. (the one QT film I haven't seen)
Elektra (good film, bought this mainly for the wife)
Also grabbed King of Queens, Seasons 4-8 (also on sale) :D

Is that the Fukasaku crime set? If so, I had this in my hands some time ago. Chiba is a villain in some of these, right?
Chiba is in the Second movie and has one of the craziest parts in the whole series as he decides to get what he wants in whatever violent manner he has to(plus he loves to scratch his balls a lot:p), they bring back his character in the last one but unfortently it's played by someone else.
Elektra (good film, bought this mainly for the wife)
Yeah, not that you don't enjoy seeing Jennifer's fabulous backend in those tight pants the whole movie:D
I've only picked up
Heroes Two
Intimate confessions of a Chinese Courtesan(yet to watch)
Picked up Godzilla vs King Kong on vhs.

Just picked up DVD 9 of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 collection. I have the entire series in digital files (250 Gigz at 700 mb per movie lol), but wanted the original DVD's. I would have bought DVD 10 as well, but Twilight Zone The Complete Definitive Collection just broke my bank last time out eshopping, so I'm saving pennies.

Echh. An unfortunate experiment in American television (to me at least). I realize it's a subjective / eye of the beholder argument, but that show was worse than Mama's Family to me. And that's pretty bad. I think I must owe this in part to being both gen-x, and male. Characteristics not typically linked to having an affinity for elderly women, and sitcoms written around them. Maybe I never gave the writing a chance, that I blame on being a kid, and then a teenager as the show aired.
On a side note: We're in unfaltering agreement over Cheers. Cheers was simply awesome. I'd happily revisit each episode as would friends. If for nothing else, to hear Cliff Clavin elaborately describe in detail a totally useless fact. The writing to the rapport and chemistry among the entire cast was really one of a kind.

I'm 25 and male, I think the show is quite funny-- Dorothy and Sofia especially. It's one of the few shows my girl likes that I actually like, even though I didn't think I would.

It's probably not a fair assessment, as everything I'm basing that opinion on is coming from the perspective of a 13 year old kid. Not exactly an NPOV lol. My friends would have lynched me for stopping on Golden Girls watching T.V back then.

Where did you get your TZ complete collection? I bought mine from deepdiscount for only $136.00 which was the price for just one of those seasons by themselves. MST3K is good...sometimes. I wish they'd put TEENAGE STRANGLER on dvd already. That one was classic!
"Jimmy didn't do it! And he didn't steal no bike, neither!" That kid with the glasses was an absolute riot. And there rip on ATOR, THE BLADE MASTER was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Strangely, they showed this with different opening and ending credits under the title CAVE DWELLERS(??)

Yeah as much as I love those guys (many episodes are hilarious *both the Movie (This Island Earth), Manos the Hands of Fate, and (lol) Samson vs. the Vampire Woman come to mind) I'd probably rather have the entire MST3K collection with no commentary or silhouettes each on a separate DVD. That's basically 175 (really bad) movies not including shorts, specials, the movie, or now infamous season O (KTMA TV).
You got a steal. I paid about $190.00 for my Twilight Zone collection, but I'm such a die-hard Serling loyalist, and long time TZ fan, that it was a really easy decision (I was sort of waiting for the entire collection to be packaged together for a few years).
In another thread I asked If you could only keep 3 from your Kung Fu collection, well if I could only keep 1 series, set or specific genre of my DVD's, it would be (without hesitation) my Twilight Zone collection. Though right now I have this insatiable appetite for 60's era Asian cinema (love the film stock in those days), so the few I have of those would probably need to come too lol.

I didn't know they released SAMSON VS THE VAMPIRE WOMEN! I love that movie! There was a DVD from Something Weird I think it was but it got pulled rather quickly because of problems with K. Gordon Murray. I was in hopes CasaNegra Entertainment would release it as they had done some stunning jobs releasing classic Mexi-horror but sales caused them to go out of business apparently.
Anyway, I caught SAMSON VS THE VAMPIRE WOMEN on the great 80s show, COMMANDER USA & HIS GROOVY MOVIES. He used to show lots of Mexi-horror and 70s Hammer movies double features. He would often show some serials as well. Do you have the MST3K book? I have one but don't remember seeing this film in there. I've look through it again.

THE JEFFERSONS are great! I only got seasons 1-3. Got CHEERS seasons 2,3,5-7 yesterday. Working on an intermittent marathon right now. A shame season nine isn't the "complete season 9" as some music has been replaced on a couple of episodes. I hate that. Guess the studio didn't want to spring for the extra cash to use the original song (in this case 'I Fought the Law, and the Law Won') that played during the shows original airdate.

With Quantum Leap I think it was just the first 3 seasons, but only on starting with season 3 did they put something on the box to say the original music soundtrack is missing. They have to know it is not gonna please fans, a lot of times the music is just as big a part of these shows as is the writing.

Yeah, the GOMER PYLE sets and now the CHEERS season nine only say "the second, third, fourth season"(PYLE) or "the ninth season" (CHEERS) minus the word "complete". On the back there's a box that states some of the episodes are musically edited.
And as you say, it doesn't please fans. It irks me because it destroys the funniness of the scene especially if you remember a certain tune was playing that made the joke even more hilarious.

The Dream Team-- Michael Keaton always plays crazy a little too well.
Invisible Target-- sold my HK version and put the 15$ towards DD-- mainly wanted the special features.
The Princess Bride-- waste of money though because the edition that I already had isn't too different from the one I purchased. But I got a really neat t-shirt.
John Carpenters Prince of Darkness-- was surprised to see this one on the shelves, hadn't seen this one since the early 90's.

Just got the 2 disc SE of Creepshow.
Fantastic disc, remastered film and disc 2 is full of great stuff like audio commentary, outtakes and a 90 minute making of documentary.
Apparently this is currently only available in the UK , Region 2 PAL so we in the UK get a superior version for a change!
Anyone with multi region players i would say get it now if you like the film.

I have been trying to collect all his movies along with the ones by Bud Spencer.

Yes, Terence Hill. I already have the UK dvd under the title SUPER SNOOPER and it has added and extended scenes and different music in some places. CRIME BUSTERS is both Hill and Spencer together. I have a number of their films as well. There's a swedish box set that contains just about everything they ever did for pretty cheap only to import that one is expensive. I think it's well over 10 discs.

I have the original Indy set as well, and I thought about getting the newer set, but from what i've seen of the new set the special features wouldn't justify the 'upgrade'. Also, the originals have the 2 hour making of special feature that the newer sets do not have.

Just received "Red Shield" and "No Compromise" (Danny Lee Sau Yin). Really enjoyed them. For someone who has so many cop roles, he really knows how to make each of his characters and films special for their own reason, even if the plots are similar.
Next I've ordered:
-Undeclared War (Danny Lee Sau Yin's one and only international film. His English isn't bad at all)
And am looking to order some others, mainly more Danny Lee films and round up some more Yuen Biao.

I haven't seen that one, but now I want to. Pride is just amazing. It may not have as many entertaining fights as UFC because there's more grappling in Pride and no cage, but you can see that Pride easily had the better fighters. Would you mind telling me how these look? I'm interested in them all but I hate getting boots because they usually are horrible and the $$ isn't going to anyone who worked on the show. (Many of whom haven't made much since the 70's.)
I recently picked up Hana Yori Mo Nao, Love And Honor, Three Outlaw Samurai (the HK disc has mediocre video but the film is still great), Samurai Wolf I & II, Zatoichi's Pilgrimage (yes...the REAL one. Great DVD from Merlin), Tenchu!, and the Mikogami Trilogy. I cannot get enough of the period samurai films.
I wish I could afford decent quality DVDs of some of the TV series, I haven't found any that aren't 2 episodes per disc at around $15-20 a disc. (even considering these are DVD-R) With the large # of episodes these shows have it can be pretty expensive.

I was going to get those but BB was sold out of most everything Shaw save for BAT WITHOUT WINGS and SHAOLIN INTRUDERS but I already have those. I had THE MASTER in my hands but put it back.
How are the interviews with CKT on this one? I was very disappointed with the HEROES TWO dvd as he wasn't given the opportunity to really open up about the films production and didn't really tell anything that wasn't already known. CKT seemed so ecstatic to talk about his experiences I'm a bit shocked he didn't do a (subbed) commentary track which would have been incredible to hear his stories seeing how he was in the film. MB has done subbed commentary tracks in the past so this was a terribly missed opportunity here.
The Dragon
08-06-2008, 04:55 AM
Well it's pretty much the same old story, another missed opportunity. The interview with him is the same one from Heroes Two.?! I agree he seemed prepared to really "open up" about his experiences, however, maybe the party conducting the interview saw it as a laborious task, and didn't seek to seize an opportunity most fans would die for.
venoms5
08-06-2008, 04:58 AM
Maybe his interviews on the CHALLENGE OF THE MASTERS disc will provide some interesting info on working for Shaw's or the industry in general.

Heroes Two and The MAster have 2 different interviews. I thought they were good. I think I'm really easy to please when it comes to these interviews. Out of all the Dragon Dynasty and other interviews I've heard in the past couple years I've enjoyed them all.
venoms5
08-06-2008, 05:04 AM
The interview was fine but nothing overly revealing. The main reason to watch it for me was just to see CKT today and he did seem rather pleased to be getting some attention from fans. Still, a commentary track from the man would have been an extremely welcome addition to that, or any of these discs with movies he appears in. He obviously remembers them quite well and appears jovial to discuss his time working with Cheh and the other actors but for whatever reason, MB decided against doing this, or just didn't think about it at all.

That is a very goo idea to have him do a subbed commentary, but I don't think it's possible. I could be way off on this, but Chen kuan Tai isn't doing these interviews individually. MIke Leeder did this interview awhile ago, so it looks like MB is showing different portions of it on each DVD release (BTW is every MB Shaw release going to star Chen Kuan Tai? lol :p).

I have the IVL dvd for THE MASTER. I can get this edition any time although I've almost picked it up several times now, I don't think it's going OOP anytime soon especially considering MB has started doubling these releases up now which leads me to believe that these are not selling all that well or possibly they're trying to attract the casual fan into taking a chance and purchasing two for one.

Sure it's possible. They only need to sit the man down and give him a head set and he watches the film and records his comments about his time on the set. I would assume they didn't want to pay expense of doing this and opted instead to give us a 7 minute interview that doesn't delve into what went into the making of HEROES TWO or any of the other films with CKT for that matter. I can't speak for those as I only bought the H2 disc from MB so far but IMO, they missed the boat on this one. A nice package but could have been so much better. This was like eating an orderve instead of a main course. It's still good, but leaves you wanting more.
venoms5
08-06-2008, 05:16 AM
Ok, that explains it. I didn't see all of the interview, thinking it was the same information repeated ala some IVL's.
Yes, but the interview doesn't go into details about the film on the disc. I'm watching an interview right now with Sonny Chiba about making TIME SLIP and he goes into great detail about working on the film.
I've seen HEROES TWO half a dozen times and if CKT is on board for extras, I was really excited to hear some stories about making the movie (preferably a commentary) but nothing. Subbed commentaries were provided on some of MB's Italian horror dvds so why not these?
Morgoth Bauglir
08-06-2008, 05:26 AM
MAybe it has something to do with money. It is surely a whole lot cheaper to use this interview then bring CKT in for a commentary or get new interviews in a studio like what Dragon Dynasty does. And I remember Linn saying (in a letter Teako posted I think) that he had to like record his commentary using a special program and then email it to MB (something like that I think). So maybe they don't have a place to do a commentary? I don't really know how this stuff works.

08-06-2008, 05:33 AM
I'm only speaking for myself and what I would like to have seen on these as I am, at present, more intrigued by the behind the scenes of what went into making these films what they are and by knowing that, would enable an even better appreciation for these works.
Speaking of TIME SLIP, I can't believe there is relatively little talked about in regards this brilliant and wholly unappreciated film. This new 2 disc edition seems to have "slipped" under the radar so to speak. The interviews ported over from the '05 Japanese dvd are excellent and very informative. Also, the stereo track has been used here which was left off the previous releases. A review of this one is in order.:D

This new 2 disc set is astounding. It looks and sounds better than ever. I love the character switch towards the end between Iba and Kagetora. A fascinating film nonetheless but I can see why some would think it boring. the final 30 minute battle sequence is worth the dvd alone, IMO.

I would love to be able to go to a local mom and pop shop, but here in little old Seaford, Delaware, we don't have those things here. We only have regular national chains here, it is a shame. There are some in Wilmington, but they're about a two hours away. But, I am going to look for that documentary.

Cool, it was a well done documentary. The most un-nerving part of the documentary was when they snuck a camera into China. They did an interview with a cute girl who worked in one of the Wal-mart factories. They're forced to live in squalor, work 18 hours/day every day for almost nothing.
Anyways, i miss the neat little shops, too bad you usually have to go to the big cities to enjoy them. Another alternative is the internet, my favorite is yesasia.com

All three are very good films. "Public Enemy" probably being my favorite of the three. Then "No Blood, No Tears", and "Gun's And Talks". I'd say thats a hell of a deal you got. I purchased all 3 of those seperately for @ $15 each a few years back. Just wish ADV went a little more out on their releases. All of em are pretty much bare bones (no extras). Only DD2.0 on original language tracks, but DD5.1 on the english dubs. If you like "Public Enemy" check out the sequel "Another Public Enemy". Just about as good and the R1 release was done by Tartan. Much better disc with some nice features (can be had for cheap too).

Just got:
Dark City dir. cut: Awesome flick, though I wonder if the "director's cut" treatment was necessary here...:o
Flash Point: Average flick, but the final fight is so great.:D Donnie is definately one of the most creative ma choreographer working right now. And Wilson Yip sure knows how to shoot an action scene.
The Machinist: "If you were any tiner you would disapear." God Christian Bale lost weight for this little underapriciated gem. If you haven't scene this I strongly suggest it.
The Fountain: I would sure have loved to see Darren Arronofsky's original vision put to screen, but hey, what we are left with is pretty damn good! "Death is the road to awe..."

The Forbidden Kingdom (2-Disc Special Edition)
http://dv1.us/p1/490/108490-d1.jpg
And I think I got Ripped off on The fist of legend Dragon Dynasty release.I was supposed to get a 2 disc Ultimate edition, but all i got was a friggin 1 disc special edition.
Did anyone else have this problem?

Just bought the remastered Dragon Jester DVD of High Voltage, the 1994 Donnie Yen actioner.
Also picked up Dragon Jester's News Attack starring Andy Lau, Wilson Lam and Miu Kiu-wai.
Dragon Jester has just released a handful of rare titles and I have learnt that if you don't grab them while you can while they are still in the shops, it is difficult to get a copy later as my copy of Skin Striperess is still on backorder.

Here's an amendment. Despite what the cover says, High Voltage is not remastered. It is a VCD print. News Attack is however a DVD print. These Dragon Jester titles are inconsistent in quality. You won't know what you are getting until you pop the disc into your player.
Gonna get Forbidden Kingdom next chance I get. And hopefully the new Fist of Legend DVD too.
