I've been listening to Japanese pop and rock, also known as J-Pop and J-Rock since I was 13. Two of my best friends back home in New York are Japanese so they got me hooked on it.

My favorite J-Pop/J-Rock artists are:
X-Japan
Gackt
Loudness
Malice Mizer
L'Arc-en-Ciel
Chage and Aska
B'z
Hironobu Kageyama (he performed the original theme songs for the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z cartoons)
Megumi Hayashibara (she is the most famous anime voice actress in Japan)

When I went to college, I started listening to Chinese and Korean music. Of course with Chinese artists, you've seen most of them on screens, but they can do some pretty good music too.

Chinese artists I like:
Nicholas Tse
Andy Lau
Anita Mui
Leslie Cheung
Sam Hui
Ekin Cheng
Jacky Cheung
Leon Lai
Aaron Kwok
Eason Chan

Korean artists I like:
Park Ji-Yoon
Kim Hyeong
Baek Ji-Young
S.E.S.
Seo Taiji and Boys
Yoo Seung-Jun

So if you like Asian music, who do you like???:)

I'm a huge fan of Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung. Jacky Cheung is another favorite and I enjoy some of Jay Chou. Although I don't have any of her CDs yet, Tsai Chin has a wonderful voice and I might pick up some of her music at some point.

Jackie Chan!

Seriously though, one of my favorite bands is japanese, called "toe". Pretty much pure instrumental alternative rock. I heard someone refer to it as "mint rock", but I don't know what that is so I just call it alternative. Also have a lot on my playlist from another japanese rock band called The Pillows, and some japanese rap, like Lamp Eye.

I don't like much contemoporary music, but Halcali's album 'Bacon' is a peach. Here's the sukeban-influenced video for 'Giri Giri Surf Rider'.

I like traditional Asian music, especially Kabuki, what got me into this was a scene from Kagemusha . When I was in China I wanted to pick up an Ur Hu as you can get a nice one for 50 bucks, unfortantly I bought to much stuff and couldn't fit anything else, regret that now as I haven't had a chance to get back.
I'm pretty open to different music so I need to check some of this stuff out, I play a double bass and recently joined a rockabilly band, Psycobilly is huge in Japan right now, two badass Japanese bands for this is "Robin" and Battle of Ninjamanz.

I like mongolian and tuvan music (Yat-Kha and Sainkho in particular) if that counts.
I love to listen to Cantonese opera...
And I tend to like traditional Asian music (I know it sounds vague - but my knowledge in that area *is* still pretty vague...;-)).

I have a Yat-Kha album, but I have never listened to it, and I have no idea where I got it from.

Which one?
In any case - if you like throat singing and folk music mixed with rock, go for it.

Anita Mui
Leslie Cheung
Jacky Cheung

Korean
Wonder Girls - because they so cute.
Jang Hyuk - love his videos especially the ones with Jeon Ji Hyun.
I enjoyed the music from "I hate you but it's fine/Likable or Not" & "Seven Princesses".

Though its mixed, I would also throw in Buddha Bar - I have 9 of the releases.

Tuva Rock.
Come to think of it, I recently heard some girl on the radio talk about her masters assignment on mongolian music (Yes, really), and she mentioned some band that combined folk music with rock. Maybe she was talking about Yat-Kha.

The Pillows are awesome. My favorite song from them is "Ride on Shooting Star" from the FLCL anime series...the music video is so great to enjoy!

Tuva Rock.

Tuva Rock is great. I slightly prefer albums like Dalai Beldiri or Aldyn Dashka, but Tuva Rock rocks, too...:-)

Could be. Or maybe (if it really was mongolian and not tuvan) Altan Urag or some such band. I don't know much about the music of the region - it's still all quite new and fresh for me... But mongolian and siberian music is absolutely fascinating - definitely worth exploring.

1. Ivy Ling Po - but of course!
2. Tsin Ting who sang for all the Shaw actresses in the films
3. Frances Yip who continues to mesmerise me with her dynamic showmanship and mastery on stage.

I like a lot of pop and rock from all over Asia, mostly pre-1980's stuff. However I am particularly fond of the lo-fi stuff, and Japanese girl groups and intrumentals from the mid 60's to the mid 70's.

Cantonese/Beijing opera, Chinese and Japanese folk stuff. Central Asian music that has quite a few different influences. I am kind of over the Tuvan and Mongolian stuff tho - being a field ethnommusiccologist has it's disadvantages.

As mentioned, a lot of OST from HK and Japanese films.

I have an active dislike of most Asian pop music that apes Western pop music... All things being equal I dislike the Western version more. :D

Oh, and I think Charlene Choi from the Twins should me my wife.

Aside of music from films, I haven't heard alot of Asian music. I've got one of Jackie Chan's CDs and Ricky Hui Greatest Hits, and in J-ROCK I liked X-JAPAN and also their guitarist PATA's side project called Ra:IN.

Actually I tracked down one of YUEN BIAO's albums from the '80s, and I've got another one on the way. I haven't got a turntable at home but I listened to it at a friend's house once and it wasn't bad, it's '80s pop I guess with synths etc.

Anyway I'll be interested going through this thread and listening to some of the artists mentioned here.

Agreed. She just had a concert with Elisa Chan in my area on Sunday.

Currently I'm listening to Jason Chan's latest album.

J-Pop! I'm really not into the bands that most Americans are into from these genres.

J-POP

sacra - not too hard, but not a soft rock band. Uses some retro elements to combine Rock and Pop. (http://www.barks.jp/watch/?id=1000017058&b=1m&pl=wm)

http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/682/sacraiu4.jpg

Group Tamashii - totally over-the-top hard rock band with ridiculous costumes, along with energetic live and album performances. (http://www.barks.jp/watch/?id=1000010711&b=1m&pl=wm)

I listen to Japanese composers who work in film and anime, e.g. Kenji Kawai (Ghost in the Shell), Taro Iwashiro (Rurouni Kenshin) and Jo Hisaishi, who composes for both Hayao Miyazaki and Takeshi Kitano. I like a lot of singers who sing anime theme songs and do voices for anime, e.g. Megumi Hayashibara and Junko Iwao. I also like a lot of J-pop singers (Aya Matsuura, Maki Goto, Ayumi Hamasaki, Namie Amuro, etc.) and groups (Max, Speed, etc.).

I really *do like* what happens to this R'n'B thing (which I'm not the greatest fan of) when it crosses over to Kazakhstan...
Yerbolat - Мен Казахпын (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zIphGgwgZY)

And now for something maybe not completely, but quite different.
Kazakhs still, though:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53_FsGxvkSo
I'm not likely to get tired of listeining to throat singers any time soon...

And I've been listening to Chinese military and nationalistic songs these past few weeks.
I must decontextualize, of course (a lot)... But some of those PLA songs are really, really cool.

Sigh's Hangman's Hymn is a fantastic album. The poppiest stuff I listen to is Nanase Aikwawa, and even she is pretty Metal for a popstar. Mainly I like the Visual Kei movment from Japan, such as X-Japan and hide's solo stuff, D'espairsRay, pre-US releases Dir En Grey and Onymuza. I am always willing to hear about any Asian Metal bands.

Alan Tam is great, and I listen to little bit of Jackie Chan music also. I haven't investigated the canto-pop scene yet :) Teresa Teng is pretty good also, mando-pop if you can call it that heh.

I've got a number of Pillows discs, both FLCL soundtracks and regular ones. I also have a few anime series soundtracks that get listened to with some frequency. Most of the J-pop idol stuff doesn't enthuse me, though.

Another Sigh fan! Awesome!

With DragonSword, that makes at least 3 on this board.

I also listen to stuff like Boris, KK Null, Abigail, Boredoms, Electric Eel Shock, Keiji Haino. I could really go on, but I guess I'm just inclined to unorthodox methods of creating music.

I am a huge fan of Keiko Matsui (contemporary jazz/new age). And, I am just catching onto Rain. But that's as far as my knowledge of popular Asian music extends. I often listen to Korean and Cantonese fare on internet radio. However, the song titles and artists' names aren't always given. I speak no Asian language, so acquiring this information has been difficult. Thanks to this thread, I now have a list of artists to research. 'Much appreciation!
