The sound effects for fight scenes differ from one movie to the next and from one era from the next. For me, good sound effects can actually seem to make a fight better. The sound effects from 'Shaolin vs. Lama' are awesome, imo. Anyone have any favorites?

The Godfrey Ho movies are the best. You can't top those beeping sounds.

Same thing with Isaac Florentine's Special Forces. It did get pretty annoying.

For some reason I don't pay much attention to sounds, they all blend together. But there's a few I can think of off the top of my head. I remember there's a fight between Donnie Yen and John Salvitti in Crystal Hunt, and they use these really dinky sounds that almost ruins a great fight scene. One of my favorites is Flash Point. Very cool sounds. But mainly I'm a fan of the over the top stuff. I love the opening of Master of the Flying Guillotine where Kam Kong's hand movements are really really loud.

Florentine's "whooshes" were a remnant from his POWER RANGER days. That was my main gripe about his early martial arts films. He has since moved away from using that sound effect.

This is taking the subject out of the realm of martial arts movies but I noticed the punches in the new INDIANA JONES flick matched the distinctive meat-slapping effect of the previous films. I recently watched all of the films and also noticed that the sound is the same in each movie and doesn't quite sound like any other punching effect.

Foley effects on old school movies have always been exaggerated. It's interesting to hear how newer kung fu movies have shifted to softer, more realistic striking sounds.

Regardless, sound is critical to enhancing a good fight sequence. Try watching raw film footage without the post production work. It's like night and day.

My personal preference lies within oldschool shapes movies. Never liked the sfx style often used in bashers and same goes with most new wave movies. Also i'm allergic to remixed sfx so often on fortune star, hkl, early ivl shaw etc. releases.

Also gotta agree with Morgoth on this one. The sfx in Asso Asia/IFD etc. releases are awesome.

One that comes to mind is the Casanova Wong flick Magificent Wondermen where there monks' wooden poles emmit a clearly metallic sound - even when they hit the grass :D .. Classic
