2.35 (4:3), German, English and Mandarin Audio. uncut Version, cobbled together from a German Digi-Beta from the 80s (Letterboxed, cut) with a French uncut Source (in 2.35).

Extras:
Two German Trailers, one for the banned Version, one for the re-issue (censored Version of the Movie)
Credit Sequence (2.35, with French Credits, but a bit longer)
the Scene without Credits, Fullscreen.
Original HK Credits Sequence, Fullscreen.

Two Cover Designs. no English subs thanks to BOOTLEGGERS. the previous DVD Release was the last of ours to feature English Subtitles. too bad, eh?

No offence, but I wouldn't touch the German release, I'll wait until someone adds English subtitles to the Mandarin track, and get a DVD-R. It sucks that the Germans are being ripped off by bootleggers, but I don't see why I should pay for it.

Bootleggers have too much sway over the market as it is and a German distributor bowing to this pressure really doesn't help. It's not like it's gonna stop them booting the discs for the English dub. Only the real (non-German) fans get punished.

Because the pervasiveness of bootleggars stealing makes it less likely legit DVD makers will work on English friendly options when their work is simply going to be bootlegged. It costs money to get legit dvds together, and then English options is just an extra cost they don't have to make. Hell, I'm supprised they have ANY English content, as most don't.

I don't see what the problem is. Why would a company outside the west spend the extra money on creating a sub track, when it's clear that bootleggars will simply copy it and sell their work for a lower cost? The sales would be slight to English speakers anyway when talking of a German title, as many cannot be sold outside of Germany. In all honesty, if they wanted to truly make their DVDs "bootleg-proof," just offer the English subtitles. It's FAR less likely they will be booted and more likely fans will buy it. Adding the English dub track nearly makes it a certainty. Hell, most fans want the dub track anyway. ;)

The Chinese credits may actually be 2:35:1 squished into 4:3 (lots of movies tend to do that for the credits). If that is the case, it'll be possible to reinstate them back into the film or something. Will give you to opportunity to present them in the correct ratio; making use of the anamorphic.

The logic at work here seems spurious. As far as I can make out, the assertion is that making an English-friendly edition of the DVD makes bootleggers want to copy it, so in order to protect themselves financially they're releasing a DVD that virtually nobody in the English-speaking world actually wants. So in protecting themselves from 'bootleggers', they're also 'protecting' themselves from the lucrative English-speaking market.

It's a shame to see releases get altered or cancelled because of bootlegs. I'm just wondering how "companies" like PanMedia haven't been shut down by the authorities or by companies whose product has been pirated, and how online retailers like HK Flix are allowed to carry products that are obviously copied from legitimate releases? Anyone know or have a theory?

If I had to guess (based on the music industry as an example), no companies have "thrown the necessary money" at the problem to make it go away. In the early to mid 90s, it was easy to find bootlegged music CDs in the U.S. in larger cities like New York. One day the RIAA got involved, "importers" had their products seized and the most flagrant violators got jail time. While it hasn't eliminated bootlegging, it cut down the traffic considerably.

Would it really be that tough for someone like Celestial to shut down PanMedia for stealing their prints and adding English dubs to it?

True and the site mentions it but a suprising ammount of films that claim coding are actually not coded. I have a DVD player that plays PAL but is not region coded or hackable. I like the player as its a top end player that displays the picture perfectly (and anamorphic conversion). One idea I guess is I could just rip the DVD drop the region and maybe german audio and be able to play it on my top end dvd player in my room. However, I have a Cyberhome that plays all region and player so its a bit of a non issue, just being a qauality whore :) .

a) Compare cuts
b) insert Cut Scenes into the Print
c) Dub English, German, Cantonese, Mandarin to the composite Print
d) time a complete Subtitle Script for the Movie
e) write the Subtitles
f) Master the complete Print with Scenes re-inserted for DVD-Authoring
g) Master the German Trailer
h) now Author the DVD
i) scan lots of Pictures of the Movie for a good-looking Menu and a Photo Gallery
j) set Chapter Stops for the movie
k) finish the DVD Authoring
l) design a good-looing Cover so People get aware of the Movie
m) get the whole Thing to the Pressing Plant
n) shrinkwrap it after all's pressed
o) is THAT Stupid enough for not giving an exact Date for you? start thinking before you call people "stupid".

Linn and Mark no wonder you liked the Black Panther sleeve artwork plus that first sleeve of Mystagogue its the original poster artwork for these films released in theatres in most regions.I'm crazy about these designs and was very pissed off when Celestial couldn't offer us a dual sided sleeve of the Shaw classics ie the new design on one side and the original poster artwork on the other instead of wasting money,time and effort,duplicating the same new (sometimes awful) designs on a slipcase.Vengeance Video uses the original artwork when available.I bought their Queen Boxer release just for the original poster artwork then threw the damn dvd in the bin because it is the most atrocious dvd release ever stocked in major high street stores.I real disgrace.Anyway you win some you lose some.I'll definitely be patronizing NEW.Well done to them keep it up.Kudos Spannick:hat

Recieved my New german dvd's Mystagogue and The Victim. The cases are awesome, I'm very impressed. I havent had a chance to watch them yet but I briefly compared my world video dvd of Mystagogue to the New and the New dvd blows it away. The world video dvd looks like blurry vhs tape quality. If you own the world dvd and you like the movie do yourself a favor and get the german dvd, you will be glad you did.
