Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris? Count me in. I can only hope that Zelleweger's character falls in a well in the first 5 minutes. Another COLD MOUNTAIN performance from her is something this world does not need.

It's been years since i've seen a great western and I want one badly, badly enough that i've tried to talk myself into beliving that 3:10 to Yuma was great, but I could only see it as better than average. This movie does look good minus Renee Zellwegger

She is one of the most annoying actors I have ever seen, and i'm with you. I hope she doesn't fubar this movie, because the trailer did look really good, she also wasn't really in the trailer. And Jeremy Irons as the bad guy, this movie should be really good.

I've seen APPALOOSA and it's a real western. Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen are great. Jeremy Irons is superb as the main villain. Also turning up in a gunslinger role is Lance Henriksen. It doesn't get better than this. Renee Zellweger plays quite an interesting character. There's more to her than meets the eye and as the film progressed, I realized why she was cast. If they'd cast, say, Jennifer Connelly, who we're all in love with anyhow, it would have been harder to accept the things we learn about her character. There's also the question of what exactly do the two heroes see in Zellweger, a question we're supposed to ask. If they'd cast Connelly, there'd be no shred of doubt about what they see in her, which would have diminished the drama somewhat.
It was shot in New Mexico, so it looks like a real western, too. I have to say I like it better than last year's 3:10 TO YUMA and THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD BOB FORD, both of which were interesting movies and well worth seeing (although JESSE JAMES should have been an hour shorter). YUMA was more exciting and action-packed than APPALOOSA, but I find Harris' and Mortensen to be much more interesting actors than Bale and Crowe and their characters more compelling.

Sad to say, this film kinda sucked.
Renee Zellweger totally ruins what might have otherwise been a decent little Western. I seriously wanted to reach into the screen and squeeze her head like a pimple every time she appeared. She played such a psychotic hosebeast of a character, I was disgusted at the supposed hero of the piece for wanting to be with her.

For a Western, it didn't have the action I'd hoped for.
But I loved the characters and the dialogue and the repartee. The humor was dry and subtle.
Was it as good as Open Range? No. But I really enjoyed it. Need to see it again as a matter of fact.

The Viggo-Harris bromance was all good until Renee stuck her bunched up little face into things.:squigglemouth:

I thought it was fine, but if a hand had mysteriously reached into the tv and squeezed her head like a pimple every time she appeared, I would have been more than ok with that.
