I just watched the new grindhouse releasing dvd. Imo it's the perfect mix of gore and creepiness. I think I might even have nightmares from this one!!

Indeed "The Beyond" is very creepy and gory. IMO it Fulci's best horror flick. Great atmosphere and set pieces as well. But its also incredibly incoherant & campy, like alot of his films. Still alot of fun to watch. Another Italian master of style over substance. I wouldnt mention it as a top 5 GOAT, maybe in a top 5 of greatest Italian Horror.

I thought the Beyond was very trippy but it was kinda cheesy in parts. However, I may need to seeit again to refresh the memory.

Greatest horror movie, I don't think so... Fulci's best, hell yeah! A new DVD release you say? How is it?

It's supposed to be the same print as the previous Grindhouse Releasing/Anchor Bay release. Only difference is a one or two different extras. The other extras are the same as before. PIECES is the one to get that was just released from GR.
I haven't watched THE BEYOND in a long time but for me, I don't recall anything being cheesy about it other than it being a product of its time ie some of the effects being unconvincing (the tarantula attack). The bit with Warbeck attempting to load his gun from the barrel was an intentional joke on his part. He didn't think they'd actually use the take but apparently, they didn't notice.
The first time I saw it was on tape under the 7 DOORS OF DEATH moniker. Most all the gore was cut from it, a different opening credits scene and music. The box art on the Thriller Video case was awesome and contained fake blurbs from Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel who claimed they never even saw the movie.

Now that's a cover. It's roughly the one I had on my vhs, probably the same as Venoms5. Just saw the new cover and it is pretty ugly...

No, the cover for Thriller Video's VHS of 7 DOORS OF DEATH was done in a very EC/CREEPSHOW style artistic interpretation. An excellent design for box art. I wish I still had those tapes just for the box art.

Fulci made a lot of great movies, this is not his best, but his goriest (except Nightmare Concert, which is just gore).
I think House by the Cemetary was creepier, Don't torture a duckling had a better story, New York Ripper was more Badass...

I never got the hype. Some good bits (anything with the blind girl) and not so good bits (the lame toy spider attack). At his worst, Fulci was always so obvious and staid in terms of his direction and tone- I'm thinking of Beyond, House by the Cemetery, Manhattan Baby, and the like.
I far prefer his films where he doesnt let that overt sluggishness bog down his films- Dont Torture a Duckling, Zombie, and the wacked out insanity of New York Ripper.

I think "The Beyond" is his best "Horror" film. His Giallo's like "Dont Torture A Duckling" & "A Lizard In A Woman's Skin" are much better films imo.

I'll have to check those movies out. Not a big horror fan but I do enjoy them. There are so many sub genres in horror that its hard to pick the very best.
I've always liked zombie movies and movies based on the occult and supernatural. From the horror movies I have watched, my all time favorite is Evil Dead 2.

The Beyond is a great flick, but the finale in the hospital spoils this one for me a bit. (Though what comes after that is one of the best horror endings I've seen...)
Still, I've always preferred House by the Cemetery. That is (for me) Fulci at his best.
