Hi all,

I just joined here.
I am a big martial arts film fan. I collect DVDs, of the classic Chinese films, as well as Japanese genres too.

I had a technical question and was told this was a good place to post it.

I'm not a DVD tech, not sure how it all works, but this left me a little baffled.

But I came across a "glitch" that I'd never had before, and it makes me wonder if this could be just my copy, or is it likely they all are like this.
I'm a frustrated perfectionist, and not sure if I want to take it back, if it's likely they all are like this, as well as it being a very slight, not even sure what to call it, mess up?, not sure if it's worth the bother to return it.

It's on the newest US Bruce Lee set, called Ultimate Collection. It has a blueish cover, and 5 movies in slimline cases with Fortune Star on the spines.
The movie is "The Big Boss". I bought this set 2, hmm, maybe 3 weeks ago.

I was watching the English dubbed audio option, it has 2, the DTS would not play on my setup, so I was playing the 1st and default one.
At about 25:55 in, there is a slight audio mix up, where one of the charaters dub voice, is being mixed up with another character. It lasts a few seconds, and it was noticable right off to me. This disc also has 2 different Chinese audio tracks, and I watched the scene with those too, and they both played fine. So it has a very short audio "glitch" only on the 1:English audio track. The visual of the scene is fine, and the other audio options are fine.

So, while it may seem trivial, I am wondering if something like this, is more than likely something that is on the source developed, and is on them all? Or could this be a single defect just on my disc?

It kinda bugs me, and I'm not sure if I want to try and exchange it, or just say to heck with it. I think I'm just gonna live with it.

I did want to say, the picture quality here is very good. I did not have the Master Collection, so I can't compare it with that, but I do have the GoodTimesDVD of it, and while that picture is not "good", it's decent and watchable, but I was really let down with the English audio track on The Big Boss, in the Ultimate Collection, so much hiss. The English audio on the GoodTimesDVD is way better. Couldn't they have gotten a better dub audio track?

im guessing it just depends on what transfer or source they got the track from, and not necissarily the fault of fortune star...well i mean ignorance instead of ineptitude if you know what i mean

other than that, how did you dig the set?

Hi,

Yeah, I guess I just mainly wondered if they are all like that, or I drew the bad one?

I really have not watched the whole set. Before I bought it, I had/have the GoodTimes DVDs of Fist Of Fury and The Chinese Connection. I watched both these a few times. Not bad quality, and they are anamorphic widescreen enhanced for widescreen TVs. And then I had/have the Master Collection releases of Return of the Dragon, and Game Of Death, which I watched.

So, I haven't watched all the new Ultimate Collection discs. I only watched The Big Boss so far, which not having seen the Master Collection disc, I think it has a great looking picture, very clear, and way better than the GoodTimesDVD I have. I did think the English dub audio for The Big Boss in the Ultimate Collection though, was very bad, as it has a lot of noise/hiss. It's not like that on the GoodTimesDVD at all. So, it does have a great picture to me, but the English track is not so good. Now it does have 2 different Chinese audio tracks, and the interesting thing is they have different music. I haven't watched the movie with each audio track fully, but I switched it back and forth a few times. It looks to me, that audio track 4 is the original audio.

So, as a critique, as the "Ultimate" collection, they sure could have gotten a better English audio track. It's full of noise and hiss, and then it has the little glitch. BUT, to me, it has a great picture, and the 2 extra Chinese audio tracks is a nice extra.

Actually, this is my favorite Bruce Lee movie, with Return/Way Of the Dragon my 2nd.

I also want to see Game Of Death II. I know it's a post-Bruce-sploitation film, but I have never seen it.

I'll eventually get to see them all in this set. Overall I REALLY like Fortune Star, and think they have great quality. I have a few of their Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung DVDs.

I guess in a few years we'll get The Supreme Collection, with a better English audio track.

What's you review of the set, if you have it?

Welcome to the world of incomplete features for DVD releases. Enjoy the set now, there will be more relesed in the future. I own several sets which I posted here at Bruce Lee Central. Not one has everything, and each have it's strong points.

Is it when James Tien talks to the factory manager? Because I seem to recall a glitch like that on a tape I saw many years ago. I think it's inherent in the soundtrack used and not unique to the box set.
