View Full Version : Who, if anyone, owns the rights to these Jet Li movies?
The Running Man

Dragon Fight
Last Hero in China
Kung Fu Cult Master
I've heard of almost every single other Jet Li film being picked up except those three (and if you exclude the horrible EP VHS release from Eastern Heroes US release of Last Hero In China called "Deadly Hero in China").
So has those three ever been picked up for US release by anyone?
If not, I hope BCI will.

Dragon Fight is being sat on by Warner I believe (who won't sell or release the film).
Would be nice to get proper releases of these movies indeed.

Dragon Fight sits in the Warner Brothers vault, along with a lot of other classic HK films including "Pedicab Driver"....and Warners seem unwilling to release them, license them to anyone else, or do anything about the blatent bootlegging of so many of them
Very frustrating

Correct.
The French DVD has the best video quality of 'Last Hero In China' for the most part, but this comparison (http://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2685) reveals a colour difference in one of the shots. I could do with a better set of subtitles and a new transfer.
'Kung Fu Cult Master' could do with new subtitles.
A legit 'Dragon Fight' with a new transfer and subtitles would be nice.

Oh yes, Dragon Fight with Warner Brothers. Totally forgot about that one thanks. :)
My reason for asking this is not because I am in need of them for my collection. I'm just curious as to who owns Last Hero in China and Kung Fu Cult Master here in the US. Rather odd that no one has bought them or at least I haven't heard that they were. If they have been picked up, then why no official US release after so long?

There is a Thai DVD of Dragon Fight, it's wide and has English subs. I've had it for months, anybody wants one then let me know :) I'll try to find it and do some screencaps next week...

Details would be cool :).
Yea it is interesting that Last Hero in China has not been picked up by anyone in either US or UK, as its supposed to be a very good kung fu comedy and its quite rare for Jet Li to star in those
you can get the R0 DVD from cdwow for £4

Warners bought a lot of Hong Kong movies in the mid 90's including "Pedicab Driver', "Dragon Fight" etc and sadly seem to have no interest in doing anything with them, releasing them, sub licensing them or chasing the various boots that appear of some of them...when we screened "Pedicab Driver" in LA a few years back with Sammo in attendence, they were less than helpful to say the least
I think at Teako's site, there was a list of all the titles Warner owns...some very strong titles there which sit in the vault

I have Dragon Fight on DVD, but it has no subtitles. It was included in this huge box set of nearly every Stephen Chow movie made.
I also have Kung Fu Cult Master on VCD - I believe my brother picked it up in Beijing.
On a side note, I think it was released on DVD in the US as "Evil Cult" (it is since out of print). Netflix also seems to be renting it?

Wow, I need to read these forums like everyday. Today, I was at the mall (Mall of America) and picked up Dragon Fight (widescreen, English dub). The company is HK Video (Taiwan) Co. Underneath the company name is a Singapore address complete with phone and fax #'s. All the text on the cover is in English. The running time is 90 mins (IMDB gives an Argentinian running time of 96 min).
So what the hell did I find today? :o

Yes that DVD was put out by Pan Media, the guys that copied Celestials remastered Shaw prints and slapped English dubs on them. That address they put on the back of the case with the singapore address is a phoney I believe....

Running Man,
Buena Vista Hme Enertainment owns the North American distribution rights for THE LAST HERO IN CHINA. I just ordered the HK version [Universe] from DDDHouse.com-they will ship it to you:
http://www.dddhouse.com/v3/product_details.php?ProductID=478
I don't know who owns North American distribution rights for KUNG FU CULT MASTER, but again, DDDHouse.com has it:

If Buena Vista owned the 'Last Hero In China' rights, then it's likely Navarre will now.
Possibly the same for 'Kung Fu Cult Master'.

I tend to see Last Hero in China used in a lot of those crappy Jet Li 4 packs you can get at Best Buy and other places. My guess is that Last Hero in China is actually a public domain title. The same goes for Kung Fu Cult Master and just about any Hong Kong film you can get on a billion cheap DVDs at Best Buy and other places.
I'm probably wrong though.

Yes, you are wrong :quiet:
Those crappy/cheap DVD sets you see at Best Buy are all bootlegs.

Is there another name for those discs? You would think if they were legitimate bootlegs, those companies would have been shut down. I'm really interested in learning more about this practice.
EDIT: So I found an old thread about this very topic and it was very informative. Essentially these films are out and out real bootlegs. Nothing more, nothing less. It's so very odd.

Especially start reading when the person starts defending bootlegs. The response is good.
