The running time is listed on the case as being 105 mins...However, just had a quick flick through and it's only 79 mins long, WTF??

Fortune Star gave HKL a butchered Cantonese edition that's missing around 40 mins of footage. Avoid.

it is the length of the Cantonese version, but without the Cantonese soundtrack and instead: the abridged Mandarin and English soundtracks :) .

Then they shouldn't advertise it on the case as being 105 mins....bastards.
I wonder if I'd get my money back if I took it back to the shop and explained :\

Most of these films are, like their titles, never accurately listed on the running times. They can be off from 1 minute to 15 minutes at times.

You're entitled as the packaging is misleading.
Most shops don't ask too many questions... all they want to know really is if it's defective so they can resell it or not?

HKL actually did the opposite on the shaolin wooden men disk where the packaging says its 90 mins but the film is about 103 mins.
You'd think somebody would check these things out before the disks hit the shops, i know its only a small detail but it just seems unprofessional & something that could easily have been avoided

105 min was the running time of the old UK Eastern Heroes DVD. That version was missing all the pre-credits scene - and all of Lo Wei's performance! - the scene at the Japanese banquet prior to Chen Sing's entrance, and Jackie being treated at the hospital

I'll have to check the version I have when I get back, and see what the running time is. I'll let you know. ;)

The Columbia disc is the best. Anamorphic, OAR, Mandarin and English mono with subtitles (well dubtitles, but we can't win everything...), and its more or less uncut

I like this movie alot, but the US Columbia DVD has not a great picture. It is widescreen, but was expecting better from them.

Columbia just took what was given to them. Their Lo Wei releases were just old tape and beta masters.

No. The uncut version simiarily fails to tell us who tips the Japanese off to the rebel at the docks OR who tips off the Japanese to the fact that there are rebels in Jing Wu.
And for that matter, the rebels do precisely FUCK ALL in the entire film, they just sit in an attic gasbagging.

What footage is missing from the HKL version? And what version is best for the original uncut mandarin version, I also read that the Sony/Columbia Tristar is slightly cut?
And which version have these scenes (taken from earlier in this thread): pre-credits scene - and all of Lo Wei's performance! - the scene at the Japanese banquet prior to Chen Sing's entrance, and Jackie being treated at the hospital ??
The version for this movie are confusing as hell..

Aside from the credits sequence being cut down a bit (elimiating some title cards) the Columbia is uncut. Its the only dvd of the film worth buying.
