I dont think I have read so many mixed reviews for a film as I have for John Woo's "Red Cliff". People either really loved it, or absolutely hated it! I have held off buying it because of this. I know its only the first half of the film, but is it worth dropping $20 of my hard earned money on?

Mixed? As for me, I don't know if it is a great film or just a very good film; won't know until I get to see the second part. Either way, I think it is absoloutly worth $20, pick it up I doubt you'll be disappointed.

There is action, but not really kung fu. But, Tony Leung gets to kick some ass in the battle scenes, so there are weapons as well as hand to hand combat. This movie is mostly character driven, so if you do watch this, don't do it for the action, although the action scenes are enjoyable.

I genuinely thought it was his best film since Hard-Boiled. I really don't want to give into the "back on his home turf" crap, but it seems to have played out that way. I enjoyed Hard Target and especially Face/Off, but they pale in comparison to his HK classics. It belongs in his top 5, I think. For reference, I will say my idea of his five best, in no order: Hard-Boiled, The Killer, Bullet in the Head, Better Tomorrow and Red Cliff.

I saw Part 1 last weekend and I thoroughly enjoyed the action. It was a combination of wire-fu and more battle sequences. They were done by Zhang Jizhan (battle) and Corey Yuen & Dion Lam (wire stunt). I am still anticipating seeing Part 2, might be getting a copy when it is out :) I hope so!!!

The acting was great...my favorite character is Hu Jun's Zhao Yun. His opening battle was enjoyable and then, he showed he is one of the most loyal warriors in Liu Bei's ranks.

Part 2 is good as well, it runs a bit slow and the plot drifts for about 30 minutes, but then it takes off and I was blown away especially by the ending. These are truly great movies.

Whenever you guys get a chance to watch the sequel do it and don't put it off, you'll love it.

Yeah, that final big battle scene in Part 2 didn't disappoint. It must be due out on HK dvd pretty soon :D

... why some people cannot just enjoy a film for what it is... Entertainment!

I just finished viewing Red Cliff pt one, and immediately ordered pt 2. I thought the film was very good, and the action was very adequate for the period, and type of film it is. The perfomances were all respectable and I'm certain the climax will deliver the goods.
Takashi Kaneshiro is my boy! I enjoy quite a few of his roles.

I cannot believe I waited so long to view pt.2. One of the best films I've purchased in a long time.

Just heard that in the UK the cinema release is, as was thought, going to be the cut down 150 min version of the two films...shameful...Not sure about the USA but probably the same.
Great films and worth buying the uncut HK dvds

Yeah, I'll just stick with my HK dvds. I read that Magnolia plans to release the combined version in US theatres, with the uncut divided films available through Video on Demand and DVD.
