All his older titles are more about martial arts than guns and war. Check out THE OCTAGON, GOOD GUYS WEAR BLACK, and SILENT RAGE.

I dunno, I think its REALLY stretching it to call Good Guys Wear Black a martial arts film

The DVD calls it "a martial arts classic" but its mostly slow chases and lots of dull political talk

Good Guys Wear Black might help if suffering from insomnia.Only OK scene is exploding of plane and short fight after that.

Slaughter in san francisco is good,it does not hurt movie norris ain`t lead star.Octagon too.Stay away from lone wolf mcquade, breaker breaker and a force of one.

His old movies have something in common with Bruce Lee flicks, loads of henchmen stand still waiting to be kicked or punched(he has very swift backround kick).

Of his action movies at least Missing in Actions,Delta force#2 and invasion usa make enjoyable viewing experience.Me recalls hero and the terror was not bad either.

So The Octagon, Eye For And Eye, Forced Vengeance, and Silent Rage seem to be the "good list". I like his military stuff, but I was looking for some of his older ones hoping they would be like his performance in Way of the Dragon. So I will check these out, thanks.

I liked Lone Wolf McQuade, it had a spaghetti western feel to it and the fight between Chuck and Carradine was surprisingly good, the best Carradine has ever looked in a fight imo.

Well even the gun and war type movies had martial arts. Delta Force and Delta Force 2 has a lot of roundhouse kicks and in the first one he really beats the shit of Robert Forester. Hell, same thing happened in Invasion USA, Richard Lynch, said despite having a stunt double he still had a bunch of bruises. In that case its not that Chuck was being a dick or something (or the Richard was claiming it), just to get good impact, you often have to make contact.

Still I would say Slaughter in San Fransisco is his more Hong Kong one since it was a Golden Harvest film.

Well, it did have a score from Francesco De Masi, which always helps :)

Hey, wasn't there a lot of hand-to-hand stuff in one of the MISSING IN ACTION movies? I think it might have been part 2. I haven't seen these since they were first released.

well everyone has said it, but the octagon is really one of his best...if not one of the best american MA films of the 80's. anything with Lee Van Cleef is also an added bonus. LVC is the man!

I hope you guys are being sarcastic, a movie about a Dog companion and a Indiana Jones rip off...to each their own I guess. I know Chuck didnt have the greatest run, but he was great in Way of the Dragon and I just wanted to check out some of his older HK style films.

The Octagon and Forced Vengeance are my favorite marital arts-based Chuck films, but Invasion USA and Lone Wolf McQuade are good "shoot em' up" action films with some obligatory karate thrown in. I read somewhere that the central character in Invasion USA (swamp-dwelling ex agent badass) was supposed to be the central character in Avenging Force, but they went with Michael Dudikoff for it. Too bad. Chuck could have had his own James Bond/Indiana Jones type character.

An honorable mention is The Cutter where Chuck squares off against Daniel Bernhardt

I saw The Octagon and Forced Vengeance a couple hundred times when I was a kid, I also have a special place for the Lone Wolf McQuade movie though I'm sure it's pretty bad as I haven't seen it for a while. Chuck was no Choreographer, he had a blinding spin kick and that's about it, still I'll always love these movies, I need to revisit them.

Avenging Force was a prequel to Invasion USA.

Dudikoff was playing a younger version of Chuck's character.

I watched An Eye for An Eye today and is was good. Not as much fighting as I would have liked but Chuck had no beard and it was cool. Next Im planning to watch the Octagon and will tell you what I think.

Speaking of which, did Avenging Force ever get a Region 1 DVD release? His battle with the faceless ninja was one of my favorite battles when I was a lad. That guy was straight out of an Eric Lustbader novel!

No. But it was released in the UK and across Europe (R2 territories) in an open matte (1.33) version. The Australian disc is also open matte despite falsely claiming anamophic widescreen (1.78) on the cover.

I am glad Bamboo spear mentioned the author Eric Van Lustbader as Chuck Norris' "The Octagon" draws parallels with Lusbader's masterpiece book "The Ninja".I think the David Bradley / Mark Dacascos flick "American Samurai" also borrows from this book.

Yeah, everytime I watch Revenge of the Ninja, I can't help but think of Saigo storming the building at the end of The Ninja. Man, that book takes me back to 11th grade!

I agree;superb book.Quite historically relevant as well.Just don't understand why the book itself was not adapted into a movie of it's own rather than just borrow bits off it.Maybe Hollywood couldn't quite figure out the philosophical concept at the time which could affect marketing but handled well " The Ninja " would have been one hell of a movie.Saigo rules.

Okay here are my favorite Norris flicks:

Breaker! Breaker! - I'm sorry but I have a soft spot for those old trucker movies thanks to Smokey and the Bandit.
A Force of One - Norris vs. Bill Wallace. Not bad for an American MA film.
The Octagon - awesome ninja film with Norris

Honorable mention only for the funniest look in a fight scene Ive ever seen:
Sidekicks - when Norris does the slow motion jumping side kick and the look on Joe Piscopo's face before the BAM! is definitely priceless LOL

Chuck Norris is the man hands down that stare and beard speaks for itself.. the man is fearless lol,. nobody can punch anyone in the face like chuck norris, I like the last two seasons of Walker Texas Ranger, those punch sound effects won me over lol I love it, His latest Walker Texas Ranger movie that he did was technically his last movie to date it was just released before "The Cutter" which was filmed in 2003 . Walker Texas Ranger :Trial by Fire was in 2005, he has a good up to date type fight scene in that movie in a restaurant with a bald asian guy that kinda looks like a shaved lion or a snake, but it was short but cool.

Lone Wolf McQuade is crazy awesome. Caine and Chakotay from Star Trek Voyager? Sign me up! I also have a soft spot for The Octagon. To this day I can't walk into a dark, unfamiliar room without Chuck's faux whisper of "Ninjas! There are ninjas here!" in my head. You know what? I'd rather watch Sidekicks than most kid-aimed martial arts flicks (3 Ninjas, Surf Ninjas, Karate Kid... although I haven't seen the new one). I also really like Breaker, Breaker, but I have a soft spot for late '70s trucker films, as almost anyone who was in elementary school in the late '70s should.

I can't remember if I like Good Guys Wear Black or not... I bet I do.

Lone Wolf McQuade. Why because it has Chuck Norris Vs David Carradine aka Walker Texas Ranger vs Kwai chang caine.

The Hitman. I know it's cheesy but i enjoyed that movie from it's cool one liners, Chuck even knocking out that redneck.
