View Full Version : A little ominous with Dragon Dynasty when ....

....you click on the Future Releases button in the Dragon Dynasty website and you get nothing. They had the Jet Li starrer "Fong Sai Yuk" as an upcoming release previously and that has disappeared. On the HKFlix site which was previously pretty good in listing future DD releases, all the releases look like they are in limbo now.
I know people had their complaints about them with the recent release "The Enforcer" being their worst (lacking a Mandarin or Cantonese soundtrack) offender but now it looks like we won't have any alternative at all. I was hoping they would last until they at least released "half decent" versions of "A Better Tomorrow" trilogy or "The Killer". :(
I hope they dont disappear like HKL did, but I have heard lots of complaints about quite a few of their releases, which is bad for any DVD company

DD might not be in so bad a shape after all as I see that Bey Logan has updated his blog (on Corey Yuen) on the DD site with a comment that DD's upcoming releases will include Fong Sai-Yuk 1 and 2 and Bodyguard from Beijing. Then again there does seem to be a disconnect between Bey's intentions and what DD actually does with the releases.
Unfortunately it does seem if Dimension had prior rights to a film or had released it previously, that it is the 'americanized' version with the edits that gets into the DD releases. They don't seem able or willing to go back for the original version though they did release the longer version of one of the first two Police Story movies.
Now if they can get around to releasing the "A Better Tomorrow" Trilogy or the ultimate edition of "The Killer", I will be happy.

I've been wandering what happened to DD myself lately. They don't even have a forum on their site! How lame is that? Their fans can't even discuss their releases!
They've been really dodgy with their releases. I've loved their classic releases! The transfers are amazing! I just hope they'll get the chance to release more before they fold.

Bey told me that the bootleggers and competitors were using the DD roster of "upcoming releases" to rush out their own inferior BS versions. This flooded the market with these titles, which were then bought up by unsuspecting (and less informed) fans, thereby destroying (or at least putting a serious dent in) DD's customer potential.
Remember the debate on another thread about whether or not buying boots from Panmedia really has a negative effect on companies putting out legit releases? Well, IT DOES.

Only idiots (that will remain nameless) don't believe this!!

That sucks! So does Bey think DD is done for? I've bought every classic release they've had. And I wish they release more! There are a ton of others that i'd love to see remastered.
Well i hope so but i hope their titles get released over to UK quicker...and they would need to improve their releases so they dont hav technical faults

He told me that a long time ago. When the site for DD first came on it started having a short list of upcoming titles. After a 3 or 4 months I was surprised to find that theywere only listing "coming soon" titles that were due within a few weeks. I wrote and asked if I should be worried, and Bey assured me that they were "doing fine, but due to..." see what I wrote above. So I don't know about their current state- financially or otherwise. But I'm sure the lack of listing soon-to-be-released stuff is for the same reason as before. Nothing has changed in that regard.
As an example: on another thread a new member asked if other people also had trouble finding the Magnet release of CHOCOLATE in stores. I replied that I'd encountered the same problem. Yet, I could go to F.Y.E. right now and buy a boot of it. WTF? :o

I bought the DD versions of Fist of Legend and Hard Boiled and all I can say is that I am truly disappointed in the "remastering", if you can call it that. I noticed that Fist of Legend is full of freeze frames to correct whatever film flaw existed instead of fixing it the right way. I also noticed that there was still a lot of dirt throughout.
As for Hard Boiled, that was a little better but there's a couple of scenes where they could've fixed some scratches easily. And still there was a lot of dirt.
I can appreciate what DD is trying to do but I would hoped that they put better effort into truly remastering their catalogue of titles.

Well Dragon Dynasty updated their website with The Legend of Fong Sai-Yuk with a release date of 5/26/2009.
I think Dragon Dynasty needs to just release most of the movies from their cataloge without any extras, just the movie with original language and maybe an original trailer, or a Bey Logan commentary since he works for them it should be cheaper than getting interviews or traveling to sites seen in the films. They could release them for between 10 to 15 bucks. I'm sure it's been stated here before.
Either way I hope they can weather the storm to at least get some more Shaw Brothers titles out.

I love DD, but it hard for me to find their DVDs now that circuit city is gone. And Best Buy in my neighborhood has such a limited selection. So, if it wasn't for online shopping, I would have close to nothing. So, my question is, what is wrong with this picture?

Thank God they haven't closed up shop! I was worried big time for a second. We need to all support DD and what Bey's trying to do. I know some people have some problems. But if it wasn't for Bey, we wouldn't be getting jack. I'm sure he's trying to Lobby for the release of as many Shaws as he can. And i'm hopping to see tons of others!
I'd like DD to release Painted Faces and Pedicab Driver most of all. Of the 2, Painted Faces is more likely.

Painted Faces has next-to-zero marketing appeal for an action outfit like DD.
You've almost as much chance of them putting out Rouge.
An art label would provide a more suitable home.
how about having DD try to release some of their promised shaw bros titles.
