What's wrong with the Columbia/Tri-Star version? I remember it looking decent and being letterboxed. No?

What about the remastered boxset from joy sales?

The Hong Kong Legends version is very good quality...its from the ultrabit range so no extras.

Yeah the HKL version is pretty good. Here's a review of the dvd:

HKL:

GOOD:

Re-translated English subtitles (Columbia is dubtitled).
Super-bit 2:35:1 remastered anamorphic video (Columbia looks quite inferior).
Original Cantonese mono (Columbia has this too, but just saying incase people wonder if there's any bullshit 5.1 involvement).

NOT-SO-GOOD:

Freeze-framed shot of Lung on his knees at the end instead of it running normally (would affect all FS sub-licensed DVDs).
No English mono.

(Columbia doesn't have these two problems)

------

Just whilst I'm here, the original English/Chinese credits (in red) have probably only surfaced on a VHS - I was sent captures of them. Any STAR TV sub-licensed product (on VCD/DVD) will likely all have these new white credits (including HKL's DVD). Columbia's DVD has the original export English credits.

It will be interesting to see what Dragon Dynasty could do with it. In order to beat the HKL DVD, they could:

1) Obtain the original red English/Chinese credits.
2) Re-instate the few seconds of footage within the final minute - preferably remastered.
3) Include the original English dub in mono.

I'd recommend them re-translating the English subtitles, as they haven't been on Chinese movies. In terms of extras, they could get the Japanese trailer that's on the Eastern Heroes DVD, the original Cantonese trailer, maybe some export trailers/credit sequences (even branching them into the movie). Other stuff would be a few interviews, etc. Just PLEASE, no lame artwork!

I didn't like this movie, but I have got the Eastern Heroes and Columbia Tri-Star DVDs.

In short HKL DVD is best, but keep onto your Columbia for the old English dub if you want it

Dragon Dynasty could also attempt to source the footage used for Fearless Hyena 2 that was deleted from the first film (Dean Shek's cameo etc). It might be easier than sitting through FH2, imo.

You could be right;)!

If anything, they might do a 'Royal Tramp' and box the two together. I'm sure very few would be interested in the sequel. If anyone wants to see it, the Columbia and IVL DVDs are there.

I've got the HKL version & i'm pretty sure it has the full ending with Jackie pushing his teacher in the cart after the final fight.

A series of repeated frames play when he's on his knees.

Yes. Should have said that despite the repeated frames covering the section where Lung is on his knees, the following scene is there where he pushes the cart.

Sorry, I don't understand what is wrong with the ending? After the final fight jackie drops to his knees & then the scene cuts to him pushing unicorn, as I remember the movie always ends like this - what is different?

After Lung kills Yam Sai Kwoon's character, he drops to his knees, but apparently it's a set of repeated frames covering up that take (with the audio still playing) until the next scene with the cart (which plays normally).

Might have been damage FS couldn't/wouldn't fix.

I've never noticed anything out of the ordinary with this scene & it seems to flow naturally, i've owned this movie on vhs, eastern heroes dvd & hkl dvd & they all seem to finish the same.

HKL's dub had tons of new sound FX. Columbias is original.

Both columbia and HKL have sync problems on their Cantonese mono tracks. Columbia loops the dialogue in one shot, so the three idiots now say Jackie's lines. HKL's runs OOS all the way through the film.

I have the Columbia Tristar DVD, and I think it's OK.

Though some of these older US Chan DVDs are not so hot, Project A being one.
