View Full Version : Why can't cable have a martial arts movie block?!

So i'm confused. With all these cable channels out there, there isn't one network with the balls to have a kick ass move night, or late night block, or saturday afternoon block of martial arts movies? Why isn't this possible?

This would seem like its right up Vs. or Spike TV's alley. Why couldn't this happen? I'm sure the licensing fee's for old kung fu films isn't too much. It'd be cool to have a sort of [Adult Swing] style block of martial arts movies late at night on one of these channels. That way we can see some of the old classics.

Am i just naive? I mean, those networks have to fill their time with something.

Spike does this every so often

It'd be cool if it were a regular thing.

WEll there was that Blackbelt network that was supposed to green light a few years back. I think we just gotta admit that Kung Fu movies are turning into a niche market.

Try living in the UK... we almost never get any martial arts/HK action films on TV save the odd Jackie Chan repeat. :(

Kung fu is dead, face it folks. I'm in a really bad mood tonight so please forgive the negative feelings but apart from us few enthusiasts who really watches these films? Even the Chinese have given up on them.

But as we've learned, everything comes and goes in cycles.I'm sure at some point the heyday may come back, although not like before.Remember when period pieces were out in the '80's?Then Jet Li revived them in the 90's and all that started over again.

I agree. Its terrible. The TV channels have been swept by a wave of reality sewage.
"Movies4men" shows the odd bruceploitation flick.
In Fullscreen.
With more cuts added in on top of already cut versions.
Just awful.

I never see anything on TV out my way. Hopefully, that rogers deal comes to Quebec, too.

like 2 years ago one channel in sweden had asian theme movies like every saturday for 3 months. they showed the bl movies, john woo movies with cyf, and then a few jc movies. but all the movies were dubbed in english though. also before a channel called tv1000 classics showed some sb movies from time to time.

There is simply NO mainstream demand for it. Every channel is too busy pumping out 19 different "reality" train-wreck tv shows. It is a sad commentary on the state of our society.......the end is near my friends.

I totally agree. Here in the UK we get nothing apart from the odd Jackie chan movie like First strike or something. Over the years channel 4 put out some good movies like Armour of God, Wheels on Meals, Project A and also Prodigal Son that were all widescreen and original language but that was a long time ago. It's about time that we god some decent Kung Fu on the TV!! Come on!!!

No UK channel is interested in HK action anymore. Even the DVD market here has shriveled up almost completely.

I don't know why, but I was always under the assumption that the UK was huge for this genre. Kung fu flicks at the wal-mart and such:o. Was I wrong?

Here where I stay, there are no other fans, at least none I can find. When I look for kung fu movies, I get the same look I get when I stop to the bookstore and visit the poetry section, lol.

We dont have a Walmart in the UK...
There was a channel on satellite and cable that started showing eastern action called CNX, it showed stuff like the Lee films, a few Jackie Classics such as Police Story as well as more rare stuff like Burning Paradise (all subbed).
It wasnt getting the viewing figures so it was pulled....!!!...That amazes me , especially when you see the crap that is shown on tv these days...:S

When it was around, the International Channel used to have one every weekend. So did a local station for a very short period of time.

The closest thing to a block since then was "Five Scar Cinema" on the sports channel VS. It only showed US martial arts movies though like Bloodsport, American Ninja and Perfect Weapon though.

Now, one will appear on Comcast's On Demand free movie list now and then.
