Either STONER or THE TOURNAMENT?

I think both are Korean co-prouductions (with Golden Harvest).

Kim Ki-Ju, Hong Seong-Jung, and Hwang In-Sik appear in both.

Also Yang Wei, but I'm still not sure if he's Korean or Chinese? lol

Any comments, guys?

Hi Markgway, everyone

I think Yang Wei is Chinese. He was introduced as Chinese in title credit of Casanova Wong's Four Iron Men.

About Stoner or The Tournament

GH made many collaboration movies with Korea certainly. But I believe these are pure Hong Kong movies. Even if Korean actors are appearing.
The collaboration movies in Korea and Hong Kong were also included in the fake movies by Korean circumstances.

Hi Markgway, everyone

Cheers for that. I wasn't sure. He appeared in so many Korean-related films that it made me wonder. Now it's been cleared up. :)

OK. So I'm assuming Harvest took these Korean actors back with them to HK or Thailand in the case of The Tournament. Usually when there's more than one or two Koreans it's a co-production but obviously not in these cases. Thx.

The collaboration movies in Korea and Hong Kong were also included in the fake movies by Korean circumstances.

Sorry - not sure what you mean here?

>Sorry - not sure what you mean here?

OK, The cause was the special political situation of Korea. When collaboration movies were made, it seems that the production companies could import the more foreign films. The Korean government was restricting import of foreign films, but the Korean government permitted that.

Korean people (in at that time) wished for the fascinating foreign films. The foreign films were an important source of income for the production (distribution) companies. So the fake collaboration movies seem to have existed too.

I know English isn't your first language so I'm honestly not trying to give you a hard time.

Let me see if I've got what you're saying...

Korea restricted the import of foreign films so the Korean filmmakers opted to make co-productions with Hong Kong as a means of getting around the restrictions because co-productions were allowed.

That right?

It's the "fake" co-production bit I'm not sure about.

Are you saying that Korean distributors imported some pure Hong Kong movies under the pretence that they were co-productions? Only they weren't Korean at all?

If so - can you give me some examples of these "fake" co-productions?

I'm interested in what you have to say...

>Korea restricted the import of foreign films so the Korean filmmakers opted to make co-productions with Hong Kong as a means of getting around the restrictions because co-productions were allowed. That right?

Yes, that's right.

I wonder other Hong Kong side isn't remarking on a collaboration movie with Korea formally except for a big movie company like Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest.

Korean movie companies don't acknowledge fake collaboration movies. Of course, I don't think everything is fake collaboration movies. But Korean people know certain fake collaboration movies to have been made with Hong Kong.

There is an interesting article about fake collaboration movies. But this is written in Korean. I'm weak in English, so it isn't possible to translate successfully.
http://www.cine21.com/Article/article_view.php?mm=005004005&article_id=48584

The movies which I think fake collaboration movies.....

I believe "Ninja in The Dragon's Den" isn't a collaboration movie with Korea. (Rather it's introduced as a Domestic movie in Korea!) Japanese Toei Company Ltd and Sani-Chiba enterprise cooperated for "Ninja in The Dragon's Den". That's introduced in credit of Japanese release version. I think you know this fact.
BTW....I saw Korean version of "Ninja in The Dragon's Den". It's "Black Dragon's Last Warning". But that's a very fraudulent movie! Sanada Hiroyuki and Hwang Jang Lee aren't appearing on this version!! The appearance scenes of Sanada Hiroyuki were being replaced with a Korean actor Park Hee Jin. And Scenes taken in Korea have no relation to original scenes! Hwang Jang Lee aren't appearing so an ending scene of Korean version was taken additionally by Park Hee Jin and Park Dong Ryong in Korea.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDJ7ywdoKUE

And another...
I believe that "Invincible Armor" isn't also a formally collaboration movie. A Korean movie company re-take and edited an original movie like "Black Dragon...". Also some scenes taken in Korea have no relation to original scenes!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iM_nWT1XDM

"Dead & The Deadly" is also very doubtful. But it's registered by KMDB as a collaboration movie. Korean actors (Kwon Yong Mun and Ho Yang Mi) are appearing certainly and It's dubbed in Korean, but I believe this movie is Hong Kong movie clearly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cddZRCI5-1Q

This is a list of collaboration movies in KMDB. I think those movies were declared formally. But I think there are a lot more collaboration movies actually.
http://www.kmdb.or.kr/eng/category/category_list.asp?div_arr=A03&code_arr=32&code_nm_arr=Collaboration

It's regrettable that I'm not handed by English down to you well. Please permit me.
I'm studying a Korean movies at present. When there is some new information, please tell me again.

Formally collaboration movies of Shin Film (Korea) and Shaw Brothers.

1. The Bandits (Majeok)
2. Goddess of Mercy (Daepokgun)
3. Last Woman of Shang (Dalgi)
4. The Partisan Lovers (Yeo Majeok)
5. The Monkey Goes West (Seoyugi)

Fake collaboration movies with SB which I think.
I think those are purchased movies from Hong Kong.

1. Invincible Fist (Cheolsumujeong)
* I have not seen yet but seem to be replacing closeup of Hong Kong actor with closeup of a Korean actor by fraudulent method.

2. The Thunderbolt Fist (Saengsatu)
* It seems that the name of the director was camouflaged.
An actual director is Korean Jang Il-Ho.

3. Tiger Force (Yeosu 407ho)
* I saw this movie but I think a pure Korean movie. Hong Kong actors are appearing on this movie but Shin San-OK is doing the remark which makes think of ”fake” about this movie.

4. The Angry Guest (Heuggaeg)
* A subsidiary company of Shin Film (Anyan Campany)purchased this movie.
I saw this version but Japanese letter was replacing with Korean!

5. King Boxer (Cheol-in)
* Jeong Chang Hwa directed this movie but I think this movie was only purchased..

6. Killer Constable (Nomyeonggeom)
* It is very doubtful which additional photography of this movie was covenanted for formally.

7. Deadly Angels (Yeosintam)
8. The Gallantry King (Hanambyeolgog)
9. Lady With a Sword (Cheolnangja)
10. Valley of the Fangs (05407; A rang gok eui hyeol tub)
11. The Rescue (Ogjungdo)
12. Return to the 36th Chamber (Solim-yongmunbang)
* I think those SB movies were only purchased...

Formally collaboration movies with Golden Harvest which I know.
Because these movies were shown formally in The 9th Pusan International Film Festival as the collaboration movies with Hong Kong.

1. Countdown in Kung Fu (Yonghomun)
2. Duel to the Death (Saengsagyeol)
3. When Tae Kwon Do Strikes (Hueggwon)

A cooperation company in the Korean side is introduced in the Hong Kong version of GH.

1. The Devil's Treasure (Heug-yagoegaeg)

Pure Korean movies.

1. Cold Blooded Man (Naenghyeolja)
2. 108 Golden Killers (Hwaya)
3. Shaolin Drunken Monk (Chwipalgwon Gwangpalgwon)

I'd like to investigate other movies from now on.

Formally collaboration movies of Shin Film (Korea) and Show Broters.

Producer and/or director for these was Shin Sang-Ok.

Fake collaboration movies with SB which I think.
I think those are purchased movies from Hong Kong.

Wow. That's a lot more than I expected. The KOFA must be full of dodgy info. Mind you I'm not entirely sure I agree with all your suggestions...

1. Invincible Fist (Cheolsumujeong)
* I have not seen yet but seem to be replacing closeup of Hong Kong actor with closeup of a Korean actor by fraudulent method.

I agree that this one is fake. There's not a single Korean actor in the original credits.

2. The Thunderbolt Fist (Saengsatu)
* It seems that the name of the director was camouflaged.
An actual director is Korean Jang Il-Ho.

Lol. Why replace one Korean director with another? That said there are at least three Korean actors in this so it could be genuine... no?

3. Tiger Force (Yeosu 407ho)
* I saw this movie but I think as a pure Korean movie. Hong Kong actors are appearing on this movie but Shin San-OK is doing the remark which makes think of ”fake” about this movie.

The Chinese credits list a Chinese director and cast entirely. No Koreans, so you're probably right about it being fake.

4. The Angry Guest (Heuggaeg)
* A subsidiary company of Shin Film (Anyan Campany)purchased this movie.
I saw this version but Japanese letter was replacing with Korean!

There are Korean actors in the original version... Bang In-Ja, Kim Ki-Ju, Hong Seong-Jung... does that not make it a likely co-production?

5. King Boxer (Cheol-in)
* Jeong Chang Hwa supervised this movie but I think this movie was only purchased..

Korean actors in the original version... James Nam, Kim Ki-Ju, Jin Bong-Jin, Hong Seong-Jung... would so many Koreans be in a pure HK film?

6. Killer Constable (Nomyeonggeom)
* It is very doubtful which additional photography of this movie was covenanted for formally.

Kwon Yeong-Moon and Kim Se-Ok are the noteable Koreans in the original version. Doesn't the expanded ending used in Korea feature Chen Kuan-Tai? If the co-production was fake how could that be?

7. Deadly Angels (Yeosintam)

In original Chinese version: James Nam, Kim Jeong-Ran, Jang Jeong-Kuk

8. The Gallantry King (Hanambyeolgog)

Lee Ye-Min only, though I don't have a complete cast.

9. Lady With a Sword (Cheolnangja)

James Nam, Jin Bong-Jin, Lee Hae-Yong, Park Ji-Hyeon...

10. Valley of the Fangs (05407; A rang gok eui hyeol tub)

Director: Jeong Chang-Hwa. There are a few names in the cast that I don't recognise... so no idea if they're Koreans without further checking.

Is this actor Korean? http://hkmdb.com/db/people/view.mhtml?id=3559&display_set=eng
There's a Jin Ryang at the KOFA.

11. The Rescue (Ogjungdo)

Kim Ki-Ju, Hong Seong-Jung, Jin Bong-Jin...

12. Return to the 36th Chamber (Solim-yongmunbang)
* I think those SB movies were only purchased...

Kwon Yeong-Moon, Jang Il-Do, Kim Se-Ok

1. Cold Blooded Man (Naenghyeolja)

2. 108 Golden Killers (Hwaya)

Two movies spliced together? Original Chinese movie was called Rocky's Love Affairs with Chan Wai-Man.

3. Shaolin Drunken Monk (Chwipalgwon Gwangpalgwon)

Useful reading:

http://koreanfilm.org/piff04.html

Some excerpts:

"This year's nine selections are all movies co-produced by Hong Kong and Korea between the mid-60s and early 80s.

The Bamboo House of Dolls (1973)
The Black Hair (1974)
Duel to the Death (1982)
Hand of Death (1975)
The Last Woman of Shang (1964)
The Rescue (1971)
Schoolmistress (1972)
When Taekwondo Strikes (1976)
The Goddess of Mercy (1966)"

Seems Yongpal was wrong about "The Rescue" but correct with the others (listed above) he mentioned.

"Schoolmistress" must be a Korean-English title because I can't find any film at the HKMDB with that name.

"The Goddess of Mercy. This is a big budget film that was made by Shaw Brothers and Shin Sang-ok's leading production company Shin Films... Two versions of this film were made: the scenes with the lead actress were shot twice, once with Hong Kong actress Li Lihua and again with Korean actress Choi Eun-hee."

Ha-Ha. A reversal of the norm. This time they're pretending a Korean director is Chinese(!)

I think Korean actors were invited to Show Brothers like Kurata Yasuaki. So this is a pure Hong Kong movie... I think Jeong Chang Hwa invited a lot of Korean actors because he directed this. After this film had been completed, the Korean side was purchased.

Interesting stuff. I've finally realised what you're getting at. You think that the movies listed at the KOFA that don't credit the original director are the fakes, right? But that the ones that do mention the original director (like the Korean 'Countdown in Kung Fu' credits John Woo) are genuine. BTW, the director that the KOFA lists as co-director on 'Countdown' is listed as Assistant director on the Chinese print. I think, like you suggested, the co-directing credit for him is to make the movie even more Korean than it was.

I can't see this rare Korean version. Therefore I'd like to know details of this version.

I haven't seen it - but a clip of the alternate "happy" ending was posted on You Tube. Looked genuine to me, but if you haven't seen it you won't be able to offer an opinion. Maybe someone reading this knows where to find it?

No, "Hwaya" is one movie from the beginning. I have Korean original version. Casanova said this movie was a first work which he returned to Korea from Hong Kong.

Yes, that's right.

BTW, the director that the KOFA lists as co-director on 'Countdown' is listed as Assistant director on the Chinese print.

Yes, I think so too. I think that Korean side does Interpretation of Korea & Hong kong and they helped photography.

Where there ANY Chinese in the original 1983 movie "Hwaya"? Or did all of these people shoot new footage to splice in later?

Chinese is Chan Wai Man only. Original actors are Casanova, Chan Wai Man, Choi Eun Hee, Eagle Han, Park Dong Ryong, Hyeong Kil Su, Kim Wuk, Bae Su Chun etc...

Seems that the HKMDB may have made a mistake with regards to BIG BOSS. Yes - Li Tso-Nan is the director of SHANGHAI MASSACRE aka BIG BOSS BIG but according to the HKFA the directors of BIG BOSS are Richard Cheung Kuen (Hong Kong) and Chin Chang-Liang (Taiwanese). Neither of those names match the KOFA's director Kim Jong-Seong therefore this is probably a fake co-production purchased from HK/Taiwan.

EDIT: Hmm... the Taiwanese DB lists Li Tso-Nan as director after all. I give up. At any rate none fo them match what's on offer at the KOFA. lol

A Director of Hong Kong side (or Taiwan) is "Lee Ching" but His name isn't found HKMDB.

Yes, that's right. I saw this Korean version, but the running time (118min.) is short so I felt a quick tempo than an original HK or Chinese version. But it doesn't influence a story and the episode of 7 swordsmen are just cut a little.

Markgway
05-08-2009, 01:42 AM
Wow. That's 35 mins shorter than the HK theatrical cut (and reportedly Tsui Hark edited that down from 4 hrs). The HK version is overlong though. The UK version is 140m (somewhere between the two).

yongpal
05-08-2009, 03:05 AM
I saw the 153min version in Japan but it's very long for original 4 hours.

I heard that the appearance scene of Kim So-Yeon (She is only one Korean actress of this movie.) was added for the Korean version, so I expected Korean version as personal edit in Korea. But that didn't exist in the Korean version. Also I heard that a Korean voice artist will be dubbing in Korean for Donnie Yen but it was also different.

Yeah, I noticed that Kim was the only Korean and the movie wasn't even shot there. But Boram Ent. must've put in some cash as they get a prominant presenter's credit. Kim's performance was one of the film's best I thought and I was impressed with Donnie Yen performing in two secondary languages (Korean, Mandarin) throughout. The trouble with distributors editing films (in reference to the 140 and 118m versions) is that they often cut the wrong stuff. For instance the UK version removed the scene where Lu Yi leaves his horse in the desert which I actually found rather moving.

Yongpal - Do you have any info on Jackie Chan's DRAGON LORD (1982)?

Not been found at the KOFA, but I believe it was partly filmed in Korea. Possible co-production?

Hwang In-Sik and Kwon Yeong-Moon are the only faces I recognise.

A lot of Taiwanese actors/stuntmen, so much of it must've been filmed there too.

yongpal
05-13-2009, 04:32 AM
Good question!

Korean actors who appeared in "Dragon Lord" were only Hwang In-Sik and Kwon Yong-Mun but the film was expected to shoot in Korea on the first plan. So I thought "Dragon Lord" might be a collaboration movie with Korea too. But Louis Sit as producer is saying that 80% shot in Taiwan, and 20% shot in Hong Kong. (An interview from "Dragon Lord" FS version)
Also Louis was saying that Jackie Chan shot only one day in Korea but it wasn't used so I believe there was absolutely film in depot of GH.

Markgway
05-13-2009, 06:36 PM
Ah, so I guess they relocated the exteriors from Korea to Taiwan at the last minute. I thought that they had shot the pyramid scene in Korea but evidently not? Hwang and Kwon were already well-known in HK so it's not surprising they went along with the rest of the cast. The interiors were mostly likely shot at Golden Harvest studios. Thanks for the info.

"The Angry Guest" reached the standard of the co-production movie (it needed 1 Korean director, more than 3 Korean actors.), so this film was authorized as Korea and Hong Kong co-production movie.

I found the same note on the KOFA page for Valley of the Fangs.

Looks like that's another possible fake.

Although the Pusan Film Festival site lists the film as Korean...

Any idea what the Hong Kong/Korean titles are for this film: Schoolmistress starring LI Ching?

http://www.piff.org/eng/html/archive/arc_history09_02.asp

Also I found this note on the KOFA page for Kings of Blade and Sword:

"<용문의 여검>에 뒤이은 한중 합작의 획기적 대작" (한국일보, 19690513(4)광고)이라는 광고문안이 말해주듯이 <용문의 여검>의 성공을 반복하겠다는 기획의도로 만들어진 합작영화이다. 이 영화 또한 흥행에 성공을 거두었다. 동아극장은 <용문의 여검>의 성공 이후 합작에 의한 검술영화를 많이 상영했다.

Thanks!

Hi ThunderScore...I don't know the truth too.
Import of foreign films were restricted in Korean law at that time, so it may be one camouflaged as "domestic movie". I think many appearance scenes of Korean actors were inserted (and it was dubbed in Korean) and maybe camouflaged.

It's very difficult to look for this Korean version. I'm sorry....I have this version but I can't trade it.

Thanks

So far this is what I have...

Co-productions confirmed by either Pusan or the KOFA:

The Bamboo House of Dolls, The Black Hair, Countdown in Kung Fu, The Devil's Treasure, Duel to the Death, The Goddess of Mercy, Kings of Blade and Sword, The Last Woman of Shang, The Rescue, The Schoolmistress, When Taekwondo Strikes.

Confirmed as fake co-productions/pure HK movies:

The Association, King Boxer, The Skyhawk, Spiritual Kung Fu, Temptress of a Thousand Faces, Valley of the Fangs.

Not confirmed by the KOFA but definite genuine co-productions:

Assembly, A Battle of Wits.

This poster is "Sword of Dragon Gate". Ah, seems there's been a mix-up.

So 'Kings of Blade and Sword' = 'Yongmun-ui Yeogeom' (1969) then?

I had 'KOBAS' down as 'Magog-ui Gyeoltu' -- which must be another co-production with same director and similar cast.

I'll see what I can find out...

I came to that conclusion also... but have 'TC' down as 'Sindo'

Also found 'Six Assassins' at the KOFA, and another couple of Jeong Chang-Hwa films that I didn't even know were co-productions(!) 'Deep in My Heart' and 'Special Agent X-7'. These were easy because the HK titles are the same, which made me initially think they were just Korean imports.

Speaking of which... is 'Thousand Years Fox' a co-production? I thought Shaw Bros merely released it in HK, but I read an artcle which listed it as a co-production. The cast seems to be entirely Korean, making HK involvement unlikely. The KOFA doesn't confirm either.

Shin Sang-Ok didn't testify collaboration about this movie. Moreover I didn't come across Hong Kong staff and actors in this movie, so "Thousand Years Fox" is a pure Korean movie that was presented by Shin Film. If the Hong Kong side cooperated, I think that fighting scenes were sophisticated some more.

'Treasure Castle' appears to star Dok Go-Sung and Chiang Ming both of whom are credited on 'Yonggeompung' and 'Sindo'. Those are the only names the KOFA gives making identification tough. I haven't seen either film myself.

EDIT: I have a jpg of a poster for a film called 'Devil Spider' which I believe is an AKA for 'Treasure Castle'

The cast list in Chinese (only four names) is: Chiang Ming, Sun Chia-Lin, Tsui Hui-Hua, Tu Kao (Dok Go-Sung).

Doesn't help in regards to identifying what the Korean title is though...

Can't really say if it was filmed in Korea or not. The same goes for "The Association".
Why would they bring the whole cast and crew to Korea from Hong Kong only to film one fight? Especially if it's not really related in the story.

If the fight scene from "The Association" is only that scene, then I doubt it was filmed in Korea. However, if there are more scenes in the film then it could be filmed partially in Korea.

For the other clip "Bandits From Shantung" I don't know how you can tell this looks like Korea? It also look like any location near Beijing. Also you are right about the promo at the beginning, but it's not Taekwondo but Hapkido.

I only linked to one clip... but I'm sure other exterior scenes were also shot there. Yongpal has confirmed the location. Like I said I'm no expert but that Temple looked Korean to me. Result: genuine co-production. The KMDB have taken a comment Jeong Chang-Hwa made about 'fake' co-productions in a Pusan booklet and applied them to all his Hong Kong co-productions.

Damn, yeah, I knew it was Hapkido, but put Taekwondo. My bad. Grandmaster Ji Han-Jae was taking the class. He trained Sammo, Angela, Carter, etc., for their work on Korean co-production Hapkido. I can't be sure that those locations were Korean, but seeing as the film is a likely Korean co-production it makes sense. Perhaps Yongpal can shed some light.

I know most fans don't care... but I like the idea of giving recognition to Korean co-productions.
If we don't do it... who will?

Speaking of fakes...
I skimmed through 'The Angry Guest' again and couldn't find anything that suggested Korea.
In fact I'd forgotten just how much Japanese location footage was shot (the rest having been filmed at Shaw Studios in HK).
If this was a Japanese co-production (unlikely) I couldn't find any substantive evidence.
Let's chalk this one up to pure Hong Kong product.

Chang Cheh hands Kurata Yasuaki the message written in Japanese. But Japanese culture was being prohibited in Korea in 1970s, so the Japanese message was replaced with Korean. "The Angry Guest" was shown like a co-production of An-Yang Films and Shaw Brothers, but SB wasn't announcing it formally, so I'm convinced it's a fake co-production film. Also Kurata Yasuaki contracted with SB and he appeared on AG, but I'm convinced that isn't a co-production of Japan and Hong Kong.

Korean name is Wang Eun-Hee, I'm convinced that she is Korean.

Nice find. She only has two Hong Kong films listed (but I don't think either of those are co-productions).

Ah, a confirmed Korean. I remember mentioning him a good while back. You weren't sure at the time.

Good work. I actually had those three actors down from when I watched the film.

Yongpal, any idea about these actors/actresses?

崔金姬 (최금희)

金中一 (김중일)

Not 100% sure they're Korean but the names look right.

Also- my translations from Chinese may not be 100% correct.

Sorry Mark...
Those are sure Korean names and your translations are correct but I couldn't find those Korean actors/actresses.

Due to the nature of the film these Koreans may be adult video stars? Mostly they're just shagging...

COLD WAR (2000)

http://hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml?id=8897&display_set=eng

Possible (likely) HK-Korean co-production; though I can't find anything at the KOFA

Cast list:

Simon Yam
Christy Chung
Vincent Wan
李一才 (Lee Il-Jae) 이일재
楊安東 (Yang An-Dong) 양안동
金子 (Kim Ja) 김자

I can't find any exact matches at the KOFA for these actors.

Edit:

Korean title = 냉전 (Naengjeon)

This is Lee Il-Jae:

The HKMDB list him under his Korean name.

Edit:

http://www.kmdb.or.kr/actor/mm_basic.asp?person_id=00000008&keyword=lee il jae

Different Chinese name (characters) but it's the same guy.

Re. Yang An-Dong

"1951년 출생. 본명은 양안동(楊安東). 1969년 영화 행운초(幸運草)에 데뷔한 이래 7~80년대 중국 무협 영화에 단골 주연 배우 중 하나였다. 지금은 미용사업에 전념 중."

Seems to suggest that the actor/actress in question was in this 1969 Taiwanese swordplay CLOVER:
