I've seen a few of the man's films, and I was wondering what you all think of his movies. Cheap trash? Unintentionally or intentionally hilarious? Incredibly entertaining?
I just looked him up on IMDB, jesus the man's done a lot of movies! He seems to have gone through a lot of different phases like old skool Kung Fu, of course the Ninja series, gunplay etc. Here are the ones I've seen:
Magnificent Wonderman: Loved this movie, real trash but anything with Casanova unleashing some kicks has gotta be good. I thought the direction was quite accomplished in a old skool kinda way.
The Dragon, The Hero: One of my all time faves. Almost psychedelic, hilarious, brilliant dubbing, great Bolo cameo. The end fight is crazy! One of John Liu's best roles. And that castration scene!
Duel of the Tough: Absolutely terrible in every way. God, the fights are so bad. Only just worth it to see Han Ying in action.
Ninja Terminator: I think most of us love this one.
Incredible Shaolin Thunderkick: pretty damn bad. Really stupid this one. And crap fights.
Some I'd like to see, please give me your opinions:
Deadly China Dolls
Any of the other decent Ninja ones
Man Behind the Sun 2
Angel enforcers
Honour and Glory
Princess Madam
Enter the Invincible Hero
And what does everyone think of his film making philosophy? As in cutting between two completely different stroylines, cutting in stock footage etc.? I think sometimes as in Ninja Terminator it can be inspired.

hey,
truth be told, the Ho'ster did put his name on flicks acquired by IFD that were Korean ones originally. Complete films, done before the ninja craze where he basically could be said to have directed the ninja segments. But I do find that catalogue of films incredibly entertaining at times. Ninja Commandments and basically a lot of the "rival" Filmark stuff warms my heart the most.
As for Ho the actual filmmaker, Princess Madam wasn't too bad of a genre piece. Check out Angel Enforcers for some minor highlights too.

Champ Vs Champ is all of these things, plus you get weird clowns with special powers,a super powered steel replacement leg and a fire-breathing bad guy, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Ok, Silver Fox, I forgot about Champ vs Champ. I was putting off buying it cos i'm not a big fan of Dragon Lee. But based on that reccomendation I just ordered it. Cheers! Any other reccomendations?
when i'm coming home drunk at 2am on a saturday, a good ole Ho ninja cut-paste is a premier viewing choice.

I can't think of any of his other films that I'd actually want to recommend. The reason I suggested Champ Vs Champ is that I believe it is a 'complete' film and not a cut and paste job. It's fight scenes are not bad and as I mentioned the characters and production values are hilarious and entertaining.
Unlike some of his other efforts, there is actually some continuity from scene to scene and while not always coherent, seems to make a degree of sense. The film gets slightly confusing with a lengthy back story and it sometimes it's hard to tell if you're in the present or the back story but it's a pretty minor complaint really.
I think he directed a couple of films with Hwang Jang Lee but I can't think of their titles right now.

hey,
I was never under the impression that IFD or Filmark stole footage. They bought the rights to the films and THEN.... had their way with them. :)

I enjoyed Incredible Shaolin Thunderkick. Some of the fights are pretty high level. I don't think I've ever seen Eagle Han's hands move that fast. And Benny Tsui has some awesome kicks for a guy that looks that dorky. Plus you have the Santa villain. Can't beat that.

Godfrey Ho claims here (http://www.hkcinemagic.com/en/page.asp?aid=230&page=3) that the only aliases that were his own were: Godfrey Ho, Benny Ho , Godfrey Hall or Ho Chi Keung and that Joseph Lai changed his credited name to the others, except Alton Cheung.

There's another one... Ho Chi-Mau. He used that on 'Angel Enforcers'.
(One of his more tolerable movies).
I can't even sit thru the IFD stuff.

Speaking of IFd and Filmark, I just watched 10 Disciples of Shaolin. It is bloody amazing. Bit of a strange viewing experience as during the fights I was in viewing ectasy, in the dramatic portions I was reading a magazine it was so boring. According to good ol Toby Russell the choreographer was Han Ying.
I can tell you this movie has the best fights I have seen in an IFD or Filmark production. Can anyone reccomend some others the man Eagle Han has choreographed? They were so fast, high impact, and the end fight has some wicked kicking from Eagle Han.
Also, for those who have seen it, is Elton Chong the lead good guy? I thought he was great, can anyone reccomend other movies of his?

I liked The Dragon, the Hero with John Liu and Enter Three Dragons because there was plenty of fights that weren't bad.

Yes, 10 Shaolin Disciples aka Shaolin Incredible Ten is such an underrated film. The kicks done by the female cast are the best I've ever seen done by females in a martial arts film. They must have all had Korean taekwondo backgrounds. Another great part about the film is how the actors really beat the crap out of each other. There's one scene at the end where Mike Wong is fighting the lead female from his mechanical-chair thing, and Elton Chong comes out of nowhere, and flying roundhouse kicks Mike Wong and absolutely decimates him-- and I mean decimates him--sending him flying out of the chair. Of course the fight continues like nothing happened, just no longer on the chair.
Elton Chong was in fact the lead guy, and if you liked him here, then you have to check out Invincible Obsessed Fighter. Him and Mike Wong have another epic battle at the end of that one that's like straight out of a video game. In any normal martial arts film, both characters would have already been dead multiple times over from the damage they were inflicting upon each other. Sadly none of Elton's other films are as good as these two.

I've never seen 10 Disciples, but I'm gonna have to seek it out. Another one I rarely see talked about is Shaolin Blood Mission. That the best performance I've seen from Hwang jang Lee in a movie with Godfrey Ho's name attached to it.

Morgoth, yeah forgot about Blood Mission its pretty good I prefer Hwang's performance in Ninja Terminator though.
Yakuza, excellent info, I thought it was Eagle Han at the end of 10 Shaolin Disciples, you must be right though. Never heard of this guy Mike Wong, he looks a great screen fighter. I'll check out Invincible Obsessed fighter.

If I'm not mistaken, Eagle Han is in there too. He's the Qing official they ambush before the final fight.

Yeah Yakuza I think your right. i loved the movie also because it was featured on Alexei Sayle's comic skit on BBC2's Kung fu night in the late 90's. I remembered the two scenes featured on it so well. Especially when Mike Wong says 'and now it is your turn to die' in a ridiculously funny dubbed voice.
Yakuza, do you have a version on DVD? I've got the Vengeance release, as usual dubbed and full screen. I was wondering if there are any other versions out there. I really think this movie is an undiscovered gem!

I LOVE the Godfrey Ho films. Especially the Ninja titles. It is my personal NINJA mission to collect as many of these on DVD I can, and have done pretty good. I also love the Filmark Ninja titles. These films are "cheap", but they are masterpieces at extreme base entertainment. They are so fun to watch.

Well, you are right Ninja Terminator is a tough one to top. Have you seen ninja Holocaust aka City Ninja? Horrible movie, but lots of kicking from Cassanova, a few really good cheesy moments, and an awesome final fight between Cassanova and Chan Wai Man.

Sure, I like Godfrey Ho. You have to be picky about your trash though, not all of them are good. Some of his later era flicks he got way too lazy with the whole edit two or three movies together thing, to the point that they are more confusing and sh*tty than guilty pleasurable. But it is hard to deny the awful charms of a decent Godfrey Ho ninja flick.

Ninja Dragon is excellent. The Ulitmate Ninja is great... Ghost Ninja is very good. Ninja Squad, also good. So many.... The Tang Ninja films are great too, Rarescope has a 2 DVD, The Ninja Collection, which has 4 Filmark Ninja films, thats a good set.

Kungpowmaster, I searched for that rarescope collection and could not find it. Could you tell me where you got it?

I have Ninja Holocaust aka City Ninja in the 50 pack. Venom of the Ninja aka NInja Death also comes in the 50 pack. It is a 3 part series. Part 1 is insane. One of my favorite movies. Unfortunately parts 2 and 3 are crap. BTW, there are 2 different 50 packs and some of the titles are different. I don't know if City Ninja comes in both 50 packs, so just so you know I have the one with bruce Lee on the cover.

I have to admit, I have a lot of those Godfrey Ho Ninja flicks of the 80's...I know they are composites, but they are perfect for a night with the guys to drink some beer and watch something unbelievably funny at times :D You gotta love those cheesy IFD Ninja trailers too...

What makes City Ninja one of the campier ones is that even the credits are spliced from a different but similar movie.

You talking about the white guy in the opening credits? He looked pretty good. I was disappointed he wasn't in the movie. And then Wang Li takes on the ninjas in the opening scene. At least I think it is him. Weird to see him in a non Shaw movie.

I got it at CD Tradepost like 2 or 3 years ago. All the films are decent quality. Almost all are in full screen. I don't remember any being unwatchable. Chase Step By Step is probably the worst quality, but I still enjoyed the movie. There's a lot of duds, but also a few gems like Heroes of Shaolin and Shadow Ninja aka Killer in White. It also has one of my guiltiest pleasures, The Impossible Kid starring Weng Weng.

Deadly China Dolls - quality movie in a way with some very impressive John Woo style gunplay
Angel enforcers - pretty rubbish movie with little fighting. There is a good final fight scene between Sharon Yeung Pan Pan and Dick Wei though.
Princess Madam - this cut and paste job makes no sense to me but Moon Lee, Michiko Nishiwaki and Sharon Yeung Pan Pan are in this one so you can't go wrong. Several good fight scenes and an impressive gunplay scene in the finale!
