My Ultimate Shaw would be 36TH Chambers based on the training sequences, action direction, and acting. It's an ultimate kung fu film, because the viewer is training right along with San Te.

You need to pick three in order (#1 being favourite) for the idea to work.

Try again.

Heroes of the East
36th Chamber of Shaolin
Chinatown Kid(International version)
The Delinquent/Kid from Kwangtung(I know only 3 but couldn't leave these out!)

You have to leave two out. I'm not being an awkward dick. It's so the system works.

No way in hell I could nail that catalogue down to three. I tried, reshaped and deleted a few times... but it just ain't happening... I doubt I could narrow LKL's output down to top three must have's even... hghghgvbleefggf

Here's three for posterity's sake just because I feel they're must own, but probably won't get much rep here otherwise. Near the top of my list regardless.

1. What Price Honesty
2. Rendezvous With Death
3. Usurpers Of Emperor's Power

Replace Wang Yu with Fu Sheng in Rendezvous with Death and I would agree that its top 3.

peringaten
03-27-2009, 12:05 AM
You know I would have initially agreed with you about Fu Sheng, would have made it feel more unmistakably A-class for sure. But I think Wong Yue fits the role better in retrospect... carries the naiveness of the role better. Fu Sheng did cocky young swordsman (umbrellasman here perhaps) more bolshily than the leadable naivity that suits this character brought well into play by Wong Yue. Best role I've seen from/for him possibly.

Iron Boat
03-27-2009, 12:24 AM
I actually prefer Wong Yue more so in the Proud Youth, that was a pretty good serious role for him. Wong Yue defeating Chen Kuan Tai at the end of Rendezvous just didn't seem right...or possible, lol.

peringaten
03-27-2009, 12:33 AM
Well, he didn't actually take out CKT at the end of Rendezvous, he was playing it nervous in part. Wong Yue weren't the one who finished him. Proud Youth was alright, but I like cocky naive umbrella style more than toilet sword style somewhat.

Iron Boat
03-27-2009, 12:58 AM
I'd have to watch again, I actually can't remember how Rendezvous ended. But if he beat him with trickery that would make more sense, I do recall liking that end fight better than vs Ti lung in Opium.

I tried to mix a bit of variety in. If I had to choose only three, I would want them to be different types of films. I coulda easily just gone with 3 random Pop's flix (HOTE, 36 Chambers 1-3, COTWL, LWOC, MMKF, ect....)

Alright... I hard a really hard time since I'm not one to play favorite so here it goes...

8 Diagram pole fighter: That was the easiest choice, a no contest. Philip Ko Fei vs Gordon Liu: Best pole fight ever.

Crippled Avengers: The movie that made me discover the Venoms. Awesome acrobatic fights.

Shaolin Prince: I juggled a while for the third place... So much canditate. In the end, I decided to go with an underdog. I knew very little about it going in this movie and I was blown away. By far imo the most underrated Shaw out there. Tang Chia's best work.

Maybe add Disciples of Shaolin as well.Would not do injustice...But as "traditional" student trains in shao-lin I think CC`s Shaolin Temple overcomes 36 chambers.Boxer from shantung is awesome movie and maybe deserves place on top10.I really dig scene where CKT takes on boxer.Disciples is also great entertainment but movie lacks nice fights,fu sheng and chi kuan chun are too good...
8 diagram is so fine also..
there is just so many good shaw movies making top 10 is difficult-

I agree I love CC's Shaolin Temple I still prefer to call it Death Chambers as it was known when I was growing up. I still credit 5 Masters of Death and Death Chambers as the two films that introduced me and hooked me on Shaw films in general. You are right about Disciples, Fu Sheng and CKC are too good and pretty much walk through the competition, I guess it would be the emotion of the film that sticks out for me. Another film on your list I love is New One Armed Swordsman. I think the final duel between DC and Ku Feng is one of the most satisfying end fights ever.

See above responses.

This is impossible to justify but If Mark is referring to sheer entertainment value,as we all know that there is a lot more to Shaw movies than this, then I'll go for entertainment and historical value because I believe I can show these three movies to anyone regardless of scepticism and chances are they will suspend their disbelief and like them.

.......................................just one more thing; I know Mark said this is just for fun and I can see that 8 diagrams has 37 points Amazons 3 points. Well for a bit more fun it will be good to mention that these 2 movies compliment each other.Though they are technically differently made - Diagram - having the edge on choreography, 14 Amazons was a landmark movie that lingered for months just like today's The Matrix,Sin City and Avatar.
Also 8 Diagrams and Amazons are two sides of the same coin so which one owes it's success to the other?
Would Sifu Lau had made the impressive Diagrams as good as it is without reference to Amazons. That reference is very significant. If Amazons was poor would sifu Lau had made such an effort to give us this classic years later? Amazons was a big challenge to surpass hence we got the magnificent 8 Diagram Pole Fighters so for a little bit more fun Amazons deserves half a point for every one of Diagram's  because without Amazons we might not have got Diagrams and I say this because no one else tried this again because Sifu Lau sealed the deal.No one could beat these 2 landmark movies of the same subject matter.Think about it.

These are valid points. Alas, in terms of [at least] the home video age, 8DPF has been available for viewing for several years, compared to 14A, which has been available on DVD (by IVL and Funimation) a fraction of that time. Exposure easily tempers the voting toward 8DPF!... Further, 14A was adapted from an old Chinese writing (like The Water Margin was adapted from the Chinese novel Outlaws of the Marsh). Lau Kar Leung's script writer could easily have gone to that source material and concoct the story for 8DPF without giving a SECOND THOUGHT to 14A! The reality is 8DPF WAS made because of 14A having been released in the first place, even though it ran only once (prior to home entertainment) but still did great box office! Maybe if more people eventually buy 14A and REALLY like it, its ranking on here will improve to where it should be, from the perspective of artistic and fiancial sucess!

I used to be a big fan of 36th Chamber but overtime I dont rate it as high anymore as I once did..

Well here are the Ninjas top three Shaws in order..

1. Crippled Avengers - The only movie in history where once the movie finished I had to put it on again immediatley right back from the beginning and watch again!! Its that wicked!

2. Avenging Eagle - Watched it subbed originally and thought it was good. Then my bro Pete from FLK sent me the custom dubbed version and it blew me away and took it to a whole other level! The dubbed version is on a whole other level!!

3. It has to be a tie between Spearman of Death & The Deadly Secret (sorry Mark couldnt choose between the two).

I would've never guessed Deadly Secret would be such a hit. I checked it out a couple of weeks ago because I was curious to see a wuxia by the director of Men Behind the Sun. Well, ,it's a cool film , but it didn't blow me away. I wasn't super into the "special effects". I also have this feeling that Celestial tampered with the editing a little bit. I can't put my finger on it but the movie just doesn't feel like a production from 1980 to me! I'd give DS about a 6-7 /10.

There are so many Shaw films, most I have't seen.

But I did just see one that I thought was great!

Heroes of the East.

I also just ordered Challenge of the Masters, and haven't seen this before.

For a bit of fun I'm going to compile a list of the top ten Shaw Bros films you must own.

What I want you guys to do is pick your top three Shaw films and leave the rest to me.

Put them in order with your number one being your ultimate Shaw film

Once there's enough votes to make a list we can see what the official KFC top ten must own titles are.

The more votes each film gets the higher it places on the chart.

Get voting guys!

Updated with Pai Mei, Apanblod, and Jumungus' lists...

AND my own picks!! Finally!!

I went with

Eight-Diagram Pole Fighter
Killer Constable
The Secret of the Dirk.

Very difficult to choose form a shortlist of about six.

I went with 'Dirk' because it wasn't anywhere on the list and deserved a mention.

a film that I never even heard of before (in this case, Secret of the Dirk)

imo its quite decent, but nothing to go crazy about. i believe i liked hsu cheng hungs 12 deadly coins, swordsman at large and silver fox at least equally.
he was quite the dependable wuxia director back in the late 60s. im not so much appreciative of the shaw`s pre-1968 stuff; but his are some of the nicest in comparison.
many other shaws from SotD`s year of release (1970) on the other hand i think deserve more praise (ie iron buddha, 12 gold medallions, chinese boxer, lady of steel....).

Shouldn't this list be about the best of the best?

I couldn't decide on the third title so I picked the most unsung of the bunch. It's still a classic otherwise I wouldn't have even considered it. The choosing of titles isn't scientific - for anyone. On another day I might have went with The Magnificent Trio... or Temple of the Red Lotus...but I figured those two were slightly better known.

#1) Heroes of the East (1978) starring Gordon Liu and Mizuno Yuko:
ooothe best Shaw Brothers kung fu film, and a good one to show to
oooShaws neophytes of all stripes, and to girlfriends, and to family

#2) Love Without End (1961) starring Linda Lin Dai and Guan Shan:
ooodeservedly classic black & white tearjerker, which was
ooosuccessfully re-made with Jenny Hu and Ling Yun in 1970,
ooobut without the towering performance of Lin Dai

#3) The Mermaid (1965) starring Li Ching (in two roles) and Ivy Ling Po:
oooa Huangmei opera in which a carp spirit falls in love with a scholar,
ooobringing the wrath of storm gods and the mediation of the Goddess
oooof Mercy (Kuan Yin) -- from a script from none other than Chang Cheh.
oooGreat even if you don't ordinarily like Huangmei operas, and especially
oooif you don't like The Love Eterne. At the Internet Movie Database
ooo(imdb.com), The Mermaid (1965) is called The Beautiful Carp Spirit.

HOWEVER, i can see that i picked the exact same 3 movies both times, which i guess gives my answer some statistical significance... I'm not sure everyone would give the same answer 1½ year after they gave their first reply

Quite hard to narrate into 3 films you need to have....But I think 5 shaolin masters and avenging eagle are essentials, everyone should have those.

3rd would be golden swallow, sword of swords or return of onearmed swordsman. Jimmy wang yu is not for everyones taste...fights are not that good in his movies but,,,darn, his finest movies are amazing watching experience,,,,Venom movie should be here too, rules for top 3 is unfair:nerd:

-return of onearmed swordsman
